Chapter 7 - THE PRISONER BENEATH THE CHAPEL:

The hidden panel behind Eleanor’s bed swung inward.
An elderly man emerged from the darkness.
His white hair fell to his shoulders.
His body was thin and stooped.
A scar crossed his left cheek.
But his eyes still carried the unmistakable authority of King Alexander Vale.
He held a metal candle stand like a weapon.
The masked doctor turned.
Alexander struck the syringe from his hand.
Lily ran toward Eleanor.
The doctor rushed at the old king.
Alexander stumbled but did not fall.
He drove the candle stand into the man’s stomach.
The doctor collapsed.
Adrian watched through the monitor, stunned.
His father was alive.
The gas around Adrian grew thicker.
Victoria struggled to breathe.
One tactical officer discovered the ventilation controls beneath a desk.
He reversed the system.
Fresh air flooded the room.
Adrian used Samuel’s code on the steel shutters.
The first attempt failed.
The second unlocked the eastern door.
They raced toward the chapel.
Sebastian’s guards opened fire from the upper balcony.
The tactical team returned fire.
Adrian and Victoria moved through the pews.
The old chapel had once hosted royal weddings.
Now medical cables ran beneath the altar.
Adrian reached the organ and pulled the hidden lever Samuel described.
A staircase appeared.
He descended into the underground chamber.
“Father!”
Alexander turned.
For a moment, he looked confused.
Then recognition entered his eyes.
“Adrian?”
Adrian crossed the room.
He embraced the man he had buried sixteen years earlier.
Alexander’s body felt fragile.
His hands trembled against Adrian’s back.
“My son.”
The words destroyed every wall Adrian had built around his grief.
Behind them, Lily knelt beside Eleanor.
Her mother stared at her as though she were seeing a ghost.
“Mommy?”
Eleanor reached for Lily’s face.
“Seven stars,” she whispered.
Lily began humming the lullaby.
Eleanor’s expression softened.
“My little lion.”
Lily threw herself into her mother’s arms.
Eleanor held her with desperate strength.
Adrian wanted the moment to last.
It could not.
Gunfire echoed above them.
Miriam entered with the medical team.
“We have to leave.”
Alexander pointed toward a tunnel behind the bed.
“It leads beyond the north wall.”
They moved through the tunnel.
Charles was recovered from another chamber by the tactical officers.
Victoria embraced him.
He had several injuries but could walk.
Sebastian was nowhere to be found.
The escape tunnel opened inside a forest outside the palace grounds.
Armored vehicles waited.
As they drove away, flames appeared in the palace windows.
Sebastian had ordered part of the underground complex destroyed.
Evidence burned beneath the chapel.
But Adrian still possessed the list from Lily’s dress.
Eleanor was transported to a secure hospital.
Her condition was unstable.
Years of drugs had damaged her memory.
She remembered Lily clearly.
She remembered Daniel in fragments.
Her memories of Adrian shifted between childhood affection and adult suspicion.
Alexander suffered from similar gaps.
He could recall national events from decades earlier but forgot that Eleanor had grown up.
He repeatedly asked why she was not attending school.
Adrian sat between their hospital rooms, grieving lives that had been stolen in pieces.
Lily refused to leave Eleanor’s side.
She slept with her head against her mother’s arm.
At dawn, Alexander asked to speak privately with Adrian.
“The list is not enough,” he said.
“It proves people were taken.”
“It does not prove Sebastian ordered it.”
Alexander touched the scar on his cheek.
“He made others sign the documents.”
“Then how do we expose him?”
“There is a royal archive beneath Crowe Hall.”
Sebastian’s family estate lay outside the city.
“The original Project Nightfall orders are stored there.”
“How do you know?”
“I signed one.”
Adrian stared at him.
Alexander looked ashamed.
“Sebastian told me it authorized a counterterrorism operation.”
“What did it really authorize?”
“The first detention.”
Alexander’s voice weakened.
“When I discovered the truth, I threatened to expose him.”
“He took you before you could.”
“Yes.”
“Why did he keep you alive?”
“He needed access to royal accounts protected by biometric verification.”
Adrian understood.
Sebastian had used Alexander’s eyes and fingerprints to transfer funds for years.
The dead king had financed his own prison.
Alexander reached beneath his hospital shirt.
A small metal seal hung from a cord.
“The archive requires this.”
Adrian accepted it.
The seal contained the winged lion.
“Sebastian will expect us to go there.”
“Yes.”
“Then why risk it?”
“Because he is preparing to escape.”
Alexander explained that Crowe Hall contained a private airfield.
Sebastian maintained diplomatic relationships with governments that would refuse extradition.
“If he leaves Valeria, he will disappear.”
Adrian called Marcus Reed.
Surveillance teams were sent to Crowe Hall.
The media had begun reporting the attack on the Winter Palace.
Rumors spread that King Alexander was alive.
Government officials denied everything.
The Royal Council requested an emergency meeting.
Adrian refused.
He no longer knew which council members served Sebastian.
Victoria sat beside Charles.
She had given police a statement about her father.
Yet she remained afraid.
“He will not flee without destroying everyone who can testify,” she said.
Adrian looked toward Eleanor’s room.
“Then we move them tonight.”
A secure convoy transported Alexander, Eleanor, Lily, Miriam, and Charles to a military hospital.
Only four people knew the route.
Halfway there, the lead vehicle exploded.
The convoy stopped.
Masked attackers emerged from the trees.
Adrian’s security team returned fire.
The ambulance carrying Eleanor swerved off the road.
Adrian climbed from his vehicle and ran through the smoke.
The rear doors of the ambulance stood open.
Miriam was unconscious on the ground.
Eleanor and Lily were gone.
A black helicopter rose beyond the trees.
Victoria stared upward.
The aircraft bore the emblem of the Royal Guard.
Only one person outside the palace had authority to deploy that unit.
Alexander stepped from the second ambulance.
His face filled with horror.
“The Royal Council.”
Adrian looked at his father.
“Who commands them?”
Alexander whispered a name Adrian had trusted since childhood.
“Your uncle, Prince Edmund.”
Adrian’s phone received a photograph.
Lily and Eleanor sat inside the helicopter.
Prince Edmund smiled between them.
Beneath the image was a message.
The bloodline has returned to its rightful guardian.
Alexander read the words.
Then he revealed the secret Sebastian had hidden even from the royal family.
