Chapter 9 - THE MOTHER WHO RETURNED FROM THE DEAD:

Victoria could not move.
General Catherine Crowe crossed the smoke-filled courtyard.
Her face was older than the photographs Victoria remembered.
A pale scar ran from her temple to her jaw.
But there was no doubt.
The woman standing before them was Victoria’s mother.
Victoria took one step forward.
Then another.
“You died.”
Catherine’s expression broke.
“That is what your father wanted you to believe.”
Victoria touched her mother’s face.
Catherine closed her eyes.
They embraced while soldiers secured the abbey.
Sebastian’s forces retreated into the forest.
Several were captured.
Others abandoned their vehicles.
Catherine had been living under military protection in a neighboring country.
Twenty years earlier, she discovered Sebastian’s financial crimes.
He arranged a staged car accident and transferred her to Blackwater Hospital.
Catherine escaped after nine months with help from a young military doctor.
She tried to return for Victoria.
Sebastian threatened to kill their daughter.
Catherine stayed hidden while building a network of officers loyal to Alexander.
“Why didn’t you contact me?” Victoria asked.
“I did.”
“I never received anything.”
“Your father intercepted every letter.”
Victoria stepped back.
“You could have come.”
“And risked leading him to you?”
“You left me with him.”
Catherine’s guilt was visible.
“I thought distance would keep you alive.”
“It did not keep me whole.”
The reunion was not simple.
Love collided with abandonment.
Relief collided with anger.
Catherine did not ask for forgiveness.
“I will spend the rest of my life accepting whatever you feel,” she said.
“But tonight, we must stop him.”
The third hairpin had activated a military emergency code created by Alexander shortly before his capture.
Eleanor discovered the code inside old palace records.
She gave the hairpin to Catherine’s contact with instructions to return it to Lily.
The woman from Saint Catherine’s Home had been part of Catherine’s network.
Sebastian threatened her son and forced her to steal the hairpin.
Lily had switched it with a replica Eleanor taught her to carry.
Adrian knelt beside Lily.
“You knew people might come after it.”
“Mommy said the silver rose was our last door.”
“You kept it hidden all this time.”
“I didn’t know who was safe.”
The words hurt Adrian.
But he respected her caution.
“You chose well.”
Catherine’s forces transported the family to a fortified command center.
There, Alexander gave his first recorded statement since his supposed death.
He described his abduction.
He named Sebastian Crowe.
He admitted signing the first Project Nightfall authorization without understanding its purpose.
“I failed my country through carelessness,” he said.
“And others suffered because I trusted power more than scrutiny.”
His honesty surprised Adrian.
Alexander did not present himself as an innocent hero.
He accepted responsibility.
The recording was encrypted and prepared for release.
They still needed the original orders from Crowe Hall.
Without them, Sebastian could claim Alexander’s memory had been damaged.
Edmund agreed to help in exchange for immunity.
Alexander refused full immunity.
“You will testify,” he said.
“And you will answer for your role.”
Edmund looked toward Lily.
He had lost his path to the throne.
For the first time, he seemed small.
“I never knew Sebastian would imprison Eleanor.”
“You knew enough,” Adrian said.
Edmund admitted that Crowe Hall’s archive could be accessed through a wine cellar.
He also revealed that Sebastian planned to leave the country before sunrise.
Catherine prepared a military operation.
Victoria insisted on joining.
“He will use Charles against me.”
Charles took her hand.
“I am already free.”
“He knows other ways to hurt us.”
Victoria looked toward Catherine.
“I need to face him.”
Her mother nodded.
“I will be beside you.”
Eleanor’s condition improved enough for her to speak in complete sentences.
She remembered placing Lily at Saint Catherine’s.
She remembered Miriam.
She remembered Blackwater Island.
But Daniel’s fate remained uncertain.
“Sebastian moved him,” Eleanor said.
“Where?”
“Crowe Hall.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“You saw him there?”
“Not clearly.”
She pressed both hands against her head.
“I heard him singing.”
“The Seven Stars?”
“Yes.”
Lily hummed the melody.
Eleanor began crying.
“He remembered her.”
Catherine believed Daniel was being held as Sebastian’s final bargaining tool.
The operation began at four in the morning.
Snow fell over Crowe Hall.
Military vehicles approached from the south.
Adrian, Catherine, Victoria, and a small team entered through the wine cellar tunnel.
Alexander remained at the command center with Lily and Eleanor.
The underground archive contained rows of locked cabinets.
Edmund’s access code opened the first door.
Inside were original detention orders.
Financial transfers.
Recorded interrogations.
Photographs of prisoners.
Catherine found her own file.
Victoria stood beside her.
Neither spoke.
Adrian searched for Daniel.
A sound came from behind the rear wall.
Someone was singing.
The voice was weak.
But the melody was unmistakable.
The Seven Stars.
Adrian opened a hidden panel.
Daniel Hart sat inside a small chamber.
His hair was gray.
His face was thin.
He looked up with uncertain eyes.
“Eleanor?” he whispered.
“No,” Adrian said.
“I’m her brother.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Lily.”
“She is alive.”
Daniel covered his face.
A broken sob escaped him.
Adrian unlocked his restraints.
Before they could leave, the archive door slammed shut.
Sebastian appeared behind the glass partition.
He held Victoria at gunpoint.
Catherine raised her weapon.
Sebastian smiled at his wife.
“You have aged.”
Catherine’s hand did not move.
“You have not changed.”
“You always did mistake disobedience for courage.”
“And you always mistook fear for loyalty.”
Victoria looked at Adrian.
Sebastian pressed the gun against her temple.
“You will give me the hairpins and the files.”
Adrian held up the archive drive.
“Release her.”
Sebastian laughed.
“You still believe this is about evidence.”
“What else is it about?”
Sebastian looked toward Daniel.
“Blood.”
He entered a code.
A steel door opened behind him.
Inside stood a young man wearing a Royal Guard uniform.
He looked nearly identical to Adrian at twenty-five.
Alexander’s eyes.
Eleanor’s dark hair.
The young man raised a gun.
Sebastian placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Adrian, meet the child your father never admitted existed.”
Catherine looked horrified.
Victoria whispered the young man’s name.
“Julian.”
Sebastian smiled.

“My son is not merely a Crowe.”
“He is Alexander’s firstborn”:
