Chapter 11 - THE MAN BESIDE HER

The coordinates led north.
An abandoned observatory overlooking the Hudson.
Robert had chosen it because there was one road in.
One road out.
Visible approaches.
Limited surveillance.
Or so he thought.
By dawn, rain had begun.
Mara drove alone.
At least that was what Robert would see.
Theo tracked her five miles behind.
Elias approached through woodland.
Samuel stayed with the archive.
Julian insisted on coming.
Mara refused.
“You are part of this whether I like it or not,” he said.
“That doesn't mean you're part of my team.”
The words hurt him.
Good.
Some wounds needed to hurt before they healed.
If they ever healed.
Julian remained behind.
Mara reached the observatory at 5:41 a.m.
Robert stood beneath the broken dome.
He looked older than when she had buried him.
Thinner.
A scar crossed his forehead.
But he was alive.
Mara stopped twenty feet away.
Neither moved.
“You look like your mother,” Robert said.
“Don't.”
He nodded.
Fair.
“Recorder.”
“First tell me who killed Daniel.”
Robert smiled sadly.
“You were always impatient.”
“You murdered my brother. You've exhausted my patience.”
Robert looked past her.
“Are you alone?”
“You'll know if I'm not.”
He almost smiled.
“That sounds like Daniel.”
“Stop saying his name like you earned the right.”
Robert's expression hardened.
“I loved my son.”
“You had him killed.”
“Both can be true.”
“That may be the ugliest thing you've ever said.”
Robert accepted that.
Then he pointed toward the recorder.
“He wasn't supposed to die.”
Mara froze.
“You just said you gave the order.”
“To stop him.”
“With a truck?”
“To frighten him.”
Mara laughed in disbelief.
“Do you hear yourself?”
“The driver was supposed to force Daniel off the road onto the emergency shoulder.”
“Instead he went over the mountain.”
“Yes.”
“Who drove?”
Robert studied her.
“You already know him.”
Mara thought of everyone beside her.
Theo.
Elias.
Samuel.
Julian.
Graham.
Her father reached into his coat.
Mara tensed.
He removed a photograph.
Placed it on the table.
Daniel beside a much younger Theo.
Mara's stomach tightened.
“Theo.”
“No.”
Robert tapped the photograph.
“Theo was Daniel's protection.”
“Then who?”
A second man appeared in the background.
Young.
Dark hair.
Barely visible.
Mara stared.
Julian.
“He was there.”
“I know.”
“He told me that.”
“The driver was Julian.”
Mara stopped breathing.
No.
Julian said he'd followed Daniel.
Said a truck struck him.
“He wasn't driving a truck.”
“He was.”
“No.”
“Ask him.”
“Why would he rescue Daniel after hitting him?”
Robert smiled without warmth.
“Guilt.”
Mara heard movement through her hidden earpiece.
Theo.
Don't react.
She forced herself to stay still.
Robert continued.
“Beatrice told Julian Daniel was blackmailing the family.”
“Julian knew Daniel.”
“Not well.”
“He knew Daniel was my brother.”
“Yes.”
Mara's stomach twisted.
“He tried to scare him.”
“Yes.”
“And killed him.”
“Accidentally.”
No.
Something didn't fit.
Julian had admitted moving money.
Admitted concealing evidence.
Why hide this?
Because it was worse.
Or because Robert was lying.
Mara looked at the photograph.
“Where did you get this?”
“Daniel's file.”
“No.”
“What?”
“This wasn't taken the night he died.”
Robert's expression flickered.
Mara pointed at Daniel's coat.
“My brother died in June.”
“So?”
“He's wearing the coat I gave him for Christmas.”
“People wear coats.”
“It was destroyed in a kitchen fire three months before he died.”
Robert said nothing.
Mara's pulse steadied.
A planted photograph.
Her father was lying.
“Who drove the truck?”
Robert stepped backward.
“Mara.”
“Who?”
“You need to give me the recorder.”
“You're afraid of it.”
“Of what exposure will do.”
“No.”
Mara held it up.
“You're afraid of Daniel's voice.”
Robert lunged.
Mara stepped aside.
He grabbed her wrist.
For an elderly man, he was strong.
But Mara had spent months preparing for Julian.
And years learning that strength wasn't only size.
She turned her wrist.
Shifted her weight.
Robert lost balance.
She moved away.
Then a gunshot cracked.
Mara dropped.
Robert staggered.
Blood appeared on his shoulder.
Theo emerged from the trees.
“DOWN!”
Another shot.
Glass shattered.
Elias fired toward the ridge.
A sniper.
Robert collapsed behind concrete.
Mara crawled toward him.
“Who?”
Robert gasped.
“They found me.”
“Who?”
“The Circle.”
“You are the Circle.”
“No.”
Robert gripped her sleeve.
“I took Phoenix to destroy them.”
Mara stared.
“What?”
“I ordered Daniel stopped because he was going to release everything.”
“You said you wanted the same thing.”
“I wanted to dismantle it without collapsing the institutions.”
Another shot struck concrete.
Robert coughed.
“Daniel wouldn't wait.”
“So you killed him.”
“I failed him.”
“Who drove the truck?”
Robert's face twisted.
“Carrow.”
Mara knew the name.
Carrow Security.
One of the founding Circle companies.
“Which Carrow?”
“David.”
Theo heard.
His face changed.
Mara looked at him.
“You know him?”
Theo's jaw tightened.
“He's my brother.”
There it was.
The man beside her.
Not Theo himself.
His brother.
Robert began losing consciousness.
Mara pressed her hands against his shoulder wound.
“Stay awake.”
His eyes met hers.
“Daniel recorded everything.”
“What?”
“Not on that.”
He looked at the fake recorder.
“He knew I'd come for it.”
“Where is the real recording?”
Robert smiled faintly.
“You've had it for eleven years.”
“What?”
His eyes drifted toward her neck.
Mara touched the pendant she always wore.
Daniel's final gift.
A small silver compass.
Her hands froze.
Inside the observatory, footsteps approached.
Theo raised his weapon.
Elias shouted through comms.
“Multiple hostiles!”
Robert grabbed Mara's hand.
“One more thing.”
“What?”
“Julian…”
Mara leaned closer.
May you like
Robert whispered:
“He knew what was inside the compass.”
