Chapter 8 - THE LAKE HOUSE

Bullets tore through the front windows.
Dominic pulled Chloe behind the stone fireplace.
Matteo dragged Carlo toward the basement stairs.
The brothers moved with the same brutal precision.
Whatever had divided them, survival had been taught by the same father.
“How many exits?” Dominic shouted.
“Three,” Matteo replied.
“Vittorio knows all of them.”
“Then give me a fourth.”
Matteo kicked open a cabinet beneath the stairs.
A narrow tunnel descended toward the frozen lake.
Chloe stared.
“Every Russo house has secrets?”
Dominic reloaded.
“Only the ones built by men expecting betrayal.”
They moved into the tunnel.
Carlo remained weak but conscious.
Matteo sealed the entrance behind them.
The passage ended inside an old boathouse.
Ice covered the water.
A snowmobile waited beneath a tarp.
“Only seats three,” Chloe said.
Matteo handed Carlo the keys.
“You take Chloe.”
“No,” Dominic said.
“We stay together.”
Matteo looked at his brother.
“You still think standing in front makes you a leader.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means Vittorio knows exactly where you’ll stand.”
Gunfire struck the boathouse wall.
Matteo opened a floor panel.
A second snowmobile waited beneath it.
“Carlo and Chloe go east.”
“Dominic and I draw them north.”
Chloe shook her head.
“The evidence.”
Matteo pointed toward the silver ballerina in her coat pocket.
She had brought the broken piece because Luca refused to let Dominic carry it.
“The ballerina is the evidence.”
Chloe examined it.
Matteo twisted the tiny base.
A memory card slid free.
“Elena hid the lake-house archive inside the toy.”
“Then why send us here?”
“To find me.”
Engines approached.
There was no time.
Chloe climbed behind Carlo.
The snowmobile burst across the frozen lake.
Wind cut through her coat.
Shots followed.
One bullet struck the rear panel.
Carlo swerved.
The ice cracked ahead.
“Hold on!”
They crossed as a black SUV reached the shoreline.
The vehicle could not follow.
But men on snowmobiles could.
Two riders appeared behind them.
Carlo handed Chloe a gun.
“I don’t know how to use this.”
“Point away from me.”
“That is not instruction.”
He turned sharply.
The first pursuer moved alongside.
Chloe struck him with the gun rather than firing.
He lost control and slid across the ice.
The second raised his weapon.
A shot came from the north.
Matteo had doubled back.
The pursuer fell.
They reached the eastern shore.
Agent Reyes waited with federal vehicles.
He took the memory card immediately.
“Where are Dominic and Matteo?”
Carlo looked back across the lake.
Gunfire flashed near the house.
“Still fighting.”
Chloe started toward another snowmobile.
Reyes stopped her.
“You go back, you become leverage.”
“They may die.”
“And the evidence dies if you carry it back.”
She hated the logic.
They waited seventeen minutes.
Dominic and Matteo appeared through the snow.
Both were wounded.
Both alive.
Inside a federal command van, Reyes opened the memory card.
Video files filled the screen.
Elena had recorded warehouse transactions, patient lists, and private conversations.
One video showed Vittorio speaking with Dr. Salvatore DeLuca, the Russo family physician.
“Dental records are ready,” DeLuca said.
“And the substitute?”
“Similar enough after the fire.”
A dead woman had been placed in Elena’s car.
Another victim without a name.
Vittorio had created a death and hidden a survival in the same explosion.
The next recording showed Lakeshore clinic.
Elena lay unconscious inside Room B-19.
The date was six months earlier.
“She was alive then,” Chloe whispered.
Matteo nodded.
“I saw her through a service camera three days ago.”
“Why didn’t you rescue her?”
“Because the clinic has armed security and underground exits.”
Dominic looked toward him.
“You could have called me.”
“You were still starting wars for Vittorio.”
“I would have believed you.”
Matteo laughed bitterly.
“You didn’t believe your wife.”
Dominic absorbed the blow.
He no longer defended himself.
The final file contained a ledger.
Names of judges.
Police officers.
Hospital administrators.
Trafficked women.
Children given false identities.
Payments routed through Moretti and Russo businesses without either family’s full knowledge.
Vittorio had used the war to hide his own operation.
The Morettis attacked Russo docks because they believed Dominic was trafficking through their territory.
Dominic retaliated because he believed the Morettis killed Elena.
Vittorio profited from both sides.
Agent Reyes leaned back.
“This can dismantle half the city.”
Dominic looked at the list.
“Then do it.”
Reyes studied him.
“You understand your name is inside these files too.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“Crimes you authorized.”
“Money you accepted.”
“Men you ordered beaten or killed.”
Chloe watched him.
This was the moment he could choose the usual defense.
Family.
Ignorance.
Necessity.
Instead, Dominic said, “I understand.”
Matteo looked at his brother for the first time without contempt.
Reyes closed the computer.
“We need Elena alive to authenticate several records.”
“Then we go to the clinic,” Dominic said.
“No.”
Reyes pointed toward the screen.
“Vittorio expects you.”
“He doesn’t expect the Morettis.”
Dominic’s expression darkened.
“No.”
Matteo crossed his arms.
“Still protecting pride?”
“They killed our men.”
“Because Vittorio sent them false proof.”
“They still pulled triggers.”
“So did we.”
The brothers stared at one another.
Chloe stepped between them.
“Elena is in a room while you argue over which criminal family has the cleaner hands.”
Silence.
Dominic looked away first.
Reyes arranged a meeting with Sofia Moretti, head of the rival family after her father’s death.
They met inside a federal safe location.
Sofia entered wearing a white coat and a scar across her throat.
She placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Vittorio speaking with one of her captains.
“He started the war,” she said.
Dominic looked at her.
“You continued it.”
“So did you.”
Neither apologized.
Sofia turned toward Chloe.
“You’re the nanny.”
“I have a name.”
A faint smile appeared.
“Good.”
Sofia opened a second file.
“My people entered Lakeshore yesterday.”
“Room B-19 was empty.”
Chloe’s heart dropped.
“Where did they take Elena?”
Sofia showed them security footage.
A medical convoy left the clinic at dawn.
Its destination was unknown.
But one ambulance carried a symbol Luca had drawn repeatedly.
A black wolf beneath a crown.
Dominic recognized it.
The emblem belonged to the original Russo estate in Sicily.
Vittorio was moving Elena out of the country.
May you like
The convoy was heading toward the private airfield.
They had less than two hours.
