Chapter 15: The Child They Could Never Erase

Nathan stared at the little boy standing in the doorway.
Six years old.
Small.
Pale.
Holding the old photograph against his chest.
His hazel eyes were fixed on Nathan with a strange mixture of fear and hope.
“Daddy?”
The word broke something inside Nathan.
He slowly crouched.
“What’s your name?”
The boy looked toward Grace.
Grace was crying too hard to speak.
Then the boy answered.
“Eli.”
Nathan's heart pounded.
“Eli what?”
The boy hesitated.
“Eli Cole.”
Nathan looked at his father.
His father closed his eyes.
“You knew.”
Nathan stood.
“You knew about him.”
His father didn't deny it.
“Yes.”
Nathan's voice shook.
“How many children do I have?”
His father whispered,
“Three.”
The tunnel fell silent.
Nathan looked at Grace.
“You knew Eli was alive?”
Grace nodded.
“I thought he was dead.”
“Who told you?”
“Charles.”
Nathan's face hardened.
“Of course.”
Grace stepped closer.
“But Charles didn't take Eli.”
“Then who did?”
She looked toward Elizabeth.
Elizabeth was backing toward the exit.
Nathan noticed.
“Stop.”
Elizabeth froze.
Nathan walked toward her.
“You know who he is.”
Elizabeth's expression remained cold.
“Yes.”
“Who is Eli's mother?”
She said nothing.
Nathan's voice became sharper.
“Who?”
Elizabeth finally looked at Grace.
“Her.”
Nathan turned.
Grace's face collapsed.
“No.”
Nathan stared at her.
“You're his mother?”
Grace nodded through tears.
“Yes.”
Nathan couldn't speak.
The memories came rushing back.
The cabin.
The photograph.
Grace disappearing.
The hospital records.
The lies.
Everything had been built around one enormous secret.
Nathan looked at Grace.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Grace wiped her face.
“Because Eli wasn't supposed to survive.”
Nathan's expression changed.
“Why?”
“Because he was born before Lily.”
Nathan frowned.
“What difference does that make?”
Grace swallowed.
“Everything.”
She pointed toward the trust documents.
“Eli was the first child named in your grandfather's original succession plan.”
Nathan looked at the documents.
His grandfather had deliberately hidden Eli's existence.
“But why?”
Grace's voice trembled.
“Because if anyone knew about Eli, they would have killed him.”
Nathan looked at the boy.
Six years old.
Standing alone.
Carrying a photograph that had survived years of secrets.
Nathan walked toward him.
Eli didn't move.
Nathan stopped a few feet away.
“Are you afraid of me?”
Eli shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Mommy said you would come back.”
Nathan's eyes filled with tears.
“I should have come sooner.”
Eli looked down.
“You didn't know where I was.”
Nathan knelt.
“No.”
Then he opened his arms.
Eli hesitated.
For one heartbreaking second, Nathan thought the boy might refuse.
Instead, Eli ran forward.
Nathan caught him.
He held his youngest son tightly.
“I've got you.”
Eli buried his face against Nathan's shoulder.
“I knew you would come.”
Across the tunnel, Grace covered her mouth.
Lily stepped closer.
“Is he my brother?”
Nathan looked at her.
“Yes.”
Lily smiled through her tears.
Noah moved beside her.
“Then we have three.”
Nathan nodded.
“Yes.”
Three children.
Three lives stolen by the same conspiracy.
And suddenly, the trust didn't matter anymore.
The money didn't matter.
The company didn't matter.
Nathan only cared about getting his children somewhere safe.
Then Daniel spoke.
“We have to leave.”
Nathan looked at him.
“Why?”
Daniel pointed toward the tunnel entrance.
“Because Charles is coming.”
A distant explosion shook the walls.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Elizabeth smiled faintly.
“You're too late.”
Nathan looked at her.
“What did you do?”
“I didn't do anything.”
She glanced at Eli.
“He did.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
Elizabeth pointed toward the boy.
“Eli is the final authorization.”
Nathan looked at the trust screen.
The system displayed:
THREE HEIRS IDENTIFIED.
Then:
FINAL TRANSFER PENDING.
Nathan's expression changed.
“What happens when it transfers?”
His father answered.
“Every asset your grandfather hid becomes accessible.”
“That's all?”
“No.”
He looked at Nathan.
“Control of Cole Holdings will transfer too.”
Nathan stared.
“And who receives it?”
The screen changed.
Three names appeared.
NOAH COLE — 33.3%
LILY COLE — 33.3%
ELI COLE — 33.4%
Nathan stared.
His grandfather had divided the empire between his three children.
Not him.
Not Charles.
Not the Whitmores.
The children.
Then the system displayed another message.
PARENTAL CUSTODIAN: NATHAN COLE
Nathan looked at Grace.
She smiled weakly.
“He finally chose you.”
Nathan's eyes filled with tears.
Then the tunnel door exploded inward.
Everyone screamed.
Smoke filled the passage.
Armed men rushed inside.
Nathan grabbed Lily.
Daniel pulled Noah behind him.
Grace took Eli.
Nathan's father stood in front of them.
Then Charles Whitmore appeared through the smoke.
He looked calm.
Almost disappointed.
“Nathan.”
Nathan stared at him.
“You took everything from me.”
Charles shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at the three children.
“I took everything from your grandfather.”
Then he raised his weapon.
“And now I'm taking back the only thing he left behind.”
Nathan stepped in front of his children.
“You'll have to get through me.”
Charles smiled.
“That was always the plan.”
Before Charles could fire, Victoria stepped between them.
“Dad.”
Charles stopped.
Victoria was shaking.
But she didn't move.
“You're not killing him.”
Charles stared at his daughter.
“Move.”
“No.”
“Victoria.”
She shook her head.
“You lied to me for fourteen years.”
Charles lowered his weapon slightly.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand everything now.”
She turned toward Nathan.
Then toward Noah.
“I let you believe my son was dead.”
She looked at Lily.
“I let them hide your daughter.”
Then she looked at Eli.
“And I helped them erase him.”
Victoria wiped her tears.
“But I'm done.”
Charles's face hardened.
“You'll regret this.”
Victoria smiled sadly.
“I already do.”
She stepped aside.
Then Daniel raised his gun.
“Drop yours, Charles.”
Charles looked around.
His men were surrounded.
Nathan's father had activated the emergency security system.
Police sirens could be heard outside.
Charles slowly lowered his weapon.
But before he could surrender, Elizabeth suddenly grabbed the blue folder.
She ran.
Nathan shouted,
“Stop her!”
Elizabeth disappeared into the smoke.
Nathan chased her.
He reached the end of the tunnel just in time to see her climb into a waiting car.
The vehicle sped away.
Nathan stopped.
Daniel ran up behind him.
“She has the original trust.”
Nathan looked at the car disappearing into the darkness.
Then his phone buzzed.
One new message.
From an unknown number.
YOU SAVED THE CHILDREN.
A second message appeared.
BUT YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHO THEIR REAL GRANDFATHER IS.
Nathan's blood ran cold.
Then a final photograph appeared.
It showed Nathan's grandfather standing beside a woman Nathan had never seen.
In her arms was a newborn baby.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date.
Twenty-seven years ago.
And beneath it were six words:
YOUR GRANDFATHER HAD ANOTHER FAMILY.
Nathan stared at the photograph.
May you like
The story wasn't over.
It had only opened another door.
