Chapter 10 - PHASE THREE

Mara couldn't speak.

Her father continued.

“I assume Conrad's vault is open.”

“You're alive.”

“That was the idea.”

“You let me bury you.”

“I spared you.”

“Don't use that word.”

Robert went silent.

Mara walked away from the others.

“You watched me grieve you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because there are things worse than grief.”

“You all keep deciding that for me.”

A pause.

Then Robert said:

“Daniel said something similar.”

Mara's eyes closed.

“You saw him before he died.”

“Yes.”

“You knew what he was investigating.”

“Yes.”

“Did you help him?”

“At first.”

“At first?”

“He became reckless.”

“He became dead.”

“I know.”

“Who killed him?”

Robert didn't answer.

Mara's anger sharpened.

“Eleven years.”

“Mara—”

“WHO KILLED DANIEL?”

Robert finally spoke.

“I gave the order.”

The bank disappeared around her.

No sound.

No air.

Nothing.

Her father.

Not Beatrice.

Not Graham.

Not Julian.

Robert Ellison.

Mara leaned against the wall.

“Why?”

“He had the archive coordinates.”

“So?”

“He intended to expose everything.”

“Good.”

“No.”

Robert's voice hardened.

“You don't understand what everything means.”

“Then explain it.”

“The Circle wasn't merely criminals protecting criminals.”

“That's exactly what it sounds like.”

“It became that.”

“Convenient distinction.”

“It started after a financial crisis. Seven business leaders coordinating privately because governments couldn't move quickly enough.”

“And then?”

“Power became habit.”

“And murder became policy?”

Robert breathed heavily.

“Daniel discovered names that could trigger wars.”

Mara laughed in disbelief.

“So you murdered your son to protect stability?”

“I stopped one man from detonating something he didn't understand.”

“One man?”

“Your brother.”

“Your son.”

Robert's voice broke slightly.

“I know.”

That tiny crack made Mara hate him more.

Because somewhere inside this monster was a father who understood exactly what he had done.

“Did you drive the truck?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“I won't tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because he's standing beside you.”

Mara turned.

Theo.

Elias.

Samuel.

Julian.

Graham.

Which one?

Robert continued.

“That's why I called.”

“Which one?”

“I can get you out.”

“WHICH ONE?”

The line went dead.

Mara stared at the men around her.

One of them had been involved in Daniel's death.

Her father wanted suspicion to poison the room.

Maybe that was the intention.

Theo watched her.

“What did he say?”

Mara chose not to tell them.

Not yet.

“My father ordered Daniel's death.”

Julian closed his eyes.

Beatrice looked genuinely surprised.

Graham whispered, “Robert.”

“You didn't know?”

Mara asked.

“No.”

“Do I believe you?”

“Probably not.”

“No.”

Samuel stopped copying.

“He's moving money?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Evelyn's voice returned through the communications link.

“Mara, I traced it.”

“Tell me.”

“The frozen transfers were decoys.”

Mara had suspected that.

“Robert is liquidating something else.”

“What?”

“Voting shares.”

Julian stepped forward.

“In Vale?”

“No.”

Evelyn sounded stunned.

“In everything.”

Files appeared across the monitor.

Companies connected to the Circle were changing ownership simultaneously.

Vale Industries.

Morrow Private Bank.

Mercer Health.

Carrow Security.

News companies.

Infrastructure funds.

Energy holdings.

Someone was consolidating them.

Under one entity.

Mara read the purchaser.

PHOENIX CONSOLIDATED.

“Who owns Phoenix?”

“We're tracing.”

Samuel suddenly stopped.

He knew.

Mara saw it.

“Tell me.”

Samuel shook his head.

“Samuel.”

“Phoenix was Conrad's contingency company.”

Graham turned sharply.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Conrad dissolved Phoenix.”

“He tried.”

“Who controls it?”

Samuel looked at Mara.

“Apparently Robert.”

Mara finally understood.

Her father had never been hiding from the Circle.

He had been taking it.

All of it.

Daniel wasn't killed because he threatened the Circle.

He was killed because he threatened Robert's takeover.

Mara looked at the vast archive.

“Phase two was never enough.”

Elias smiled grimly.

“What are you thinking?”

“Julian expected me to defend myself.”

“Correct.”

“Beatrice expected me to bargain.”

“Yes.”

“Samuel expected me to open the vault.”

“Yes.”

“My father expects me to choose between exposing everything and destroying innocent people.”

Evelyn asked, “And?”

Mara picked up Daniel's recorder.

“I don't choose either.”

“What do you choose?”

Mara looked around the chamber.

“Phase three.”

Elias blinked.

“We don't have a phase three.”

“We do now.”

Mara began issuing instructions.

“No mass dump.”

Graham relaxed slightly.

“Don't look relieved.”

She pointed toward the evidence.

“We verify every file.”

“To do what?”

“Separate crimes from secrets.”

Political embarrassment wasn't necessarily criminal.

Affairs weren't relevant.

Personal vulnerabilities weren't leverage Mara intended to use.

Murder.

Fraud.

Bribery.

Extortion.

Those were different.

“We release evidence only where there is documented criminal conduct.”

Evelyn understood first.

“Controlled disclosure.”

“To multiple jurisdictions simultaneously.”

“So no single institution can bury it.”

“Exactly.”

Theo nodded.

“And Robert?”

Mara's eyes hardened.

“We let him believe he's winning.”

She called her father back.

He answered.

“Mara.”

“You were right.”

Silence.

“I shouldn't have opened the vault.”

Robert sounded cautious.

“What are you saying?”

“I want out.”

“You can't leave now.”

“You said you could get me out.”

“I can.”

“Then do it.”

A pause.

“You'll have to bring me something.”

“Of course.”

“Daniel's recorder.”

Mara looked at the device.

There it was.

The thing Robert feared.

“Where?”

“I'll send coordinates.”

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“You said someone beside me killed Daniel.”

Robert paused.

“I did.”

“Who?”

“I'll tell you when you arrive.”

The line ended.

Elias looked at Mara.

“You're not actually giving him that recorder.”

“Yes.”

Everyone stared.

Mara smiled coldly.

“He wants Daniel's recorder.”

She removed the old device from the box.

May you like

Then held up an identical one Elias had used during surveillance operations.

“So let's give him Daniel's recorder.”
