CHAPTER 2 — The Son Who Never Knew

The next morning, Mark began searching through old property records.

After several days, he uncovered a surprising truth.

Margaret had given birth to a baby boy.

His name had been changed after adoption.

No one in the neighborhood had ever known.

With the help of a local historian, they traced the adoption records to a retired schoolteacher living nearly two hundred miles away.

His name was Daniel Carter.

Seventy-one years old.

When Mark called him, Daniel almost hung up.

"I think you've got the wrong person."

"I never knew my biological parents."

Mark hesitated.

"I think... I have something that belongs to you."

Three days later, Daniel arrived carrying nothing but a small overnight bag.

His hands trembled as he opened the letters.

For hours, he read every page in complete silence.

Sometimes smiling.

Sometimes crying.

He finally looked up.

"My whole life..."

"I believed I was abandoned."

He held the last letter tightly against his chest.

"But they were looking for each other all along."

Thomas had died in a mining accident before learning Margaret was expecting a child.

Margaret had spent the rest of her life believing Thomas had simply walked away.

One misunderstanding...

Had separated an entire family forever.

Daniel wiped away tears.

"At least now..."

"I know the truth."
