Chapter 15 - THE LOWEST POINT

The safe was empty.

Adrian had cleared it.

When Vivian returned to the townhouse with attorneys and a court-authorized preservation order, the compartment contained only old insurance documents.

No ledger.

No drives.

No backup key.

Nothing.

Adrian stood in the doorway.

"You really brought lawyers into our bedroom."

Vivian ignored him.

Daniel documented the safe.

Adrian smiled.

"Find what you wanted?"

Vivian looked at him.

"Where is it?"

"Where is what?"

"The ledger."

For the first time, she saw genuine amusement.

"Sienna has an active imagination."

"Julian confirmed it."

"Julian is a fugitive."

"He hasn't been charged."

"Yet."

Adrian walked toward the window.

"You've surrounded yourself with liars, thieves, and mistresses."

Vivian stared at him.

"Interesting team."

"You selected most of them."

His smile vanished.

That evening, things got worse.

Much worse.

Blackthorne released evidence suggesting North Harbor had coordinated debt purchases with Sterling insiders.

The allegation was misleading.

But not entirely false.

Vivian had spoken with Daniel while considering the purchases.

A regulator opened an inquiry.

Harold suspended Vivian from the Sterling committee entirely.

Not just Caldwell matters.

All matters.

Until governance questions were resolved.

For the first time since she was thirty-four, Vivian no longer chaired the investment committee.

The next morning, North Harbor's largest outside partner requested redemption discussions.

By afternoon, headlines described Vivian as a wealthy spouse using interconnected family vehicles to attack her husband's company.

Then Martin's bail was denied.

Then Sienna's testimony was challenged after old messages surfaced showing she had demanded more Meridian equity.

Then Samuel Reeves's IP claim suffered a major blow when Caldwell produced a signed settlement agreement.

Samuel had apparently transferred all claims to Adrian fifteen years earlier for $250,000.

Sienna stared at the signature.

"That's my father's."

The forensic expert agreed.

Likely genuine.

Vivian felt the case collapsing.

At six, the court allowed Blackthorne's restructuring process to advance, subject to final review.

At seven, Caldwell Global's board reaffirmed Adrian as CEO.

At eight, Adrian appeared on television.

He looked tired.

Measured.

Victimized.

"I love my wife."

Vivian turned off the sound.

Adrian continued beneath the silent captions.

This has been incredibly painful.

Our private marriage should never have become a weapon against employees.

He promised stability.

Jobs.

Integrity.

The market loved him.

By midnight, Blackthorne debt traded higher.

Vivian sat alone in the Sterling conference room.

No title.

No committee authority.

No immediate legal victory.

Daniel entered.

"You should go home."

"Which one?"

He sat across from her.

"Any one where Adrian isn't."

Vivian smiled faintly.

"Mother's?"

"Probably."

She looked at the dark windows.

"Did I become what he said I was?"

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"Vindictive."

"No."

"You don't have to answer quickly."

"I didn't."

"Maybe I stopped thinking about the company."

"You've thought about nothing else."

"Exactly."

Daniel watched her.

Vivian continued.

"I wanted to beat him."

"Understandable."

"That's not the same as protecting the trust."

"No."

"Or employees."

"No."

She leaned back.

"He made everything personal."

"Yes."

"And I let him."

Daniel shook his head.

"Don't give him too much credit."

Vivian smiled sadly.

"You're a terrible therapist."

"I'm a lawyer."

"Same hourly rate."

Daniel laughed.

For the first time in days, Vivian did too.

Then her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Again.

She opened the message.

One photograph.

The cuff links.

Her anniversary gift to Adrian.

They rested on a white surface beside a handwritten note.

YOU'VE BEEN LOOKING AT THE WRONG THING.

Vivian stared.

Daniel leaned closer.

Another message appeared.

HE DIDN'T TAKE THE KEY.

HE TOOK THE CUFF LINKS BECAUSE THEY WERE NEVER CUFF LINKS.

Vivian's breathing slowed.

Memory returned.

Her fifth anniversary.

The gift.

Custom-made in Geneva.

Sterling family jeweler.

Her grandfather had recommended the maker.

Vivian called Eleanor.

"Mother."

"It's midnight."

"The cuff links I gave Adrian."

"What about them?"

"Who ordered them?"

A pause.

"Your grandfather."

Vivian sat up.

"What?"

"He suggested them before he died."

"Why?"

"He said Adrian needed something elegant enough that he'd never leave it behind."

Vivian's skin prickled.

"Mother."

"Yes?"

"What did he mean?"

Eleanor was silent for several seconds.

Then:

"Oh."

Vivian stood.

"What?"

"I completely forgot."

"Forgot what?"

"Your grandfather had a security habit."

"What habit?"

"He embedded storage devices in personal objects."

Vivian stared at Daniel.

"The cuff links."

Eleanor continued.

"He gave them to certain executives."

"Why?"

"Emergency encrypted backups."

Vivian's pulse accelerated.

"Backups of what?"

"I don't know."

Another message arrived.

LOOK AT THE ORIGINAL ANNIVERSARY RECEIPT.

Daniel was already moving.

Twenty minutes later, they found a digital copy in Vivian's personal records.

Item description:

Custom platinum cuff links.

Two-piece secure storage architecture.

Primary and mirrored encrypted memory.

Vivian looked at Daniel.

"Two."

He understood.

"Adrian removed both?"

Vivian replayed the night of Bellamy.

He had been wearing them at dinner.

He arrived home without them.

But what if he had not removed both in the same place?

She opened the Bellamy security footage.

Adrian entered the dining room.

Vivian zoomed.

Left cuff.

Silver.

Right cuff.

Silver.

After dinner chaos, Adrian rushed toward Sienna.

Vivian froze the frame.

Left cuff.

Empty.

Right cuff.

Still there.

She jumped to the hallway footage.

Later, Adrian exited.

Right cuff.

Gone.

Two cuff links.

Removed at different times.

Maybe intentionally.

Maybe one was lost.

May you like

Vivian looked at Daniel.

"Search Bellamy."
