CHAPTER 14 — THE NIGHT EDWARD STERLING DISAPPEARED

There are secrets that destroy families.
And then there are secrets that destroy entire empires.
For fifteen years, the world believed Edward Sterling vanished because he was old, sick, and defeated.
The newspapers called it a tragic disappearance.
The business world called it a mystery.
My father called it an unfortunate accident.
But they were all wrong.
My grandfather did not disappear because he lost.
He disappeared because he discovered something powerful enough to bring down everyone who stood against him.
And someone wanted that truth buried forever.
The underground archive beneath the abandoned Project Orion facility was colder than any place I had ever been.
Not because of the air.
Because of the memories.
Every file.
Every photograph.
Every recording.
They all belonged to the man who was the only person in my family who ever truly believed in me.
Edward Sterling.
My grandfather.
The man who saw a daughter.
Not an asset.
Not a tool.
Not a weapon.
A human being.
I turned toward Daniel Cross.
My grandfather’s former security chief.
The man who had been hiding for fifteen years.
"The night he disappeared."
My voice was steady.
But my hands were shaking.
"Tell me everything."
Daniel looked at the old photograph of my grandfather on the desk.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he whispered:
"Your grandfather knew they were coming."
Lucas stepped forward.
"Who?"
Daniel looked at him.
"The people behind Project Orion."
Admiral Reed's expression darkened.
"The organization we never found."
Daniel nodded.
"Because Edward made sure they couldn't find him."
I frowned.
"He planned his own disappearance?"
"Yes."
The answer shocked all of us.
"Why?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Because being alive in the shadows was the only way he could protect you."
Fifteen years earlier...
Edward Sterling had discovered the truth.
Project Orion was no longer a research program.
It had become something far more dangerous.
A machine designed to understand human behavior.
To predict decisions.
To identify weaknesses.
And eventually...
To control people.
My grandfather realized the truth too late.
The project he helped create had become the very thing he feared.
A weapon against freedom itself.
"He tried to shut it down."
Daniel continued.
"But Arthur stopped him."
My chest tightened.
My father.
Again.
Always my father.
"What did Arthur do?"
Daniel looked away.
"He chose the empire."
Those four words hurt more than anger.
Because they explained everything.
Daniel activated an old security terminal.
The screen flickered.
A video appeared.
The date was displayed:
October 14 — Fifteen Years Earlier
The day Edward Sterling disappeared.
The room became silent.
Then my grandfather appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But determined.
His voice filled the room.
"If you are watching this, then I failed."
I held my breath.
"Project Orion was supposed to protect humanity."
A pause.
"Instead, it became a way to control it."
Lucas stared at the screen.
"He knew everything."
The recording continued.
"Arthur believes he controls this project."
My grandfather looked directly into the camera.
"He doesn't understand that he is only another piece being moved."
My blood ran cold.
My father.
The man who believed he controlled the world.
Was being controlled himself.
The video changed.
A second recording.
My grandfather was standing inside the same facility.
But this time…
There was fear in his eyes.
"They discovered my investigation."
He looked exhausted.
"I cannot fight them publicly."
A pause.
"If I disappear, they will believe they won."
The camera moved closer.
"But I need Celeste and Lucas to know one thing."
My heart stopped.
His voice softened.
"They were never the experiment."
Tears formed in my eyes.
"They were the proof."
The screen showed our childhood files.
Mine.
Lucas's.
"Human beings cannot be controlled when they have something stronger than fear."
A pause.
"They have choice."
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because my grandfather's final message changed everything.
For years, I believed I had been abandoned.
I believed my family erased me because I wasn't enough.
But the truth was different.
I wasn't erased because I was weak.
I was erased because I was dangerous to them.
Because I could expose the truth.
Because I could choose.
Daniel finally broke the silence.
"There is something you need to know."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"The night Edward disappeared..."
He hesitated.
"He met your father."
Lucas's face hardened.
"What?"
Daniel nodded.
"Arthur came to the facility."
My heart sank.
"What happened between them?"
Daniel looked down.
"I don't know everything."
"Why not?"
"Because Edward ordered me to leave."
I froze.
"Leave?"
"He told me if I stayed, I would die with him."
The room became silent.
"And you listened?"
Daniel looked away.
"No."
A pause.
"I stayed."
My eyes widened.
"Then what happened?"
Daniel's voice became quiet.
"I saw Arthur leave."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Alone?"
Daniel nodded.
"Without Edward."
The air felt impossible to breathe.
My father had always claimed he lost his father.
That he suffered too.
That he was another victim.
But now…
Another possibility appeared.
"What happened to my grandfather?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He walked to the old desk.
Opened a hidden compartment.
Inside was a small recorder.
"Edward left this behind."
He pressed the button.
Static.
Then my grandfather's voice.
"Arthur..."
Everyone froze.
"I spent my entire life building this family."
A pause.
"But you destroyed the one thing money could never buy."
My grandfather sounded heartbroken.
"Trust."
The recording continued.
"If you choose Project Orion over your children, then one day they will return."
A pause.
"And when they do..."
The audio distorted.
Then:
"They will know everything."
The recorder stopped.
Lucas looked at me.
"Father knew."
I nodded.
For years, Arthur Sterling had hidden behind excuses.
But now the truth was becoming clear.
He didn't lose control of his empire.
He protected it.
At any cost.
Even if the cost was his own children.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at me.
I answered.
A man's voice came through.
Older.
Calm.
But familiar.
"Celeste Sterling."
My entire body froze.
"Who is this?"
A pause.
Then:
"Someone who knew your grandfather better than anyone."
I looked at Daniel.
His face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"Where is Edward Sterling?"
The man was silent.
Then he said:
"Your grandfather never disappeared."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
"He was taken."
Silence.
"By who?"
The man's voice became darker.
"By the same people who erased you."
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Because the impossible had just become possible.
My grandfather might still be alive.
Somewhere.
Waiting.
Watching.
And whoever had taken him...
Was still out there.
Daniel looked at me.
"Celeste."
I turned.
His voice was serious.
"If Edward is alive..."
A pause.
"Then the war has only just begun."
I looked at the files.
At my brother.
At Admiral Reed.
At everything my family tried to bury.
For years, they believed they had erased us.
But they made one mistake.
May you like
They left survivors.
And survivors remember.
