Chapter One – A Mother's Fury

"Mom!"

The cry shattered every corner of the ballroom.

Emily Carter didn't remember dropping her champagne glass.

She only remembered running.

The crystal flute exploded against the marble floor as she pushed through rows of stunned guests, her heels striking the polished stone with desperate speed.

By the time she reached her daughter, Sophie, the little girl's eyes were filled with tears.

Red fingerprints were already forming around her tiny wrist.

Standing over her was Evelyn Ashcroft—the celebrated philanthropist, chairwoman of the Ashcroft Foundation, and the unquestioned queen of Westbridge society.

Evelyn looked at Emily with cold amusement.

"You should teach your child where she belongs."

Emily knelt first.

Not before Evelyn.

Before her daughter.

She gently brushed away Sophie's tears.

"Did she hurt you?"

Sophie nodded.

"She called me trash... because my dress wasn't expensive."

The ballroom became painfully quiet.

Emily slowly stood.

Every movement was calm.

Too calm.

"You owe my daughter an apology."

A ripple of disbelief swept across the crowd.

Nobody spoke to Evelyn Ashcroft that way.

Evelyn laughed.

"You expect me to apologize to a nobody?"

She glanced toward security.

"Remove them."

The guards hesitated.

Before either man could move, another voice echoed across the ballroom.

"I'd think very carefully before touching either of them."

The doors opened.

An elderly man with silver hair entered, followed by several attorneys and members of the hotel's executive board.

Every executive in the room immediately recognized him.

Jonathan Reeves.

Owner of the Grand Meridian Hotel.

He walked directly toward Emily.

Then, to everyone's astonishment...

He bowed slightly.

"Ms. Carter."

The room froze.

Evelyn's smile disappeared.

Jonathan turned to the crowd.

"There seems to be some confusion."

He looked directly at Evelyn.

"You've just assaulted the granddaughter of the woman who owns this property."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Emily had inherited the Grand Meridian six months earlier after the death of her grandfather.

She had never announced it publicly.

Tonight had been her first appearance as its owner.

Evelyn's face turned pale.

For the first time in decades...

She looked afraid.
