Chapter 12 - THE VOICES IN THE WALLS:

Adrian forced open the chamber door.

Victoria was strapped to a medical chair.

A physician held a syringe near her neck.

Catherine fired into the ceiling.

The physician dropped the needle.

Sebastian’s guards turned.

Adrian tackled the nearest man.

Catherine moved toward her daughter.

Sebastian escaped through a rear passage.

The entire confrontation continued broadcasting through the opera house.

Police surrounded every tunnel exit.

The physician surrendered.

Victoria was conscious but disoriented.

Catherine released her restraints.

“I’m here.”

Victoria looked at her mother.

This time, she did not ask why Catherine had left.

She simply held on.

Sebastian reached the underground river beneath the city.

A small boat waited.

Adrian followed him.

They emerged into a stone channel beyond the opera district.

Sebastian started the engine.

Adrian jumped aboard.

The boat struck the tunnel walls.

Sebastian swung a metal hook.

Adrian blocked the first blow.

The second cut his coat.

“You could have ruled beside me,” Sebastian said.

“I would rather stand beside the people you tried to erase.”

“People do not want truth.”

“They want comfort.”

“Then why are you running?”

Sebastian attacked again.

Adrian seized the hook and threw it into the water.

The boat entered the open river.

Police lights filled both banks.

Sebastian reached inside his coat.

Adrian expected a gun.

Instead, the older man removed a small remote.

“One final door,” he said.

He pressed the button.

Explosions shook the underground opera tunnels.

Sections of the prison began collapsing.

Catherine carried Victoria toward the stairs.

Daniel helped Miriam move surviving prisoners.

Alexander coordinated emergency crews.

Lily watched maps at the command station.

She noticed one tunnel had not been evacuated.

“Mommy is down there.”

Eleanor had entered the lower level searching for records connected to Daniel.

Adrian heard Lily’s warning through his earpiece.

He looked toward Sebastian.

“What did you do?”

“I buried the past.”

Adrian struck him.

The remote fell into the river.

Police boats surrounded them.

Sebastian was arrested again.

This time, dozens of cameras recorded it.

Adrian did not remain to watch.

He returned to the opera tunnel.

Smoke filled the underground chambers.

Lily tried to follow him.

Alexander stopped her.

“I cannot lose her again,” Lily cried.

“You will not.”

Alexander stayed with her while Adrian and the rescue team entered the collapsed section.

They found Eleanor beneath a broken beam.

She was conscious.

A metal cabinet had protected her from the falling ceiling.

Daniel crawled beside her.

Together, they lifted the beam.

Eleanor held a folder against her chest.

“I found the final patient transfers.”

“Forget the records,” Adrian said.

“We need to move.”

“The records say where the children were taken.”

Adrian stopped.

“Children?”

Project Nightfall had expanded.

Sebastian experimented on children whose parents opposed him.

Some were placed in orphanages under new identities.

Others had grown into adults who did not know their real families.

Saint Catherine’s Home was one of several institutions used.

The ballroom gala had not been an accident.

Eleanor arranged for Lily to attend because she believed Adrian would be there.

She trusted the crest to reach him.

But she also wanted the charity’s records investigated.

Victoria’s foundation had unknowingly funded the movement of Nightfall children.

The scandal became larger than the royal family.

Thousands of adoption records required review.

Victoria announced that every asset from her foundation would be placed into a survivor recovery fund.

She resigned from public life.

Some people praised her.

Others said no donation could erase her cruelty.

Victoria agreed with the critics.

“Redemption is not a purchase,” she told reporters.

“It is a debt I will spend my life paying.”

Sebastian’s trial resumed.

His confession from the opera house was admitted as evidence.

The stolen list was recovered.

The physician testified.

The jury found Sebastian guilty on every major charge.

He received multiple life sentences.

He did not look at his victims during sentencing.

As guards led him away, he turned toward Victoria.

“You will become me.”

Victoria stood beside Catherine.

“No.”

“I will become everything you tried to remove.”

Prince Edmund was convicted of kidnapping, conspiracy, and abuse of authority.

Julian received a reduced sentence because of his cooperation.

He began psychological treatment and agreed to assist investigators in locating former Nightfall officers.

Samuel Rhodes pleaded guilty to conspiracy and obstruction.

At sentencing, Eleanor addressed him.

“You betrayed us.”

Samuel lowered his head.

“You also saved Lily at the station.”

He began crying.

“I do not know which act defines you.”

Eleanor looked toward the judge.

“Perhaps that is what his remaining life should be used to answer.”

Samuel received twelve years.

Miriam was granted limited immunity in exchange for testimony and lifelong medical service to survivors.

The public debate over the monarchy continued.

Parliament voted to end hereditary political authority.

The crown became a museum artifact.

Alexander retained the honorary title of king for his lifetime but possessed no legal power.

Adrian transferred most royal business holdings into independent trusts.

He kept Vale International separate but opened its records to ensure Sebastian had not hidden more money inside the company.

Daniel and Eleanor began rebuilding their relationship.

Some days, they remembered everything.

Other days, one of them became lost inside the past.

They did not pretend love could repair every injury.

They chose patience instead.

Lily returned to school under a protected identity.

She refused the title Princess Lily.

When a teacher asked what name she preferred, she answered, “Lily Hart Vale.”

She carried both families.

Six months after the trial, investigators reviewing Saint Catherine’s records found a photograph of another child wearing a silver royal symbol.

The boy had been adopted overseas nine years earlier.

Eleanor did not recognize him.

Alexander did.

The boy resembled Julian, but the pendant belonged to a branch of the family believed extinct.

Adrian examined the adoption file.

The child’s original name had been erased.

Only one handwritten note remained.

The seventh star has two heirs.

Adrian brought the file to Catherine.

She read it twice.

Then she revealed that Project Nightfall had a second purpose.

Sebastian had not only erased enemies.

He had collected children with royal ancestry.

“Why?” Adrian asked.

“To build a bloodline he could control.”

“Is the boy another false heir?”

Catherine looked at the photograph.

“No.”

She recognized the pendant.

It had belonged to Alexander’s youngest sister, Princess Helena, who disappeared thirty years earlier.

Helena had supposedly drowned.

No body was recovered.

Alexander sat down.

“My sister had a child?”

Catherine nodded.

“And Sebastian found him before we did.”

The main conspiracy had ended.

But hundreds of stolen identities still waited to be restored.

Alexander looked toward the photograph.

“We owe them the truth.”

Adrian agreed.

Not as princes.

Not as rulers.

As family.

The next investigation would take years.

Yet this time, no one would search alone.

Lily entered carrying her schoolbooks.

She saw the photograph.

“Who is he?”

Adrian placed the file inside a secure folder.

“Someone who may need our help.”

Lily touched the silver pendant in the picture.

“Then we should find him.”

Eleanor stood behind her daughter.

Her eyes were clear.

“We will.”

The family that had once protected a crown now chose to protect the people harmed in its name.

Their new purpose began with the names hidden inside the opera house:
