Chapter 11 - THE GUARDIANSHIP HEARING

Damian wore navy blue to court.
He always wore navy when he wanted to look trustworthy.
I knew because I had once helped him choose the suit.
He sat beside Lydia.
Neither looked at me.
Their attorney described me as traumatized.
Volatile.
Manipulated.
Emotionally unstable.
Then he showed the judge photographs of the birthday party.
Me with bruises.
Me shouting.
Me crying in my mother's arms.
They turned every wound into evidence against me.
Damian testified.
"I love my wife."
I almost laughed.
"Claire has struggled since childhood with grief surrounding her mother's death."
He looked toward me with practiced sadness.
"Seeing a stranger appear and claim to be Evelyn triggered something."
My attorney stood.
"Mr. Cross, did you cause the bruises visible in those photographs?"
His expression remained calm.
"No."
"Did you grab your wife's wrist?"
"I restrained her from striking me."
My mouth opened.
Rebecca touched my shoulder.
Wait.
My attorney produced security footage.
Not from the ballroom.
From our bedroom hallway.
Damian grabbing me.
Me pulling away.
No striking.
No attack.
Just me trying to leave.
His face changed.
"Where did you get that?"
My attorney smiled.
"The Hale residence security archive."
Mara.
The quiet housekeeper everyone ignored had saved six months of footage.
Damian's attorney tried to object.
The judge watched it anyway.
Then came another clip.
Lydia cornering me after a charity dinner.
"You will sign whatever Damian puts in front of you."
Another.
Damian blocking a doorway.
Another.
His voice.
"You own nothing without me."
Another.
My voice.
"Move."
Then Damian punching the wall beside my head.
The courtroom changed.
His guardianship petition died in twelve minutes.
The judge denied it.
Then she did something Damian hadn't expected.
She referred the evidence to prosecutors.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded us.
For the first time, Damian didn't control the story.
Mom squeezed my hand.
"You did it."
"No."
I looked at Mara.
"She did."
Mara smiled faintly.
Then Rebecca's phone rang.
Her face changed.
"What happened?"
She listened.
Then looked at Dad.
"Victor Hale has been indicted."
My father stared.
"For what?"
"Obstruction."
The fourteen-year-old payment.
The delayed disclosure.
The hidden accounts.
Damian had released everything.
Dad looked at me.
"I knew this might happen."
Police approached.
Mom moved toward him.
Dad stopped her.
"No."
He kissed her forehead.
"For once, let the truth happen."
They handcuffed him.
I watched my father walk toward the waiting vehicle.
The reporters shouted.
Mom cried silently.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Damian.
YOU WANTED EVERYTHING RELEASED.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
I stared at the words.
Then typed back.
THANK YOU.
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
I smiled.
Because Damian had misunderstood.
My father being charged was terrible.
But the blackmail was gone.
May you like
There was nothing left to threaten us with.
And that meant Damian had just destroyed his most valuable weapon.
