Chapter Seven – The Woman Who Returned
Nearly two years after the gala...
Evelyn Ashcroft appeared once more at the Grand Meridian.
This time she came alone.
She requested no reservation.
No special treatment.
She simply asked if she could volunteer at the children's center.
The staff hesitated.
Emily agreed.
Not because Evelyn deserved another chance.
Because children deserved to see that people could change.
Week after week, Evelyn read books to children.
She served meals.
She cleaned classrooms.
She never mentioned who she had once been.
One afternoon, a frightened little boy refused to speak.
Everyone else gave up.
Evelyn sat beside him for nearly an hour.
She said nothing.
She simply stayed.
Eventually he reached for her hand.
Emily watched quietly from the doorway.
Jonathan stepped beside her.
"Do you think she's changed?"
Emily answered after a long pause.
"I think she's finally learning what power is."
Not controlling people.
Serving them.
