CHAPTER 3 — Duke's Last Gift

Months passed.

The letters were carefully restored and donated to the local historical museum.

Daniel became part of Mark and Emily's family.

Every Sunday, they shared dinner together in the house where the mystery had begun.

One evening, Daniel quietly asked to see the old living room wall.

The damaged plaster had been repaired.

He rested one hand against it and smiled.

"My mother hid her pain here."

"But somehow..."

"She also left behind hope."

Outside, Duke lay peacefully on the front porch.

Older now.

His muzzle had turned almost completely gray.

Not long afterward, the faithful dog passed away in his sleep.

They buried him beneath the oak tree in the backyard.

A simple stone marked the place.

DUKE

"He never spoke a word... but he helped a family hear the truth."

Years later, visitors often asked how the remarkable story had begun.

Mark always smiled before giving the same answer.

"It wasn't luck."

"It wasn't fate."

"It started with one loyal dog who refused to stop barking."

Some mysteries are solved by detectives.

Others...

By the unwavering heart of a faithful friend.
