CHAPTER 1 — The Box Behind the Wall
The rusted box was heavier than it looked.
Mark carried it to the kitchen table while his wife, Emily, brushed decades of dust from the lid.
Their German Shepherd, Duke, sat beside them.
For the first time in weeks...
He was completely silent.
Almost as if his job was finished.
Mark carefully pried the corroded lock loose.
The lid creaked open.
Inside lay dozens of yellowed letters tied together with faded blue ribbon.
A leather-bound journal.
Several black-and-white photographs.
And a tiny silver key.
The oldest letter was dated 1964.
Every envelope was addressed to the same woman.
Margaret Ellis.
Emily frowned.
"That was the original owner of this house."
Mark nodded.
"I thought she never had children."
He unfolded the first letter.
Within minutes, the room fell silent.
The letters were written by a young man named Thomas.
He and Margaret had been deeply in love.
They had planned to marry.
But Thomas disappeared before the wedding.
Everyone believed he had abandoned her.
The journal told a different story.
Margaret had discovered she was pregnant.
Before she could tell Thomas...
He vanished without explanation.
Heartbroken, she hid every letter inside the wall.
She never spoke about him again.
The final journal entry ended with one heartbreaking sentence.
"If anyone ever finds these letters... please tell my son that his father never stopped loving us."
Emily slowly closed the journal.
"But... who was her son?"
