CHAPTER 15 — THE FOURTH CHILD

For several seconds, Nathan heard nothing but the ringing phone.
One ring.
Two.
Three.
Then silence.
Eleanor stood beneath the chapel's fading lights, her face drained of color.
Nathan stared at her.
“Victoria?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I'm sorry.”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
His voice was barely more than a whisper.
“You said there were three.”
“I was wrong.”
“You said the three of us were the heirs.”
“We were.”
“You said Lily was the override.”
“She is.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“Then what is Victoria?”
Eleanor looked at Grace.
Then at the children.
Then at the three brothers.
Finally, she whispered:
“The fourth child.”
Grace's face went white.
“Victoria is your daughter?”
Eleanor nodded.
Nathan stared at her.
“Who is her father?”
Eleanor hesitated.
“That is the part I was afraid to tell you.”
Nathan's jaw tightened.
“Tell me.”
“Victoria's father was Richard.”
Silence.
Nathan's mind raced.
“Richard's daughter?”
“Yes.”
“But how?”
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
“Because Richard wasn't always your enemy.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“He kidnapped my children.”
“He did.”
“He destroyed my life.”
“He did.”
“He killed people.”
“Yes.”
“Then why are you protecting him?”
“I'm not.”
Eleanor stepped closer.
“I'm telling you the truth.”
She looked toward the chapel doors.
“Richard was once my closest ally.”
Nathan froze.
“He helped me escape.”
“From whom?”
“From Marcus.”
Nathan's expression changed.
Eleanor continued.
“Marcus wanted all four children.”
“He believed four bloodlines would give him absolute control over the trust.”
“Richard helped me hide Victoria.”
“Then why did he turn against you?”
“Because he discovered what Victoria could do.”
Nathan frowned.
“She was an heir.”
“No.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“She was something much more dangerous.”
Nathan looked toward Grace.
“What?”
Eleanor whispered:
“Victoria was the only child capable of overriding the entire bloodline.”
Nathan froze.
Lily was the override.
Noah carried the shutdown sequence.
The three brothers carried the succession.
But Victoria—
Victoria could control all of it.
Eleanor continued:
“Your children were pieces of the system.”
“Victoria was the master key.”
Nathan stared.
“That is why Richard wanted her.”
“Yes.”
“And why he became obsessed with the trust.”
“Yes.”
Nathan looked at the chapel doors.
“Where is she now?”
Eleanor's face changed.
“Richard has her.”
Nathan's blood ran cold.
“He took Victoria too?”
“No.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“Victoria went willingly.”
Grace stepped forward.
“Why?”
“Because Richard told her the truth.”
“What truth?”
“That Nathan planned to destroy her.”
Nathan stared.
“I never even knew she existed.”
“I know.”
“Then how could she believe that?”
Eleanor looked away.
“Because Richard raised her to fear you.”
The phone rang again.
This time, Nathan answered.
“Who is this?”
A woman's voice came through.
Victoria.
“Nathan.”
He froze.
“Victoria.”
“I know everything.”
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Is Noah with you?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Nathan's heart stopped.
“Is Lily there?”
“Yes.”
Grace grabbed the phone.
“Victoria, please.”
Victoria's voice trembled.
“Grace?”
“Yes.”
“I'm sorry.”
“Bring them home.”
“I want to.”
“Then do it.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
Victoria began crying.
“Because if I leave, he'll kill them.”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“Richard?”
“Yes.”
“Put him on.”
“No.”
“Victoria.”
“I can't.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“Listen to me.”
Silence.
“I know you were lied to.”
Victoria said nothing.
“I know you were manipulated.”
Still silence.
“But the children aren't responsible for any of this.”
“I know.”
“Then help me save them.”
Victoria's voice broke.
“I don't know how.”
Nathan answered:
“Yes, you do.”
“How?”
“Tell me where Richard keeps the Black Ledger.”
Victoria inhaled sharply.
“You know about it.”
“Yes.”
“Then you know what happens if it is destroyed.”
“It already is.”
“What?”
“Noah activated the purge.”
Victoria was silent.
Then she whispered:
“That means…”
“Everything is gone.”
“No.”
Nathan frowned.
“What's wrong?”
Victoria began to cry harder.
“The Ledger wasn't the real system.”
Nathan froze.
“What?”
“The Ledger was only the database.”
“Then what is the real system?”
Victoria whispered:
“The people.”
Nathan felt a chill.
“What people?”
“Everyone who signed.”
“Everyone who benefited.”
“Everyone who knew.”
“Hundreds of them.”
“And they all have access to the final trust.”
Nathan's blood ran cold.
“So destroying the Ledger changes nothing.”
“Exactly.”
Victoria's voice became quiet.
“Because the final trust isn't stored digitally.”
“Where is it?”
“In a person.”
Nathan froze.
“Who?”
Victoria whispered:
“Me.”
The call ended.
Nathan stared at the phone.
Grace looked at him.
“What did she mean?”
Nathan turned toward Eleanor.
“You knew.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Victoria carries the final authorization.”
“Biological?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you tell me Lily was the override?”
“Because Lily opens the trust.”
“And Victoria?”
“Victoria controls what happens after it opens.”
Nathan understood.
Lily was the door.
Victoria was the key.
Noah was the destroyer.
And the three brothers were the succession.
The entire system had been designed around four children.
Four pieces.
Four lives stolen before they understood why.
Nathan looked at Grace.
“We need Victoria.”
Grace nodded.
“And we need all four children together.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“No.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because that's exactly what Marcus wants.”
Nathan froze.
“Marcus.”
Eleanor nodded.
“He's been waiting twenty-four years for all four children to be reunited.”
“Why?”
“Because the trust has one final clause.”
Nathan stared.
“What clause?”
“If all four descendants stand together…”
Eleanor's voice dropped.
“…the original owner returns.”
Nathan frowned.
“Original owner?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“Your grandmother.”
Nathan's eyes widened.
“She controls it?”
“No.”
Eleanor whispered:
“She owns it.”
The mansion was surrounded before sunrise.
Black vehicles.
Armed men.
No sirens.
No uniforms.
Nathan looked through the window.
“How many?”
Daniel counted.
“At least twenty.”
Samuel checked his weapon.
“Private security?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Worse.”
“What?”
“Black Ledger enforcement.”
Nathan turned.
“Then we're outnumbered.”
Daniel smiled.
“Not anymore.”
He opened a hidden compartment.
Inside were dozens of old documents.
“What are those?”
“Names.”
“Whose?”
“Every Black Ledger member who ever worked for Richard.”
Nathan looked at him.
“You kept these?”
“I knew this day would come.”
Daniel handed the documents to Grace.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Send copies to every news outlet.”
Nathan looked at him.
“If you do that, the people outside will panic.”
Daniel nodded.
“That's the point.”
Nathan took the files.
“Do it.”
Within ten minutes, the world changed.
News alerts exploded across every phone.
Government officials were implicated.
Bank executives were exposed.
Police commanders were named.
Corporate leaders were connected to secret payments.
The Black Ledger wasn't a rumor anymore.
It was public.
The empire began collapsing in real time.
Stock markets plunged.
Banks froze accounts.
Executives resigned.
Police departments opened investigations.
And then—
the first Black Ledger member turned himself in.
Then another.
Then another.
Daniel watched the screens.
“They're breaking.”
Nathan nodded.
“But Richard isn't.”
“He won't.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked toward the horizon.
“Because he still has Noah.”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“Then we take him back.”
The location Victoria finally gave them was an abandoned hotel.
The building stood on the edge of the city.
Windows shattered.
Walls covered in snow.
No lights.
Nathan entered with Daniel and Samuel.
Grace remained outside with Eleanor and Lily.
Noah's voice echoed through the hall.
“Daddy!”
Nathan ran.
He found Noah in a room.
The door was open.
The child was alone.
Nathan grabbed him.
“Are you hurt?”
Noah shook his head.
“Where's Victoria?”
“She left.”
“Where?”
“She said she had to do something.”
Nathan's heart tightened.
“What?”
Noah pointed toward the ceiling.
“She went upstairs.”
Nathan looked up.
A gunshot exploded.
Then another.
Nathan ran.
He reached the roof.
Victoria stood at the edge.
Richard was behind her.
He held a gun against her back.
Nathan raised his weapon.
“Richard.”
Richard smiled.
“Put it down.”
Nathan didn't move.
“Let her go.”
“You still think this is about her.”
“Then what?”
Richard looked toward Noah.
“The boy.”
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
“Noah?”
“He carries the shutdown sequence.”
“Yes.”
Richard smiled.
“But he doesn't know how to use it.”
Nathan froze.
Richard continued:
“I do.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“What did you do?”
Richard laughed.
“I taught him.”
Daniel's expression changed.
Nathan stared.
“What?”
Richard pointed toward Noah.
“He thinks he destroyed the Black Ledger.”
“But he didn't.”
“He activated it.”
Nathan's blood ran cold.
“What did he activate?”
Richard smiled.
“The purge.”
“And?”
“The purge doesn't destroy the Ledger.”
“It transfers it.”
“To whom?”
Richard looked at Victoria.
“To the person carrying the final authorization.”
Nathan stared.
“Victoria.”
Richard nodded.
“Exactly.”
Victoria's face filled with horror.
“What did you do?”
Richard smiled.
“I made you the owner.”
Nathan understood.
Richard had manipulated Noah into activating the system.
The entire Black Ledger had been transferred into Victoria.
The girl he had spent years hating.
The woman he had believed was trying to destroy his family.
She now controlled the entire organization.
Richard pointed his weapon at her.
“Open the trust.”
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
“Open it.”
“No.”
Richard raised the gun.
Nathan stepped forward.
“Richard.”
Richard fired.
Nathan moved.
The bullet struck the wall.
Daniel tackled Richard.
Samuel pulled Victoria away.
Nathan grabbed Noah.
Chaos erupted.
Richard fought like a cornered animal.
Daniel pinned him.
Samuel secured his hands.
Victoria collapsed against the wall.
Grace ran onto the roof.
“Are they okay?”
Nathan nodded.
Then he noticed something.
Victoria was staring at her hands.
“What is it?”
She looked up.
“The Ledger.”
Nathan frowned.
“What about it?”
“I can hear them.”
“Who?”
“Everyone.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Every person connected to the system.”
Nathan stared.
Victoria continued.
“I can access their accounts.”
“Their files.”
“Their secrets.”
“Their money.”
“Their identities.”
She looked terrified.
“I can control all of it.”
Nathan understood.
Richard had created the weapon he could never control.
Victoria.
The fourth child.
The master key.
Richard was arrested before sunrise.
For the first time in decades, he had no lawyers.
No politicians.
No police officers.
No money.
No escape route.
But as officers dragged him away, he laughed.
Nathan stopped.
“What is funny?”
Richard looked at him.
“You think you won.”
Nathan said nothing.
Richard smiled.
“Look at your mother.”
Nathan turned.
Eleanor stood beside Thomas.
Thomas was still weak from the gunshot.
Richard continued:
“You haven't asked the most important question.”
Nathan stared.
“What?”
“Why did Eleanor hide the fourth child?”
Nathan looked at his mother.
She closed her eyes.
Richard laughed.
“Ask her who Victoria's real father is.”
Nathan froze.
“I told you.”
“Richard.”
Richard shook his head.
“You believed her?”
He smiled.
“That's adorable.”
Nathan turned toward Eleanor.
“Mom.”
Eleanor couldn't meet his eyes.
“Who is Victoria's father?”
Silence.
Nathan's voice became harder.
“Tell me.”
Eleanor finally whispered:
“Not Richard.”
Nathan's heart stopped.
Richard laughed.
“I told you.”
Nathan stared at his mother.
“Then who?”
Eleanor looked toward Victoria.
Victoria stood frozen.
Eleanor whispered:
“Marcus.”
Silence.
Victoria's face collapsed.
“That's impossible.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Marcus is your biological father.”
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
Richard smiled.
“And now you understand why I protected her.”
Nathan stared.
Richard continued:
“Victoria isn't merely the master key.”
“She is the only person who can inherit Marcus's entire empire.”
Nathan's blood ran cold.
“What empire?”
Richard laughed.
“The Black Ledger was only the beginning.”
He leaned closer.
“Marcus owns the network behind it.”
Nathan looked at Victoria.
Her face had gone white.
Richard continued:
“Banks.”
“Private armies.”
“Political organizations.”
“Offshore companies.”
“Everything.”
Nathan stared.
“And Victoria inherits all of it.”
Richard smiled.
“Unless Marcus is still alive.”
Silence.
Nathan looked toward the horizon.
“Where is he?”
Richard's smile widened.
“Closer than you think.”
A helicopter appeared above the hotel.
Its searchlight swept across the roof.
The door opened.
A man stepped out.
Marcus.
Alive.
Calm.
Untouched.
He looked directly at Victoria.
“My daughter.”
Victoria stared at him.
“You lied to me.”
Marcus smiled.
“I protected you.”
“You murdered people.”
“For you.”
“You destroyed families.”
“For you.”
“You took Noah.”
“For you.”
Victoria shook her head.
“I don't want your empire.”
Marcus smiled.
“You don't have a choice.”
Nathan stepped in front of her.
“She does.”
Marcus looked at Nathan.
“You.”
Nathan raised his weapon.
Marcus laughed.
“You still think a gun can change history.”
Nathan answered:
“No.”
He looked at his brothers.
At Grace.
At Lily.
At Noah.
At Victoria.
“It can't.”
“But family can.”
Marcus's expression changed.
For the first time—
he looked afraid.
Because behind Nathan stood three brothers who had spent their entire lives separated.
And beside them stood the four children who had been designed to control the empire.
The system was no longer under Marcus's control.
It belonged to them.
Marcus slowly lowered his weapon.
“You don't understand what you're holding.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“Yes, I do.”
She raised her hand.
Every phone on the roof suddenly lit up.
Every screen displayed the same message.
BLACK LEDGER: ACCESS TRANSFERRED.
Marcus stared.
“No.”
Victoria looked directly at him.
“You taught me how to inherit your empire.”
She closed her fist.
“And now I'm going to dismantle it.”
Marcus's face twisted with rage.
“You wouldn't.”
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
“I will.”
She pressed one final command.
Across the world, accounts froze.
Private networks collapsed.
Secret files opened.
Hidden identities became public.
The Black Ledger began destroying itself.
Nathan looked at Victoria.
“What did you do?”
She whispered:
“I ended it.”
Then she looked toward Eleanor.
“Now tell me the last truth.”
Eleanor stared at her.
“What?”
Victoria's voice trembled.
“Why did you really give me to Richard?”
Eleanor's face crumbled.
She whispered:
“Because you were never supposed to survive.”
Victoria froze.
Nathan turned.
Grace stared.
Eleanor continued:
“Marcus ordered your death.”
“He believed a daughter could never inherit.”
“So I made Richard take you.”
“I thought he would protect you.”
Victoria began crying.
“He did.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Until he realized what you could become.”
Victoria looked at Richard.
Richard said nothing.
Nathan suddenly noticed something on Marcus's wrist.
A familiar silver crescent.
The same symbol Lily carried.
Nathan's blood ran cold.
“Marcus.”
Marcus looked at him.
“That bracelet.”
Marcus smiled.
“Yes.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“Where did you get it?”
Marcus looked toward Lily.
“From her mother.”
Grace froze.
“What?”
Marcus smiled.
“The bracelet belonged to Eleanor.”
Nathan's eyes widened.
Eleanor whispered:
“No.”
Marcus laughed.
“You still haven't told them.”
“Told us what?”
Marcus looked directly at Nathan.
“The children weren't the first experiment.”
Nathan's face changed.
“What experiment?”
Marcus answered:
“There was another child before the four of them.”
Silence.
“Who?”
Marcus smiled.
“Your mother.”
Nathan stared.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Marcus continued:
“She was the original heir.”
Nathan's heart stopped.
Eleanor wasn't merely the mother of the heirs.
She had once been the key herself.
And suddenly the entire story made sense.
The trust.
The Ledger.
The children.
The betrayals.
Everything had begun with Eleanor.
But before Nathan could ask another question—
a gunshot rang out.
Marcus staggered.
Everyone turned.
Richard was holding the weapon.
He had broken free.
Marcus fell to his knees.
Richard looked at Nathan.
“Now…”
He smiled.
“…we can finally finish what we started twenty-four years ago.”
Then he raised the gun toward Eleanor.
Nathan lunged.
But the second shot had already been fired.
Eleanor collapsed.
Grace screamed.
Nathan caught her.
Blood spread across her white shirt.
Eleanor looked into Nathan's eyes.
“Don't…”
Nathan held her tightly.
“Mom.”
Her voice was fading.
“Protect…”
She looked toward Lily.
“…all of them.”
Her eyes closed.
Nathan screamed her name.
And behind him, Victoria whispered:
“I know who killed my father.”
Nathan looked up.
Victoria was staring at Richard.
Her face had changed completely.
Cold.
Determined.
“No more running.”
She raised the phone.
“It's time to expose the last secret.”
Nathan looked at her.
“What secret?”
Victoria looked toward the dying Eleanor.
“The identity of the person who ordered the first murder.”
Then she pressed play.
A recording filled the roof.
A voice from twenty-four years ago.
A voice everyone recognized.
Richard.
“Kill Eleanor.”
Nathan froze.
But then another voice followed.
A woman's voice.
Older.
Calm.
Powerful.
The voice gave the final order.
“Do it.”
Nathan's face went pale.
He knew that voice.
Everyone did.
It belonged to—
Grace's mother.
The woman they thought had died.
The woman who had been missing for decades.
And the recording ended with four words:
“The fourth child survives.”
Nathan stared into the darkness.
Because the woman who had started everything—
May you like
was still alive.
And she was coming for Victoria.
