Chapter 16 - THE FIRST LIE

Rebecca authenticated the tape.

No edits.

No splices.

Original magnetic recording.

Damian's legal team called it teenage bravado.

Then we found the second clue.

The birthday footage showed Damian wearing a distinctive silver school ring.

That same ring appeared in an old traffic-camera photograph taken near my mother's crash site.

Twenty minutes before the accident.

A teenager stood beside Malcolm's car.

Damian.

He had been there.

He had always claimed he was at boarding school.

He lied.

Rebecca reopened the crash investigation.

At the same time, Mara discovered something hidden in the original mansion security system.

Old biometric logs.

Fourteen years earlier, on the night after Mom's crash, someone had used Evelyn's access code to enter the house.

Not Evelyn.

The camera image had been deleted.

But the access credential remained.

Mom stared at the timestamp.

"11:43 p.m."

She looked at Dad.

"That was during my funeral arrangements."

Who had her code?

Only three people.

Mom.

Dad.

And Nathan Price.

Nathan.

Again.

But the next line changed everything.

At 11:44 p.m., Rose Hale's code was used.

Grandmother entered one minute later.

At 12:08, Nathan left.

At 12:10, Rose left.

Something happened in that house after Mom's supposed death.

Something both had hidden.

We found Nathan before Damian did.

He was sitting in a church in Brooklyn.

No disguise.

No guards.

Just an exhausted old man.

I sat beside him.

"You stole the files."

"Yes."

"You sold us out."

"No."

"Then explain."

Nathan stared at the altar.

"Damian believed I stole them for him."

"Did you?"

"I burned them."

My anger exploded.

"You burned fourteen years of evidence?"

"Copies."

He looked at me.

"The originals are with federal investigators."

I froze.

"You staged the theft."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"To make Damian trust Celeste."

I stared.

"Celeste isn't working for him?"

"She is."

"That makes no sense."

"It will."

Nathan handed me a phone.

Live audio played.

Damian and Celeste.

They were arguing.

Celeste:

"You said Lydia would be protected."

Damian:

"Mother made her choices."

Celeste:

"And Claire?"

Damian laughed.

"Claire was a signature with a heartbeat."

My hands trembled.

Nathan whispered, "Keep listening."

Damian continued.

"Once the trust clears, I sell the infrastructure assets, move the capital offshore, and let Hale Holdings collapse under Victor's indictment."

Celeste:

"Thousands of people lose their pensions."

Damian:

"Not my problem."

There it was.

Fraud.

Conspiracy.

Intent.

Nathan stopped the recording.

"Celeste agreed to wear the wire."

I stared.

"Why?"

"Because Damian threatened Lydia."

"So Celeste came back to us?"

Nathan shook his head.

"No."

"Then what?"

"She's trying to save herself too."

Of course.

Nobody became pure overnight.

But imperfect witnesses could still tell the truth.

Nathan leaned closer.

"Damian is moving the money tonight."

"Where?"

"Cross Atlantic's original clearing account."

"Can we stop it?"

"No."

My stomach dropped.

Nathan smiled faintly.

"But you can make him finish it."

I understood.

The transfer itself would become evidence.

Damian thought he was cashing out.

May you like

In reality...

he was about to document the entire conspiracy with his own hands.
