Chapter 14: The Woman Who Knew Everything

Nathan stared at Victoria.

For a moment, the entire tunnel seemed to disappear.

“You?”

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

Elizabeth stood silently nearby.

Grace looked devastated.

Noah stared at the floor.

Nathan's voice trembled.

“Tell me she's lying.”

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Nathan took another step toward her.

“Tell me.”

Victoria finally whispered,

“She isn't.”

Nathan felt as though the ground had shifted beneath him.

“You're Noah's mother.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew for fourteen years.”

Victoria began crying.

“I didn't have a choice.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.”

He looked around the tunnel.

Everyone had an excuse.

Everyone had a secret.

And every secret had cost him years of his life.

Nathan pointed toward Noah.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Victoria wiped her tears.

“Because Charles threatened to kill him.”

Nathan's expression hardened.

“Charles.”

“Yes.”

“He controlled you.”

“Yes.”

“But you still worked with him.”

Victoria shook her head.

“I was trying to get Noah back.”

Nathan looked at the boy.

“Where did you think he was?”

Victoria's voice broke.

“I thought he was dead.”

Noah looked up.

“You never came for me.”

Victoria stared at him.

“I did.”

“When?”

“Every year.”

Noah frowned.

“I never saw you.”

“I watched from a distance.”

Nathan's anger softened for a second.

Then he remembered the years.

“You watched him grow up without you.”

Victoria nodded.

“I was afraid that if I got close, Charles would know.”

Nathan turned toward Elizabeth.

“And you knew all of this?”

Elizabeth smiled.

“I knew everything.”

Nathan's jaw tightened.

“Then why reveal it now?”

“Because the trust is ready.”

Nathan looked at the documents.

“What happens when it activates?”

Elizabeth pointed toward Noah.

“He becomes the controlling heir.”

Nathan frowned.

“And Lily?”

“She becomes the secondary heir.”

Nathan looked at Lily.

“Why would the trust be divided?”

“Because your grandfather didn't trust anyone.”

Elizabeth paused.

“He believed one child could be manipulated.”

She looked at Noah.

“But two children together could protect each other.”

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

“Then why did you spend fourteen years separating them?”

Elizabeth's expression changed.

“Because I didn't know which child would survive.”

Silence.

Nathan stepped toward her.

“You're sick.”

Elizabeth smiled faintly.

“Perhaps.”

Daniel suddenly interrupted.

“She isn't the only one.”

Nathan turned.

Daniel held up another document.

“I found this in Charles's private office.”

Nathan took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

A custody agreement.

Nathan's name.

Victoria's name.

Noah's name.

But the signature at the bottom was neither Nathan's nor Victoria's.

It belonged to Charles.

Nathan looked at Victoria.

“You never signed this.”

“No.”

“Neither did I.”

“No.”

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“Then it's forged.”

Daniel nodded.

“There's more.”

He handed Nathan a second document.

A hospital record.

Nathan read it.

Then his face changed.

BIRTH MOTHER: VICTORIA WHITMORE.

FATHER: NATHAN COLE.

Nathan looked at Noah.

Tears filled his eyes.

He had spent years believing his son was gone.

Now the truth was sitting right in front of him.

Nathan slowly approached Noah.

The boy didn't move.

Nathan stopped a few feet away.

“I should have found you.”

Noah's eyes filled with tears.

“You didn't know.”

“I should have.”

“You were lied to.”

Nathan shook his head.

“That doesn't make the years come back.”

Noah looked at him.

“No.”

Nathan opened his arms.

Noah hesitated.

Then he stepped forward.

Nathan hugged him.

For the first time, neither of them tried to hide their tears.

Lily watched them.

Then she walked over and wrapped her arms around both of them.

Grace turned away.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Even Daniel looked down.

For one brief moment, the secrets stopped mattering.

Then the tunnel lights turned red.

A computerized voice announced:

TRUST ACTIVATION SEQUENCE INITIATED.

Everyone froze.

Elizabeth smiled.

“It's beginning.”

Nathan stepped away from Noah.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

She pointed toward the pendant.

“The system recognized both heirs.”

Nathan looked at the metal chip.

The red light was blinking faster.

A screen appeared on the tunnel wall.

HEIR ONE: NOAH COLE

HEIR TWO: LILY COLE

PATERNITY VERIFIED

Nathan stared.

“Lily Cole?”

Grace looked at him.

“She was never supposed to carry my name.”

Nathan understood.

Someone had intentionally registered Lily under Grace's surname to hide her connection to the Cole family.

The screen changed.

FINAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

A voice asked:

“State your name.”

Noah looked at Nathan.

Nathan nodded.

The boy stepped forward.

“My name is Noah Cole.”

The system beeped.

IDENTITY ACCEPTED.

Everyone held their breath.

Then the system turned toward Lily.

“State your name.”

Lily looked frightened.

Nathan crouched beside her.

“You can do it.”

Lily looked at him.

“My name is Lily Cole.”

The system beeped.

IDENTITY ACCEPTED.

Then another message appeared.

BOTH HEIRS VERIFIED.

Elizabeth's smile disappeared.

“No.”

The screen changed again.

TRUST TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Nathan stared.

“It's over.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

Daniel pointed at the screen.

“There is one final beneficiary.”

Nathan frowned.

A third name appeared.

BENEFICIARY: UNKNOWN

Nathan's expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

His father stepped forward.

“It means your grandfather left something else.”

“What?”

His father looked toward Grace.

Grace's face went pale.

“No…”

Nathan turned.

“What?”

Grace slowly shook her head.

“I thought they destroyed it.”

“What did they destroy?”

She whispered,

“The third birth record.”

Nathan stared at her.

“Whose?”

Grace looked at Victoria.

Victoria's face became terrified.

Elizabeth stepped backward.

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

Nathan noticed.

“Who is the third child?”

Nobody answered.

Then the tunnel doors suddenly opened.

A little boy stood on the other side.

He was about six years old.

He had Nathan's eyes.

And in his hand was an old photograph of Nathan and Grace.

The boy looked directly at Nathan.

Then he whispered,

“Daddy?”

Nathan couldn't move.

Grace covered her mouth.

Victoria began shaking.

May you like

And Elizabeth whispered one sentence:

“That child was never supposed to be found.”
