Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY BETRAYAL

Julian had lied about everything.

Not just the consulting payments.

Not just Meridian.

Not just the smear strategy.

He had been negotiating his own future.

Daniel's investigators found the agreement forty-eight hours later.

It was hidden inside Northway Strategy Partners' cloud archive.

A draft incentive arrangement.

If Sterling sold its Caldwell debt or lost control in restructuring, Julian Sterling would receive an equity interest in Meridian worth up to forty million dollars.

Vivian read the document without speaking.

Her cousin had not betrayed her for six hundred forty thousand dollars.

That had merely been the advance.

The real payment was a future fortune.

Eleanor sat across from Vivian.

"He was always jealous of you."

Vivian looked up.

"That's not an excuse."

"No."

"I never wanted grandfather's chair."

"I know."

"Julian did."

"I know."

Vivian laughed bitterly.

"Then why did everyone pretend this was about governance?"

"Because families prefer procedure when the truth is embarrassing."

Vivian stared at the window.

"What did Grandfather promise Adrian?"

Eleanor's expression changed.

"Nothing."

"Julian said—"

"Julian lied."

"Are you sure?"

"No."

Vivian looked at her.

Eleanor sighed.

"Your grandfather met Adrian twice."

"When?"

"After your wedding."

"Why?"

"He wanted to understand him."

"Did he invest?"

"Eventually."

"What did he say?"

"About Adrian?"

"Yes."

Eleanor remembered.

"He said Adrian was one of the most impressive young men he'd ever met."

Vivian waited.

"And?"

"He said he would never trust him with an unlocked door."

Despite everything, Vivian laughed.

That sounded exactly like her grandfather.

Eleanor continued.

"But your grandfather believed talent mattered."

"So he financed him."

"With protections."

The covenants.

The secured debt.

The restrictions Adrian hated.

Vivian suddenly understood.

Grandfather had never trusted Adrian.

The financing structure itself proved it.

Sterling did not give Adrian freedom.

It gave him money inside a cage.

Adrian had spent years trying to escape that cage.

Daniel entered.

"Julian is gone."

Vivian stood.

"What does that mean?"

"He missed his attorney meeting."

"Phone?"

"Off."

"Passport?"

"Used."

"Where?"

"Canada."

Vivian stared at him.

"He ran?"

"Looks like it."

Her phone vibrated.

A video message.

Julian.

He appeared inside what looked like an airport lounge.

"Viv."

He looked exhausted.

"If you're watching this, I left."

Vivian's jaw tightened.

Julian continued.

"I know what you think of me."

"You should."

"But Adrian lied."

Vivian almost threw the phone.

"He said Meridian would protect Sterling."

"He said Blackthorne would refinance everything."

"He said your recusal was temporary."

"He said once the company was independent, the trust would be repaid and nobody would lose."

Vivian whispered.

"Idiot."

Julian continued.

"I believed him because I wanted to."

That, at least, was honest.

"I wanted one thing that didn't come through you."

Vivian's anger stopped.

There it was.

Not money.

Not entirely.

Resentment.

"I spent my whole life being the other Sterling."

Julian looked directly into the camera.

"Your grandfather trusted you."

"Your mother trusted you."

"The committees listened to you."

"And I was the one who got invited after decisions were made."

Vivian felt sadness she did not want.

Julian had turned humiliation into treachery.

But the humiliation had been real to him.

Then his expression changed.

"There's something you need."

Vivian leaned closer.

"Adrian keeps a private ledger."

"Not accounting."

"Leverage."

Her pulse quickened.

"He records everything people owe him."

"Favors."

"Payments."

"Affairs."

"Mistakes."

"Everything."

"Where?"

Julian looked away.

"I don't know."

Vivian cursed.

"But Sienna does."

Sienna, sitting nearby, froze.

Julian continued.

"She saw it once."

The video ended.

Vivian turned toward Sienna.

Sienna's face had gone pale.

"You know about the ledger."

Sienna said nothing.

Vivian stood.

"After everything, you're still hiding something?"

"It's not that simple."

"It is exactly that simple."

Sienna looked at Daniel.

Then Vivian.

"If I tell you where it is, people will be destroyed."

"Adrian?"

"No."

"Who?"

"Everyone."

Vivian waited.

Sienna whispered.

"Board members."

"Politicians."

"Bankers."

"Employees."

"Families."

She looked sick.

"Adrian kept secrets people would do anything to keep buried."

Vivian understood.

This was bigger than Meridian.

Bigger than the marriage.

Adrian had built influence not just through money.

Through leverage.

"Where is it?"

Sienna closed her eyes.

"Inside the townhouse."

Vivian stared at her.

"My house?"

Sienna nodded.

"In the safe."

The changed code.

The metal dust.

The missing cuff links.

Vivian felt the pieces connect.

"What did he remove the night of Bellamy?"

May you like

Sienna looked at her.

"The backup key."
