Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Blue File

Nathan's heart seemed to stop.

“Grandpa?”

The word echoed through the basement.

His father slowly opened his eyes.

Nathan stared at him.

“You know Lily.”

It wasn't a question.

His father said nothing.

Nathan tightened his grip around the blue folder.

“You've met her before.”

Still nothing.

Nathan's voice rose.

“Have you?”

His father finally nodded.

“Once.”

“When?”

“Four years ago.”

Nathan's face hardened.

“That's impossible.”

“I saw her the night she was born.”

Nathan looked toward the television.

Lily was still on the screen.

The image showed Grace desperately trying to reach her daughter while the masked figure kept the child restrained.

Nathan's hands began to shake.

“You were at the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was alive.”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe she didn't exist.”

His father lowered his head.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

He looked at the blue folder.

“But nobody tells me what I'm supposed to be protected from.”

His father stepped closer.

“The truth.”

Nathan stared at him.

“I've had enough lies.”

Then the basement speakers crackled.

The distorted voice returned.

“Sixty seconds.”

Nathan looked at the timer.

01:00

The voice continued.

“Bring the file.”

Nathan grabbed the folder.

His father caught his arm.

“Listen to me.”

Nathan turned.

“If you go upstairs with that folder, they will take it.”

“Then I'll stop them.”

“You can't.”

“Watch me.”

His father looked into his son's eyes.

“You still don't understand.”

Nathan pulled his arm free.

“Then explain it.”

His father took a breath.

“Lily isn't valuable because she's your daughter.”

Nathan froze.

“Then why?”

“Because she inherited something.”

“What?”

“Something your grandfather left behind.”

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

“What did he leave?”

His father looked toward the blue folder.

“The Cole Trust.”

Nathan frowned.

“I know about the trust.”

“No.”

His father shook his head.

“You know about the public trust.”

“There was another one.”

Nathan's expression changed.

“How much?”

“Everything.”

Nathan stared at him.

“The entire private fortune.”

His father nodded.

“The land. The offshore accounts. The controlling shares.”

Nathan's face hardened.

“Who owns it?”

His father whispered,

“Lily.”

Nathan couldn't speak.

The timer reached:

00:42

“That makes no sense.”

“It was established before she was born.”

“Why would my grandfather leave everything to a child he never met?”

“Because he knew what would happen to you.”

Nathan looked at the television.

Lily was crying silently.

Grace was trying to shield her.

Nathan's voice softened.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because the moment you knew, they would come for her.”

“They came anyway.”

His father looked away.

“Yes.”

Nathan suddenly noticed something in the television footage.

The masked man wasn't holding Lily randomly.

His left hand was gripping her shoulder.

On his wrist was a distinctive silver watch.

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

He knew that watch.

He had seen it earlier.

At the hospital footage.

On Daniel Mercer.

Nathan looked at his father.

“It's Daniel.”

His father nodded.

“Yes.”

Nathan's expression became furious.

“He has my daughter.”

“He has more than that.”

“What?”

“He has the original trust documents.”

Nathan looked down at the blue folder.

“No.”

His father nodded.

“The folder you're holding contains copies.”

Nathan opened it quickly.

Inside were contracts, bank statements, and photographs.

But the final section was empty.

Nathan looked up.

“Where are the originals?”

His father pointed toward the wall.

“Behind the safe.”

Nathan pressed against the stone panel.

Nothing happened.

Then he noticed a tiny fingerprint scanner.

He placed his hand against it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a black metal box.

Nathan pulled it out.

His father's face tightened.

“That should never have been opened.”

Nathan opened the lid.

Inside was a single envelope.

His name was written across it.

NATHAN.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

The letter inside was written by his grandfather.

Only four paragraphs.

Nathan read the first.

Then the second.

By the third, his face had gone pale.

The final paragraph contained one sentence:

If Lily is ever found, do not trust the man who claims to be her father.

Nathan stopped.

He slowly looked toward his father.

“Who claims to be her father?”

His father didn't answer.

Nathan's eyes dropped to the paternity report.

Matthew Whitmore.

His father's supposedly missing brother.

Nathan suddenly understood why Charles had tried so desperately to control the story.

Why Victoria had been terrified.

Why Daniel had been involved.

But one question remained.

“Where is Matthew?”

His father looked at him.

“Standing closer than you think.”

Nathan froze.

“What does that mean?”

His father pointed toward the basement television.

Nathan turned.

The masked man holding Lily had removed his gloves.

Then he reached up.

Slowly.

He pulled away the mask.

Nathan stared at the screen.

His blood ran cold.

It wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Charles.

It wasn't anyone Nathan had expected.

It was a man who looked almost exactly like Nathan's father.

A man Nathan had seen only once before.

In an old family photograph.

His father's missing brother.

Matthew Whitmore.

The timer reached:

00:10

Nathan's father whispered,

“Now you know why I disappeared.”

Nathan looked at the screen.

Matthew smiled directly into the camera.

Then he spoke.

“Hello, nephew.”

The timer reached zero.

The entire house went dark again.

And somewhere upstairs, a gunshot echoed through the silence.
