Chapter 11 - THE STOCKYARD

The old stockyard had been abandoned for twenty years.
Russo companies still owned the land through shell corporations.
Underground tunnels connected the warehouses.
Dominic knew every entrance.
Vittorio knew which ones he would choose.
Agent Reyes refused to let Dominic go alone.
Dominic refused to wait.
Chloe followed despite everyone telling her not to.
“You are not coming inside,” Dominic said.
“You don’t decide that.”
“Luca needs someone outside if I fail.”
The sentence stopped her.
He was no longer pretending failure was impossible.
Chloe remained with Reyes in the command vehicle.
Dominic entered through the front gate unarmed.
At least visibly.
Cameras followed him.
Vittorio’s voice came through warehouse speakers.
“My nephew.”
Dominic walked beneath rusted beams and hanging chains.
“Where are they?”
“You always begin with demands.”
“Where are they?”
A light turned on.
Luca sat inside a glass office above the main floor.
Elena was tied to a chair beside him.
Vittorio stood behind them.
“Come upstairs.”
Dominic climbed.
Chloe watched through a tactical camera.
Luca’s face was pale.
But he was speaking to Elena.
That mattered.
Vittorio held a gun.
“You gave the federal government our accounts.”
“They were never ours.”
“You sound like your wife.”
“She was right.”
Vittorio laughed.
“You think surrender makes you moral?”
“No.”
Dominic stopped at the office entrance.
“It makes me useful.”
“To whom?”
“The people we harmed.”
Vittorio’s face hardened.
“You were born to lead.”
“I was trained to obey men like you.”
The words struck.
Dominic had finally recognized his throne as another kind of cage.
Vittorio pulled Luca closer.
The boy whimpered.
Dominic’s hands remained visible.
“Let them go.”
“In exchange for what?”
“Me.”
Elena looked at him sharply.
“No.”
Vittorio smiled.
“Still pretending sacrifice erases guilt.”
“No.”
Dominic kept his eyes on Luca.
“But it may keep my son alive.”
Vittorio ordered him inside.
The glass door closed.
A signal disappeared from Reyes’s monitor.
The office was shielded.
Chloe could no longer hear.
She saw Vittorio handcuff Dominic.
Then Elena kicked the desk.
A lamp fell.
The room went dark.
Gunfire flashed behind the glass.
Reyes gave the assault order.
Chloe ran before anyone could stop her.
She climbed the metal stairs.
The door was locked.
Inside, shadows struggled.
A shot shattered the glass.
Chloe covered her face and entered.
Dominic lay on the floor.
Blood spread from his side.
Elena shielded Luca beneath the desk.
Vittorio moved toward a rear tunnel.
Chloe grabbed a broken chair leg and struck his injured knee.
He fell.
The gun slid away.
Vittorio caught Chloe by the throat.
“You.”
His fingers tightened.
“You should have stayed a poor little girl with medical bills.”
Chloe drove the broken wood into his shoulder.
He released her.
Dominic reached the gun.
Vittorio froze.
“Nephew.”
Dominic aimed.
For years, a man in his position would have fired.
No court.
No witnesses.
No questions.
Vittorio smiled because he expected exactly that.
“Do it.”
Dominic’s hand shook.
“You taught me this.”
“Yes.”
“You made violence easy.”
“Yes.”
“Then you should be proud.”
Dominic lowered the gun.
Vittorio’s smile vanished.
“No.”
Dominic stepped back.
“I will not give you the ending you trained me to choose.”
Federal agents entered.
They arrested Vittorio alive.
He screamed as they dragged him away.
“You are nothing without the family!”
Dominic looked toward Luca.
“That is what I need to find out.”
Then he collapsed.
The bullet had entered below his ribs.
Chloe pressed both hands against the wound.
“Stay awake.”
Dominic looked at Luca.
The boy crawled toward him.
For the first time, he did not hide behind Chloe.
“Daddy?”
Dominic’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“Don’t die.”
“I’m trying.”
Luca touched his hand.
Dominic did not grip too tightly.
He let the child decide the contact.
Paramedics carried him out.
Elena sat beside Chloe in the ambulance.
Neither woman spoke.
They had both been hurt by Dominic.
They had both seen him choose differently.
That did not erase the past.
But it changed what could happen next.
At the hospital, surgeons operated for six hours.
Dominic survived.
When he woke, Agent Reyes was waiting.
“So is the United States Attorney,” Reyes said.
Dominic looked toward the window.
“What happens now?”
“You testify.”
“You surrender control.”
“You answer for every crime we can prove.”
Dominic nodded.
“And my son?”
“That depends on Elena.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
“Good.”
Reyes looked surprised.
“You don’t want to fight?”
“I have spent my life fighting for things as if owning them proved love.”
He looked toward the door.
“Luca is not territory.”
May you like
Outside the room, Chloe heard every word.
For the first time, Dominic Russo sounded like a father.
