CHAPTER 17 — THE BROTHER WHO WAS PROJECT ORION’S FINAL EXPERIMENT

The screen stayed frozen.

One name.

One file.

One truth that made the entire room feel like it had stopped breathing.

PROJECT ORION — FINAL SUBJECT
SUBJECT: ALEXANDER STERLING

For years, I believed I understood my family’s betrayal.

I thought my father erased me because I was a threat.

I thought Lucas was abandoned because Arthur saw him as a failure.

I thought Alexander was the son who escaped the cruelty because he was the chosen heir.

But I was wrong.

Every child in the Sterling family had been touched by Project Orion.

Every child had been damaged.

And Alexander…

Alexander had been the experiment they never told us about.

My brother stood frozen in front of the screen.

The confidence he had built over years disappeared.

For the first time, I saw fear in Alexander’s eyes.

Not fear of Arthur.

Not fear of losing the company.

Fear of finally understanding himself.

"No."

His voice was barely a whisper.

"That isn't possible."

Arthur Sterling watched him from across the room.

And for the first time, my father looked like he had all the power.

"You always wondered why you were different."

Alexander turned toward him.

"What did you do to me?"

Arthur said nothing.

That silence was an answer.

Lucas stepped closer.

"What did you do to our brother?"

Arthur looked at him.

"I gave him an opportunity."

My hands tightened.

"An opportunity?"

Arthur looked at me.

"You still don't understand."

"No."

My voice was cold.

"I understand perfectly."

I pointed at the screen.

"You experimented on your own children."

Arthur's expression remained calm.

That was the most terrifying part.

A normal person would panic.

A normal person would deny everything.

But Arthur Sterling had spent decades convincing himself that everything he did was necessary.

"I protected this family."

Alexander laughed.

A broken laugh.

"Protected?"

He looked at the files.

"You turned us into research."

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"You were special."

The words made Alexander freeze.

"I was your son."

A pause.

"Not your project."

The truth began to unfold.

Admiral Reed accessed the hidden Project Orion database.

Thousands of files appeared.

Medical records.

Psychological evaluations.

Private reports.

And three names.

CELESTE STERLING — SUBJECT C-01
LUCAS STERLING — SUBJECT C-02
ALEXANDER STERLING — SUBJECT C-03

But Alexander's file was different.

Unlike ours…

His was marked:

SUCCESSFUL INTEGRATION.

I stared at the words.

"What does that mean?"

Marcus Vale's voice came through the communication line.

Everyone turned.

He had been monitoring everything remotely.

"It means Alexander was not studied for resistance."

A pause.

"He was studied for adaptation."

Lucas frowned.

"Explain."

Marcus answered:

"Celeste resisted control."

He looked at me through the screen.

"Lucas survived abandonment."

Then his expression became serious.

"But Alexander was raised inside the system."

The room went silent.

"He was the first attempt to create a person who could function perfectly inside Project Orion's design."

I looked at Alexander.

Suddenly, memories came back.

The perfect grades.

The perfect manners.

The perfect speeches.

The way he never showed anger.

Never showed fear.

Never questioned Father.

He wasn't just trained.

He was programmed.

"Alexander..."

He looked at me.

His eyes were filled with pain.

"I don't know what parts of me are real anymore."

That sentence broke something inside me.

Because for the first time, I didn't see Arthur's heir.

I saw my brother.

A child who had also been stolen.

Arthur stepped forward.

"You are all being dramatic."

Everyone looked at him.

He continued:

"Project Orion gave you advantages."

Lucas stared at him.

"You call this an advantage?"

Arthur ignored him.

"Celeste survived because of Orion."

He looked at me.

"Lucas became stronger because of Orion."

Then Alexander.

"And Alexander became exceptional because of Orion."

I felt anger rising.

"You don't hear yourself, do you?"

Arthur looked at me.

"You think suffering makes people weak."

I stepped closer.

"But you forgot something."

"What?"

"Suffering also teaches people the truth about themselves."

Alexander walked toward the screen.

"Tell me something, Father."

Arthur looked at him.

"Did you ever love me?"

The room became silent.

A question so simple.

But so painful.

Arthur hesitated.

Only for a second.

But everyone saw it.

And Alexander saw it too.

That hesitation was the answer.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Acceptance.

"You never saw me as your son."

Arthur remained silent.

"You saw me as your success."

Then something unexpected happened.

Alexander smiled.

A small, broken smile.

"Thank you."

Arthur frowned.

"For what?"

"For finally making me stop wondering."

He turned toward us.

"I spent my whole life trying to become someone worthy of this family."

A pause.

"Now I realize the family was never worthy of me."

Suddenly, the building shook.

An explosion echoed from below.

The screens went black.

Security alarms screamed.

Admiral Reed immediately reacted.

"We're compromised."

Marcus's voice returned.

"Someone is accessing the Orion servers."

Lucas looked at the monitors.

"Impossible."

"Why?"

"Because only Arthur had access."

Everyone turned.

Slowly.

Toward my father.

But Arthur wasn't looking at us.

He was looking at the screen.

And for the first time…

He looked genuinely afraid.

"No."

I noticed.

"What?"

Arthur didn't answer.

The alarm continued.

Then a new message appeared.

Not from Arthur.

Not from us.

From someone else.

PROJECT ORION REACTIVATION COMPLETE.

Below it:

PRIMARY CONTROLLER ONLINE.

My heart tightened.

"Who is the controller?"

Nobody answered.

Then a name appeared.

A name none of us expected.

DR. EVELYN HART

The room froze.

Evelyn.

The woman who claimed she wanted to destroy Orion.

The woman who gave us the database.

The woman who said she regretted everything.

She had lied.

Or maybe…

She had been playing a bigger game.

Arthur looked at the screen.

"This wasn't supposed to happen."

I turned toward him.

"You didn't know?"

For the first time, my father looked powerless.

"No."

A pause.

"She used me."

The irony almost felt impossible.

The man who controlled everyone…

Had finally been controlled.

A video appeared.

Evelyn Hart.

Older.

Calm.

Smiling.

"Hello, Celeste."

I stared at the screen.

"You."

She smiled.

"I knew you would find the truth eventually."

Lucas stepped forward.

"You betrayed us."

Evelyn shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"I revealed exactly what you needed to see."

My eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

Her smile disappeared.

"Project Orion was never about your family."

The screen changed.

A global map appeared.

Hundreds of locations.

Hundreds of files.

Hundreds of subjects.

My blood went cold.

"The Sterling family was only one test."

Evelyn looked directly at me.

"You are finally ready for the real project."

The screen went black.

One final message appeared:

ORION PHASE TWO: HUMANITY TESTING BEGINS.

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly the battle was no longer about revenge.

Not about my father.

Not about the Sterling empire.

Not even about our family.

We had spent our lives fighting a single monster.

But we had finally discovered the truth.

The monster was much bigger.

And now it was awake.

I looked at Lucas.

At Alexander.

At Admiral Reed.

The three children Project Orion tried to break were standing together.

But this time…

May you like

We weren't fighting to survive.

We were fighting to stop it.
