Chapter 14 - THE LAST LIE

Nobody moved.

Not even Beatrice.

Mara stared at Celia.

“Why?”

Celia's voice trembled.

“Because Conrad asked me to.”

Mara frowned.

“What?”

“He was dying.”

“His death certificate said heart attack.”

“He had pancreatic cancer.”

Beatrice turned sharply.

“You never told me that.”

Celia laughed bitterly.

“He didn't want you to know.”

Conrad had months.

Maybe weeks.

He feared the Circle would discover his illness and seize control before Phoenix was finished.

When the pain became unbearable, Celia gave him medication.

Enough to end his life.

“At his request,” Celia whispered.

“Then why hide it?”

“Because assisted death would've triggered an investigation.”

“And exposed Phoenix.”

“Yes.”

Daniel had suspected murder because the medical records were falsified.

But the truth was more complicated.

Conrad was dying anyway.

Celia helped him choose the moment.

Beatrice hadn't killed him.

At least not directly.

“Why did Daniel ask me to investigate Conrad's death?”

“Because he discovered the falsification.”

“He didn't know the reason.”

“No.”

One mystery closed.

Another remained.

Beatrice had still terrorized everyone around her.

Manipulated Julian.

Blackmailed Celia.

Protected the Circle.

Tried to incapacitate Mara.

She had simply not committed one particular murder.

Mara looked at David.

“And Daniel?”

His death wasn't complicated.

It was still a crime.

David lowered his weapon slightly.

That was all Elias needed.

The hidden door behind the bookcase opened.

Elias emerged.

David turned.

Theo crashed through the side entrance at the same instant.

Chaos.

No gunfire.

Mara had insisted if possible.

Theo tackled his brother.

Elias disarmed one guard.

Celia pushed Beatrice away from the desk.

Mara ducked as another man rushed her.

Julian appeared through the doorway.

He had disobeyed Mara's order to stay outside.

Of course.

The guard swung toward her.

Julian intercepted him.

They crashed into the wall.

Mara grabbed the fallen weapon and kicked it away.

Police sirens approached.

Not ordinary local police.

Federal teams Evelyn had contacted simultaneously after verifying the archive.

Beatrice heard them.

Her face changed.

For the first time, genuine panic.

“What did you do?”

Mara stood.

“Released evidence.”

“You stupid woman.”

“No.”

“You have no idea what you just destabilized.”

“I didn't release everything.”

Beatrice stopped.

Mara continued.

“Only verified criminal evidence.”

Beatrice stared.

“No affairs.”

“No private medical information.”

“No political embarrassment unless connected to crimes.”

“No personal blackmail.”

Graham's archive had been a weapon.

Mara had transformed it into evidence.

That distinction destroyed the Circle's greatest defense.

They could no longer claim Mara was recklessly releasing secrets.

She was submitting documented crimes through legal channels.

“You can't do this,” Beatrice said.

“Already did.”

“You'll destroy Julian.”

Mara looked toward him.

Julian stood bleeding near the bookcase.

He met her gaze.

“I know.”

Mara turned back.

“Accountability doesn't disappear because I once loved the defendant.”

Julian flinched.

But nodded.

Beatrice tried one final weapon.

“Then you'll destroy yourself.”

“Maybe.”

“The transactions carry your signatures.”

“I know.”

“You could be charged.”

“Yes.”

“You'll lose companies.”

“Maybe.”

“You'll lose everything.”

Mara shook her head.

“That's the difference between us.”

Beatrice frowned.

“You kept thinking I was protecting what I owned.”

Mara stepped closer.

“I was protecting the right thing to do.”

Federal agents entered.

David Carrow was arrested.

Beatrice was restrained.

Her expression remained proud until she saw Celia step toward investigators.

“I'll testify,” Celia said.

Beatrice finally cracked.

“You ungrateful coward.”

Celia looked at the woman who had controlled nearly her entire life.

“No.”

Her voice became stronger.

“I'm simply finished being afraid of you.”

Samuel entered behind investigators.

Celia saw him.

Mother and son stared at each other.

Forty-five stolen years between them.

Samuel walked forward.

Celia started crying.

He embraced her.

Beatrice looked away.

Mara's phone rang.

Hospital.

Robert was awake.

She answered.

“Mara.”

“It's over.”

“No.”

Her father's voice was weak.

“Phoenix hasn't transferred.”

She checked the time.

Eight minutes remained.

“What happens when it does?”

“That depends on whether Conrad's amendment survives challenge.”

“We have the original.”

“You don't.”

Mara looked toward the folder on Beatrice's desk.

“What?”

“The document you found is a copy.”

Her stomach dropped.

“Where's the original?”

Robert coughed.

“Daniel had it.”

“The compass?”

“No.”

“Then where?”

Robert whispered:

“With the person he trusted most.”

Mara looked at Julian.

Julian went still.

Mara lowered the phone.

“Daniel gave you something.”

Julian said nothing.

“Eleven years ago.”

His eyes closed.

“Mara…”

“What did he give you?”

Julian reached inside his jacket.

Removed his wallet.

Behind an old photograph was a folded piece of yellowed paper.

Mara stared in disbelief.

“You carried it all this time?”

“I didn't know what it was.”

“You never opened it?”

“It was sealed and Daniel told me to give it to you when I stopped being afraid of my mother.”

Mara almost laughed.

“That took you eleven years?”

Julian looked toward Beatrice being led away.

“Twelve.”

He handed Mara the envelope.

She opened it.

Original amendment.

Conrad Vale's signature.

Thomas Ellison's signature.

Witness stamp.

Everything Phoenix needed.

Her phone beeped.

Transfer pending.

Mara signed.

The screen changed.

PHOENIX EMERGENCY TRUST ACTIVATED.

PRIMARY INDEPENDENT TRUSTEE:

MARA ELLISON.

Beatrice stopped in the doorway.

She had seen the message.

For the first time in Mara's memory, Beatrice had no words.

Mara looked at her.

The woman who had treated her like prey.

The woman who had designed the gala humiliation.

The woman who had expected Mara to break.

Mara said only:

“Phase two is finished.”

Beatrice was taken away.

Julian looked at Mara.

“And now?”

Mara looked at the enormous responsibility suddenly resting in her hands.

Hospitals.

Banks.

Companies.

Thousands of employees.

A structure designed to prevent another Circle.

“Now,” she said, “I make sure there can never be a phase four.”
