Chapter 18 - THE MUSIC BOX

Luca turned twelve on a rainy November afternoon.

He had grown tall.

His dark curls remained impossible to control.

He spoke easily most days.

Thunder still made him tense.

Broken glass remained difficult.

But fear no longer controlled every room.

Elena organized a small birthday dinner.

No ballroom.

No guards.

Pizza.

Cake.

Six friends from school.

Dominic arrived early and asked where to sit.

Luca pointed toward the chair beside him.

The distance had closed over years, not speeches.

Chloe gave Luca a repaired sketchbook containing every drawing he made during the silent years.

Rebecca gave him a telescope.

Matteo sent a silver compass.

Elena brought out the music box.

The room became quiet.

Luca stared at it.

The glass had been restored.

The ballerina stood straight.

He had not heard the melody since the night it broke.

“You do not have to open it,” Elena said.

Luca touched the lid.

“Did you hide the key inside?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know I would drop it?”

“No.”

“Did you know Dad would scare me?”

Elena looked toward Dominic.

“I knew it was possible.”

Dominic did not defend himself.

Luca turned the key.

The melody began.

His hand trembled.

Chloe sat nearby.

Dominic remained still.

Luca listened through the first verse.

Then the second.

Tears filled his eyes.

“I remember you singing.”

Elena covered her mouth.

“I sang badly.”

“Yes.”

Everyone laughed softly.

The music ended.

Luca closed the lid.

“I want to keep it.”

“It is yours,” Elena said.

He looked toward Dominic.

“Do you still get mad when you see it?”

Dominic answered honestly.

“I feel grief.”

“And shame.”

“But not at you.”

Luca nodded.

“That’s good.”

After the party, Dominic helped clean.

A glass slipped from his hand and shattered.

The sound froze him.

Luca entered the kitchen.

For a second, father and son stared at the pieces.

Then Luca said, “Careless.”

Dominic’s face changed.

Luca smiled.

“Joking.”

Dominic laughed.

The sound surprised them both.

Chloe brought a broom.

“No one move until shoes are on.”

They cleaned together.

No shouting.

No blame.

Only broken glass.

Later, Luca found Chloe on the porch.

“Are you going to marry Dad?”

She nearly dropped her tea.

“Why would you ask that?”

“You both look annoying around each other.”

“That is not evidence.”

“He has a ring.”

Chloe looked through the window.

Dominic stood in the kitchen speaking with Elena.

“You saw it?”

“Accident.”

“Did you open his bag?”

“Maybe.”

“Luca.”

He grinned.

Chloe had thought about marriage.

She loved Dominic.

She trusted the man he practiced becoming.

But the Russo name carried weight.

So did the past.

That evening, Dominic asked her to walk near the lake.

He did not kneel immediately.

Instead, he said, “I need to ask before I ask.”

“That sounds complicated.”

“I am trying not to trap you with a public gesture.”

“Good.”

“I want to marry you.”

Chloe looked toward the water.

“Why?”

“Because I love you.”

“Not enough.”

Dominic nodded.

“Because you know what I have done.”

“You do not romanticize my change.”

“You tell me when fear enters the room before I see it.”

“And because life with you feels chosen.”

“Not inherited.”

“Not ordered.”

“Chosen.”

Chloe’s eyes filled.

“What happens when you fail?”

“I tell the truth.”

“I accept distance.”

“I repair what I can.”

“And I do not call love permission.”

She looked at him.

“And if I say no?”

“I go home.”

“I remain Luca’s father.”

“I see you when you choose.”

“No punishment.”

“No anger.”

“No withdrawal.”

Dominic opened the ring box.

The ring was simple.

No family stone.

No Russo crest.

Chloe smiled.

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

Relief moved through him.

Then she added, “Long engagement.”

“How long?”

“Long enough that Luca stops searching your bags.”

Dominic looked toward the house.

“He knows?”

“He found the ring.”

“That child survived armed kidnappers and will die because he cannot respect privacy.”

Chloe laughed.

Dominic laughed too.

Inside, Luca watched from the window.

When Chloe nodded, he lifted both fists in victory.

Elena stood behind him.

Her expression was warm.

Not wounded.

The marriage had ended.

The family had not.

Elena later told Chloe, “You are not replacing me.”

“I know.”

“You are building something different.”

“I hope so.”

“You already are.”

The music box played once more before bedtime.

May you like

This time, Dominic remained in the room.

Luca did not ask him to leave.
