CHAPTER 9 — THE RETURN OF THE LOST HEIR

The first time I saw my brother, I didn't recognize him.

Not because he looked different.

Not because time had changed his face.

But because my mind refused to accept what my heart already knew.

For thirty years, I believed I was an only child.

For thirty years, I believed my family tree had one missing branch.

But the truth was standing in front of me.

A man who carried my blood.

My memories.

My grandfather's eyes.

Lucas Sterling.

The brother they stole from me.

The meeting took place in an abandoned coastal warehouse.

A place far away from the Sterling empire.

Far away from cameras.

Far away from people who could twist the truth.

Admiral Reed believed it was the safest location.

I believed nowhere was safe anymore.

Not after everything I discovered.

The warehouse door opened.

A man walked inside.

Dark jacket.

Calm expression.

Careful movements.

The movements of someone who had spent years watching his surroundings.

Survival changes people.

I knew that better than anyone.

He stopped when he saw me.

Neither of us spoke.

Because what do you say to someone you should have known your entire life?

Someone who should have been standing beside you in family photos?

Someone who should have been fighting with you as a child?

Finally, he spoke.

"Celeste."

Hearing my name from him felt strange.

Not because it was unfamiliar.

Because it felt familiar.

Like a voice I had been waiting for without knowing.

I nodded.

"Lucas."

His expression changed slightly.

Pain.

Anger.

Confusion.

Everything I felt too.

"You look like her."

I knew immediately who he meant.

"Mom?"

He nodded.

"And Grandpa."

A small smile appeared on his face.

"You got his stubbornness."

I almost laughed.

"Everyone says that."

"Because it's true."

For a moment, we were not soldiers.

Not investigators.

Not people fighting an empire.

We were just two siblings meeting for the first time.

Then reality returned.

The Sterling name.

The betrayal.

The secrets.

The reason we were there.

"I need to ask you something."

Lucas looked at me.

"What?"

"Do you hate me?"

The question surprised him.

"Why would I hate you?"

"Because you lost everything too."

His expression changed.

"You think I blame you?"

I looked away.

"I don't know what to think anymore."

Lucas walked closer.

"Celeste."

His voice was calm.

"You were a child."

A pause.

"So was I."

Those words hurt.

Because they were true.

Two children.

Both victims.

Both sacrificed.

Lucas sat across from me.

"I remember pieces."

"Of what?"

"Before they took me."

I listened carefully.

"My earliest memory is Grandpa holding me."

His voice softened.

"He told me I had a sister."

My heart tightened.

"He told me you were brave."

I looked down.

"Then what happened?"

Lucas's expression darkened.

"Father found out Grandpa was investigating Project Orion."

The same story.

Again.

"But why take you?"

"Because I was proof."

"Proof of what?"

Lucas looked at me.

"That Project Orion wasn't just about technology."

I froze.

"What do you mean?"

He pulled out an old file.

The paper looked damaged.

Like it had survived years hidden away.

"My medical records."

I opened it.

At first, I didn't understand.

Then I saw the name.

STERLING GENETIC RESEARCH PROGRAM

My stomach turned.

"This isn't possible."

Lucas nodded.

"It is."

I looked at him.

"What did they do?"

"They used children."

Silence.

The words felt impossible.

"Project Orion started as military research."

Lucas continued.

"But eventually, they wanted something else."

"What?"

"Human prediction."

I frowned.

"Prediction?"

"They wanted to understand genetics. Behavior. Intelligence. Emotional response."

He looked at me.

"They wanted to create people who could be controlled."

I stared at the file.

"No."

"Yes."

My hands tightened.

"You're saying we were part of this?"

Lucas looked away.

"Not by choice."

The room became silent.

Suddenly, every secret made sense.

Why my grandfather protected us.

Why my father feared us.

Why they erased our records.

We were not just witnesses.

We were evidence.

"Why didn't you come back?"

The question left my mouth before I could stop it.

Lucas looked at me.

"I tried."

"When?"

"Many times."

"Then why didn't I know?"

"Because every path led back to Sterling."

His voice became bitter.

"They controlled everything."

"Where were you?"

"Different places."

He smiled sadly.

"Every time I got close to finding the truth, someone moved me."

"Moved you?"

"Changed my identity. Destroyed records. Made sure I stayed invisible."

I thought about my own life.

My name removed.

My reputation destroyed.

My existence rewritten.

They had done the same thing to both of us.

Different methods.

Same goal.

Erase.

Admiral Reed interrupted.

"We need to focus."

Both of us looked at him.

"The Sterling family knows you're looking for each other."

Lucas's expression changed.

"They know?"

"Yes."

He looked at me.

"How?"

"Someone inside Sterling Industries is helping them."

Lucas became quiet.

Then he said something that shocked me.

"I know who."

I stared at him.

"Who?"

He looked at Admiral Reed.

Then back at me.

"Alexander."

My heart sank.

"I know."

"No."

Lucas shook his head.

"You don't understand."

"What?"

"Alexander isn't just involved."

A pause.

"He has been protecting someone."

"Who?"

Lucas reached into his jacket.

He removed a photograph.

A woman.

Older.

Professional.

Standing beside Arthur Sterling.

I recognized her.

"Who is she?"

Lucas answered quietly.

"Dr. Evelyn Hart."

The name meant nothing to me.

But Admiral Reed's expression changed immediately.

"You know her?"

He nodded slowly.

"She was one of the original scientists behind Project Orion."

The room went silent.

"She disappeared fifteen years ago."

Lucas looked at me.

"Because Father hid her."

I stared at the photograph.

Another secret.

Another connection.

Another piece of the puzzle.

That night, Lucas and I stood outside the warehouse overlooking the ocean.

The same ocean that almost killed me.

The same ocean that took years from both of us.

"I always wondered what my sister would be like."

I looked at him.

"And?"

He smiled slightly.

"You're exactly what Grandpa said."

"What did he say?"

Lucas looked toward the water.

"That you would survive anything."

For the first time in years…

I felt something I thought I lost forever.

Family.

Not the Sterling family.

Something real.

Something chosen.

"We're going to expose them."

Lucas looked at me.

"Yes."

"We're going to find every secret."

"Yes."

"And we're going to make them answer."

He nodded.

"Together."

But neither of us knew…

Someone had been listening.

Inside the dark car parked across the road, a phone screen illuminated.

A message was sent.

THE STERLING TWINS HAVE REUNITED.

A reply came seconds later.

THEN THE FINAL PHASE BEGINS.

The sender's name appeared.

ARTHUR STERLING.

The family thought separating us would keep their secrets buried.

They were wrong.

Because two forgotten children had finally found each other.

May you like

And together…

They were more dangerous than any enemy the Sterling empire had ever faced.
