CHAPTER 4:The Night Chicago Chose Its King

Explosions rocked the estate.
Dozens of armed men stormed the front gates.
Victor's soldiers answered immediately.
Bullets tore through marble pillars.
Glass rained from the ceiling.
Emily hid inside the panic room.
Victor handed her a pistol.
She shook her head.
"I've never fired one."
"I hope you never have to."
Marcus broadcast through the security speakers.
"Give me Emily."
"I'll let everyone else live."
Victor smiled bitterly.
"So that's what this was really about."
Marcus didn't fear Victor.
He feared the witness.
Victor walked outside alone.
Rain soaked his black coat.
Marcus aimed his rifle.
"You've changed."
Victor nodded.
"She reminded me who I used to be."
Marcus laughed.
"You think one maid changes a lifetime of blood?"
"No."
Victor answered.
"But one honest person can."
Gunfire erupted.
Marcus fired first.
Emily burst from the panic room despite Dominic screaming after her.
She saw Marcus aiming again.
Without thinking...
She shoved Victor aside.
The bullet struck her shoulder.
Victor caught her before she hit the ground.
Everything inside him shattered.
For years people believed Victor Callaway feared nothing.
They were wrong.
He feared losing the only person who had ever protected him without asking for anything in return.
Victor's men overwhelmed Marcus's remaining soldiers.
Marcus was captured alive.
Before sunrise...
Every corrupt executive financing the assassination had been arrested.
The empire survived.

It could never remain the same.
