CHAPTER 15 — THE MAN WHO RETURNED FROM THE DEAD

Death is supposed to be the end.
A final page.
A closed chapter.
A person disappears, and the world learns to move on.
That was what the Sterling family wanted everyone to believe.
That Edward Sterling was gone.
That the man who built the empire was buried somewhere in the past.
That his secrets died with him.
But they made one mistake.
They underestimated the man who taught me never to surrender.
Because Edward Sterling was not dead.
He was waiting.
The call lasted only forty seconds.
Forty seconds that changed everything I believed.
A stranger's voice.
A hidden truth.
A sentence that shattered fifteen years of lies.
"Your grandfather never disappeared. He was taken."
Those words repeated in my mind.
Over and over.
As I sat inside the underground archive, surrounded by the evidence of a war my family had fought in silence.
Admiral Reed was the first to speak.
"We need to verify the source."
Lucas looked at him.
"Verify?"
His voice was filled with anger.
"We just learned our grandfather might be alive."
Reed remained calm.
"Exactly."
He looked at us.
"Which means someone wants us to believe that."
I understood what he meant.
In our world, information was a weapon.
And sometimes the most dangerous lies were built around pieces of truth.
But something inside me refused to believe it was false.
Because deep down…
I knew.
My grandfather was alive.
Daniel Cross stood silently near the old files.
He looked like a man who had just watched a ghost return.
"You recognized the voice."
I said it quietly.
Daniel didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
His expression told me everything.
"Who was he?"
Daniel finally spoke.
"Someone Edward trusted."
"That doesn't answer my question."
He looked at me.
"His name was Marcus Vale."
The room became still.
Admiral Reed immediately turned.
"Impossible."
Lucas looked between us.
"Who is Marcus Vale?"
Daniel's face became serious.
"The first director of Project Orion."
My stomach tightened.
"The man who created it?"
Daniel nodded.
"The man who helped your grandfather build it."
A pause.
"And the man everyone believed died twelve years ago."
Another dead man.
Another impossible return.
The Sterling family seemed to be surrounded by ghosts.
People who disappeared.
People who were erased.
People who carried secrets.
I looked at Daniel.
"You knew he was alive."
"I suspected."
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
Daniel's eyes darkened.
"Because the last person who searched for Marcus Vale disappeared."
"Who?"
He looked at me.
"Your grandfather."
The connection was immediate.
Edward wasn't just investigating Project Orion.
He was following Marcus Vale.
The man who knew the origin of everything.
"Find him."
Admiral Reed looked at me.
"Celeste—"
"No."
I stood.
"We spent years searching for answers."
I looked at Lucas.
"We finally have a path."
Lucas nodded.
"She's right."
Reed sighed.
"You both inherited your grandfather's stubbornness."
I almost smiled.
"Apparently."
But the truth was simple.
We were done running.
Three hours later, Admiral Reed located the signal.
Marcus Vale had not contacted us randomly.
He wanted us to find him.
The location:
A private research facility hidden in the mountains.
A place that officially didn't exist.
The same pattern.
The same game.
Someone hiding the truth in places nobody would look.
As we traveled there, Lucas sat beside me.
For the first time since meeting him…
He looked peaceful.
"What are you thinking?"
I asked.
He looked out the window.
"I spent my whole life wondering why they abandoned me."
A pause.
"Now I know."
I waited.
"They weren't trying to forget me."
He looked at me.
"They were trying to hide me."
I nodded.
"Because we were evidence."
Lucas smiled sadly.
"Funny."
"What?"
"Father spent years trying to erase us."
He looked at me.
"And now we're the only people who can erase him."
The mountain facility appeared at sunset.
Old.
Abandoned.
Silent.
Exactly the kind of place powerful people used when they wanted the world to forget.
Daniel entered the access code.
The door opened.
Inside was a fully operational laboratory.
Someone had been living there.
Working there.
Waiting there.
On the wall was a single message.
Written in black ink.
THE CHILDREN RETURNED.
Lucas stared at it.
"He knew."
I nodded.
"He expected us."
We followed the lights deeper into the facility.
At the end of the hallway was a small room.
Inside was a man sitting beside a desk.
Older.
Gray hair.
But alive.
Very alive.
He slowly turned.
And looked at me.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then he smiled.
"Celeste."
My heart stopped.
Because he knew my name.
Not from files.
Not from reports.
From memory.
"You knew my grandfather."
The man nodded.
"I knew him better than anyone."
"Who are you?"
The old man stood.
"My name is Marcus Vale."
Lucas stepped forward.
"The creator of Project Orion."
Marcus looked at him.
"No."
A pause.
"I was the man who helped create it."
He looked at me.
"Your grandfather was the man who tried to destroy it."
Anger rose inside me.
"You knew what they were doing."
Marcus lowered his head.
"Yes."
"You experimented on children."
His expression changed.
Regret.
"I did."
Lucas's fists tightened.
"Then why should we listen to you?"
Marcus looked at him.
"Because I am the reason your grandfather disappeared."
Silence.
Everyone froze.
I stepped closer.
"What did you do?"
Marcus looked at me.
"I helped Edward uncover the truth."
"Then why did he disappear?"
"Because he discovered someone inside Project Orion was planning to use you."
My blood went cold.
"Me?"
Marcus nodded.
"And Lucas."
"What do you mean?"
He walked toward an old computer.
Opened a file.
Two names appeared.
SUBJECT C-01 — CELESTE STERLING
SUBJECT C-02 — LUCAS STERLING
But below them was another line.
A line I had never seen before.
FINAL OBJECTIVE: SUCCESSOR PROGRAM
I stared.
"What is that?"
Marcus looked at me.
"The plan to replace Project Orion."
"Replace?"
"Yes."
He turned.
"The original project wanted to predict human behavior."
A pause.
"The successor program wanted to create people who could control it."
My blood ran cold.
"Who created it?"
Marcus looked directly at me.
"Your father."
The room went silent.
No.
Not again.
Every path led back to Arthur Sterling.
But this time it was different.
This wasn't about money.
This wasn't about an empire.
This was about something much darker.
Marcus continued.
"Arthur believed your abilities could be replicated."
"My abilities?"
"Your ability to survive pressure."
"Your ability to make decisions under impossible conditions."
Lucas looked at me.
"The scars."
I nodded.
The ship.
The fire.
The sacrifice.
Everything.
Marcus looked at me.
"Your father wasn't ashamed of your scars."
My heart tightened.
"He was afraid of them."
Before anyone could respond, every screen in the facility turned on.
A face appeared.
Arthur Sterling.
My father.
Live.
Watching us.
His voice filled the room.
"Congratulations, Celeste."
Everyone froze.
"You finally found the truth."
My fists tightened.
"Father."
He smiled.
"But you still don't understand."
The screen changed.
A satellite image appeared.
A location.
A facility.
Then another image.
A person inside.
My mother.
My breath stopped.
"What did you do?"
Arthur smiled.
"I gave you a choice."
The screen went dark.
A final message appeared:
COME ALONE, CELESTE.
OR YOUR MOTHER DISAPPEARS FOREVER.
The room exploded into chaos.
Admiral Reed immediately moved.
"This is a trap."
"I know."
Lucas looked at me.
"You're not going alone."
I looked at the message.
My father had spent my entire life trying to control my choices.
But he didn't understand something.
He never owned me.
Not then.
Not now.
I looked at my brother.
At Admiral Reed.
At the people who had finally become my family.
Then I said:
"We end this."
Because Arthur Sterling had made his final mistake.
He threatened the one person I would never abandon.
My mother.
May you like
And now…
The daughter he erased was coming for him.
