Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE

Forgery changed everything.
Daniel canceled the remainder of Vivian's meetings.
Mara contacted outside litigation counsel.
A handwriting expert was retained before lunch.
By 3:00 p.m., Sterling Trust had notified Caldwell Global that any transfer of ArcLine would be treated as a potential covenant breach.
At 3:17 p.m., Adrian called Vivian.
She let it ring.
At 3:19, he called again.
At 3:22, a message appeared.
YOU ARE MAKING A VERY SERIOUS MISTAKE.
Vivian read it twice.
Then replied.
WHICH ONE?
He did not answer.
At 4:05 p.m., Caldwell Global issued an internal memorandum.
The memo described rumors regarding financing as inaccurate and destructive.
It stated that the company remained financially strong.
It said management had complete confidence in its strategic direction.
Then came the sentence Vivian knew Adrian had personally written.
Certain parties with personal conflicts may be attempting to interfere with the company's lawful operations.
Certain parties.
His wife.
Twenty minutes later, a financial reporter called Sterling Trust.
Someone had leaked a story.
The headline appeared online at 4:41 p.m.
CALDWELL GLOBAL CEO FACES PRESSURE FROM WIFE AMID MARITAL DISPUTE.
Vivian stared at the article.
The story described the Bellamy dinner.
It mentioned the slap.
But only one of them.
Vivian's.
According to the anonymous sources, Vivian Caldwell had attacked a company employee after becoming jealous during a private dinner.
Sienna's first slap disappeared entirely.
So did the refinancing issue.
So did the shell company.
So did the $2.8 million.
Adrian had turned a financial investigation into a jealous-wife story in less than twenty-four hours.
Mara entered Vivian's office carrying a tablet.
"There's more."
Vivian looked at her.
"Of course there is."
A second article had already appeared.
This one claimed Sterling Trust's investment committee faced governance concerns because its chair was married to the CEO of a major borrower.
That criticism was not entirely wrong.
Vivian had always disclosed the relationship.
She had recused herself from specific negotiations.
But perception mattered.
Adrian understood that.
He was weaponizing the same marriage that had benefited him.
Daniel entered behind Mara.
"The committee has called an emergency session."
"When?"
"Six."
Vivian nodded.
"Good."
Daniel did not move.
"What?"
"They're discussing temporary recusal."
Vivian looked at him.
"Mine?"
"Yes."
She understood the logic.
She hated it anyway.
"Who requested it?"
Daniel paused.
"Julian."
Vivian laughed once.
Quietly.
Her cousin had taken money from Adrian's network.
Now he was trying to remove her from the committee investigating Adrian.
"Does the committee know about Northway?"
"Not yet."
"Why not?"
"Because our investigation isn't complete."
"Then complete it faster."
Daniel held her gaze.
"Vivian."
She stood.
"Don't tell me to calm down."
"I wasn't going to."
"Good."
"I was going to tell you Adrian wants you angry."
That stopped her.
Daniel continued.
"He has spent ten years telling people you're emotional."
Vivian looked toward the windows.
"Yes."
"So every time he provokes you now, he is reinforcing the story he already built."
Her jaw tightened.
Daniel was right.
That was the worst part.
At six o'clock, twelve investment committee members gathered.
Some appeared in person.
Others joined by encrypted video.
Vivian sat at the head of the table.
Julian sat halfway down.
Nobody mentioned family.
Nobody mentioned Bellamy.
Committee member Harold Bennett spoke first.
"Given the public allegations and the potential marital conflict, I move that Vivian Caldwell temporarily step aside from all Caldwell Global matters pending an independent review."
Vivian looked at him.
Harold had identified her at Bellamy as committee chair.
Now he would vote on whether she remained one.
She did not blame him.
Good governance could not exist only when convenient.
"Second?"
A woman on the video screen raised her hand.
"Second."
Discussion began.
Julian stayed quiet.
Vivian watched him.
He avoided her eyes.
Twenty minutes later, the vote happened.
Seven in favor.
Four against.
Vivian abstained.
She was temporarily removed from all Caldwell Global decisions.
Harold took over.
The meeting ended.
Vivian collected her papers.
Julian approached.
"This doesn't have to become ugly."
She looked at him.
"You took money."
"I made a mistake."
"You tried to remove me before that mistake became public."
"I'm protecting the trust."
"No."
Vivian stepped closer.
"You're protecting yourself."
Julian's mouth tightened.
"You always thought you were better than the rest of us."
Vivian shook her head.
"I thought we were family."
"Family doesn't investigate family."
"Then Adrian should be safe."
Julian's face changed.
Vivian continued.
"Because you've been treating him like a brother."
She left.
Outside the conference room, her phone displayed twelve missed calls.
One was from Sienna.
Vivian stopped.
She returned it.
Sienna answered immediately.
"Vivian."
No arrogance now.
No pretty laugh.
"What do you want?"
"We need to talk."
"About the consulting payments?"
"Not on the phone."
"About Meridian?"
Silence.
Vivian leaned against the wall.
"Where are you?"
Sienna's breathing sounded unsteady.
"I made a mistake."
"You made several."
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
"I can't."
"Why?"
Sienna whispered the answer.
"Because Adrian knows I'm talking to you."
A noise sounded on Sienna's end.
A door.
Then a man's voice in the distance.
Sienna gasped.
The call ended.
Vivian stared at the screen.
She dialed back.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a text arrived.
Not from Sienna.
May you like
From Adrian.
STAY AWAY FROM HER.
