Chapter 15 - NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE

The merger passed.
At 9:17 the next morning, Damian Cross became controlling chairman of Hale-Cross Infrastructure.
My shares remained disputed.
My father remained under indictment.
My mother's files were gone.
Nathan had disappeared.
Celeste stopped answering.
Lydia denied everything she'd told me.
And financial news channels described Damian as the man who had stabilized a family empire during a scandal.
He smiled beside the company logo.
Perfect.
Calm.
Victorious.
I sat alone in my mother's hidden cellar.
For the first time, I considered walking away.
Not strategically.
Completely.
Sell whatever remained.
Leave New York.
Change my name.
Let the Hale and Cross families destroy each other.
Mom found me there.
"You can."
I looked up.
"Can what?"
"Leave."
"You'd hate me."
"No."
She sat beside me.
"I stayed away for fourteen years because I convinced myself sacrifice was love."
Her voice broke.
"I will never ask you to sacrifice your life for this family."
I looked at her.
"Did you ever stop wanting to come home?"
"Every day."
"Then why didn't you?"
"Because eventually fear becomes a habit."
That sentence stayed with me.
Fear becomes a habit.
So did obedience.
So did silence.
So did explaining bruises.
Maybe courage could become one too.
Mara entered.
She carried a cardboard box.
"There's something you should see."
Inside were old birthday decorations.
Mine.
From fourteen years ago.
Mom smiled sadly.
"I bought those."
Mara lifted a small camcorder.
"Mrs. Hale gave this to me the day before her accident."
Mom frowned.
"I don't remember that."
"You asked me to record Claire's party."
I took the camera.
Old tape inside.
Battery dead.
We found an adapter.
The video played.
Sixteen-year-old me laughing.
Mom decorating.
Dad carrying balloons.
Grandmother Rose correcting everyone.
Then Malcolm Cross entered.
My heart stopped.
The camera had been left running on a bookshelf.
Adults spoke in the background.
At first, nothing mattered.
Then Mom left the room.
Malcolm followed.
Rose remained.
Nathan Price entered.
They spoke quietly.
Mara increased the volume.
Rose said,
"Malcolm has lost control."
Nathan answered,
"Then Evelyn is in danger."
Rose:
"Get her out."
I stared.
Mom whispered, "She tried to save me."
The recording continued.
Nathan:
"What about Claire?"
Rose:
"Never involve the girl."
Then another voice spoke.
A boy's voice.
Young.
But unmistakable.
"If Claire inherits, everything changes."
The camera angle shifted as someone bumped the table.
A seventeen-year-old Damian Cross appeared.
He had been there.
Fourteen years ago.
Listening.
He knew about my inheritance.
He knew about the trust.
He knew my mother was in danger.
He knew before we ever met.
Then teenage Damian said:
"If Evelyn disappears, Claire becomes easier to control."
Mom covered her mouth.
My entire marriage collapsed in one sentence recorded fourteen years earlier.
May you like
And suddenly we had something Damian couldn't explain away.
His own voice.
