CHAPTER 13 — THE MOTHER IN THE VIDEO

For a long moment, nobody moved.

The final message remained on the screen.

ONE HOUR.

BRING ALL THREE SONS.

OR NOAH DIES.

Nathan stared at it until the letters blurred.

Then he turned toward Thomas.

“You knew.”

Thomas said nothing.

“You knew my mother was alive.”

Still nothing.

Nathan stepped closer.

“You knew she was alive, and you let me believe she died.”

Thomas finally looked at him.

“I thought she was dead.”

“You just told me you weren't my biological father.”

Thomas's face tightened.

“I said I wasn't.”

“Then who is?”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“I don't know.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“You don't know?”

“I know who your biological father was.”

“Was?”

Thomas looked toward the screen.

“Adrian Vale.”

Silence.

Nathan's eyes shifted toward the monitor.

The man controlling the Black Ledger.

The man demanding all three sons.

The man who claimed to know everything about Eleanor.

Adrian Vale.

Nathan whispered:

“So the three of us are his sons.”

Thomas nodded.

“But he isn't the one who raised you.”

“Why?”

“Because Eleanor made sure he couldn't.”

Grace stared at Thomas.

“Why would she hide his children?”

Thomas looked at her.

“Because Adrian wasn't always the man you see now.”

Nathan frowned.

“What happened to him?”

Thomas took a breath.

“He loved your mother.”

Grace froze.

Nathan's expression changed.

“And she loved him.”

Thomas nodded.

“But the families wouldn't allow it.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian belonged to the Vale family.”

“And the Vales?”

“Controlled the Black Ledger.”

Nathan looked at the servers surrounding them.

“The Ledger began with him?”

“No.”

Thomas shook his head.

“It began with his father.”

Adrian's father.

Nathan suddenly understood.

The Black Ledger wasn't merely an organization.

It was an inheritance.

Passed from father to son.

Generation after generation.

Thomas continued.

“Adrian wanted to destroy it.”

“But failed.”

“He was forced to become its leader.”

Nathan stared.

“And Eleanor?”

“She discovered what he was trying to do.”

“She helped him.”

Thomas nodded.

“They planned to expose everyone.”

“Then why did everything fall apart?”

Thomas's voice became quiet.

“Because Richard betrayed them.”

Nathan clenched his fists.

“Richard betrayed Adrian?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Power.”

Thomas looked at the screen.

“Richard wanted the Miller trust.”

“He wanted the Black Ledger.”

“And he wanted Eleanor.”

Nathan's expression darkened.

“What did he do?”

“He created a war between the families.”

“And blamed Adrian.”

Nathan stared.

“So my mother disappeared because of Richard.”

“Yes.”

“And my brothers?”

Thomas nodded.

“Richard separated you three before anyone could discover the truth.”

Nathan looked at Samuel.

“You were taken by Evelyn.”

Samuel nodded.

“Adrian was taken by the Ledger.”

Nathan turned toward Adrian.

“And I was taken by Richard.”

Adrian's voice was cold.

“Yes.”

Nathan stared at him.

“Then why are you here?”

Adrian looked directly at him.

“Because I came back for my brothers.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“Why now?”

Adrian hesitated.

“Because Noah was taken.”

Nathan's expression hardened.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“You knew they were targeting my children?”

“I knew they would eventually.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I tried to stop them.”

“How?”

Adrian looked at Nathan.

“By becoming the person they feared.”

Nathan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small photograph.

Eleanor.

Standing beside three newborn babies.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

My three sons will destroy the system that tried to destroy them.

Nathan stared.

His mother's handwriting.

Grace stepped closer.

“She knew.”

Adrian nodded.

“She planned everything.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Then why didn't she come back?”

Adrian's expression changed.

“Because she couldn't.”

“Why?”

“She's being held.”

“By whom?”

Adrian looked at the screen.

“Richard.”

Nathan's blood ran cold.

“But Richard is working with the Ledger.”

“No.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Richard is working against them.”

Nathan stared.

“Then why does Adrian Vale control everything?”

Adrian smiled without humor.

“Because he doesn't.”

Everyone turned.

Adrian pointed toward the screen.

“That isn't Adrian Vale.”

Nathan froze.

“What?”

“The man on the screen is an impostor.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“Then who is he?”

Adrian answered:

“Richard.”

Silence.

Nathan looked back at the screen.

The face of Adrian Vale.

The voice.

The threat.

The entire performance.

A fake.

Richard had been pretending to be Adrian.

But why?

Adrian continued.

“Richard stole my identity twenty years ago.”

Nathan's mind raced.

“So the man we saw…”

“Was Richard.”

“And the real Adrian?”

Adrian looked at him.

“You're looking at him.”

Nathan stared.

The man standing beside him.

His own face.

His own blood.

His own brother.

“No.”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

Nathan's voice dropped.

“Then you're not my brother.”

Adrian's eyes darkened.

“I am.”

Nathan shook his head.

“But you said your name was Adrian Miller.”

“It is.”

“Then who is Adrian Vale?”

Adrian looked at Thomas.

Thomas whispered:

“His mother.”

Grace's eyes widened.

“Adrian Vale was a woman?”

Thomas nodded.

“Your grandmother.”

Nathan froze.

The entire room went silent.

The supposed mastermind wasn't a man.

Adrian Vale was Eleanor's mother.

Nathan's grandmother.

And Richard had stolen her identity.

Nathan looked at Adrian.

“Then who are you?”

Adrian answered:

“My real name is Daniel Miller.”

Nathan stared.

Samuel stepped backward.

“Daniel?”

The name hit him.

Daniel.

The third name in the original birth registry.

The name Richard had erased.

The name Thomas had buried.

The third brother.

Not Adrian.

Not Samuel.

Daniel.

Three brothers.

Nathan.

Samuel.

Daniel.

And one woman whose identity had been stolen.

The clock continued ticking.

Thirty-six minutes remained.

Nathan looked at the screen.

“We need Noah.”

Daniel nodded.

“Then we move.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“I know where Richard is.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Where?”

“The old Cole observatory.”

Grace frowned.

“The observatory?”

“It connects to the underground tunnels.”

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“Can you access them?”

Daniel nodded.

“I built half the security system.”

Nathan stared.

“You built it?”

“I used to work for Richard.”

Nathan's expression hardened.

Daniel looked away.

“I didn't know who he was.”

“Until when?”

“Until I discovered the children.”

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

“And you kept quiet.”

“I was afraid.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“So was Grace.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

Grace looked at him.

“Then help us.”

Daniel raised his eyes.

“I will.”

They reached the observatory in twenty minutes.

The building stood alone on a frozen hill.

No lights.

No guards.

Too quiet.

Nathan immediately knew it was a trap.

He entered anyway.

Inside, the walls were covered with old photographs.

Nathan stopped.

Every photograph showed his family.

His childhood.

His mother.

Thomas.

Richard.

And the three babies.

Someone had been watching them for decades.

Grace whispered:

“This is sick.”

Nathan walked toward a photograph of himself at age six.

Behind the picture was a date.

THE DAY HE WAS CHOSEN.

Nathan's blood ran cold.

“Chosen for what?”

Daniel examined another photograph.

“Control.”

Nathan looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel pointed to a file.

SUCCESSOR PROGRAM.

Inside were three names.

Nathan.

Samuel.

Daniel.

Each had a different designation.

Nathan:

PUBLIC HEIR.

Samuel:

SHADOW HEIR.

Daniel:

CONTROL HEIR.

Nathan stared.

“What does control heir mean?”

Daniel's face tightened.

“It means one of us was trained to take over the Black Ledger.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Who?”

Daniel said nothing.

Samuel stared at Daniel.

“You.”

Daniel nodded.

“I was raised inside it.”

Nathan understood.

Daniel wasn't simply a missing brother.

He was the heir to the organization.

The weapon Richard had feared.

The brother who had been trained to control everything.

Then a child's voice came through the speakers.

“Daddy?”

Nathan's heart stopped.

“Noah.”

The sound came again.

“Daddy!”

Nathan ran toward the control room.

The screen activated.

Noah appeared.

He was sitting in a chair.

His hands were tied.

Lily sat beside him.

Grace screamed.

“Lily!”

A man's voice filled the room.

“You have twenty minutes.”

Nathan looked around.

“Richard!”

A laugh echoed.

“Bring the three brothers.”

Nathan shouted:

“Show yourself!”

A door opened.

Richard walked into the room.

Nathan froze.

His father looked older.

But alive.

Richard smiled.

“You finally found me.”

Nathan raised his gun.

Richard looked at the children.

“Shoot me.”

Nathan froze.

“You won't.”

Richard smiled.

“Because you need me.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother is alive.”

Nathan's breathing stopped.

Richard pointed toward a second screen.

Eleanor appeared.

Her face was bruised.

But her eyes were clear.

“Nathan.”

He stepped closer.

“Mom?”

Eleanor began crying.

“My son.”

Nathan's eyes filled.

“I thought you were dead.”

“I wanted you to believe that.”

“Why?”

“To keep you alive.”

Nathan shook his head.

“Who hurt you?”

Eleanor looked toward Richard.

“He did.”

Richard smiled.

“She still blames me.”

Nathan stared at him.

“You killed her.”

“No.”

Richard's voice became cold.

“I saved her.”

Nathan froze.

“From Adrian.”

Eleanor suddenly shouted:

“Don't listen to him!”

Richard laughed.

“You see?”

He pointed at her.

“She still thinks she can control you.”

Nathan looked at his mother.

“Tell me the truth.”

Eleanor swallowed.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because if I tell you…”

She looked at Noah.

“They will kill him.”

Nathan froze.

“Who?”

Eleanor whispered:

“The people behind Richard.”

Nathan looked at Richard.

Richard smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Nathan lowered his weapon.

“What do you want?”

Richard answered:

“The final trust.”

“You'll never get it.”

“I don't need to.”

Richard pointed at Daniel.

“He does.”

Daniel's face went pale.

Nathan turned.

“What?”

Richard laughed.

“Your third brother was trained to open it.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Richard stepped closer.

“You know the code.”

Daniel stared at him.

“I destroyed it.”

“You memorized it.”

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“Can you open the trust?”

Daniel whispered:

“Yes.”

Richard smiled.

“Then we're almost finished.”

Suddenly, the observatory doors exploded inward.

Gunfire erupted.

Richard disappeared behind a wall.

Daniel dragged Nathan down.

Grace pulled the children away.

Samuel fired toward the attackers.

Chaos consumed the room.

Then Nathan heard a voice behind him.

“Daddy.”

Noah.

Nathan turned.

His son was standing alone.

Lily was gone.

Grace screamed.

“Where's Lily?”

Noah pointed toward the tunnel.

“Grandma took her.”

Nathan froze.

“Which grandma?”

Noah whispered:

“The nice one.”

Nathan's blood turned cold.

“Eleanor?”

Noah shook his head.

“The other one.”

Grace stared.

“My mother?”

Nathan's face changed.

Eleanor's mother.

Adrian Vale.

The woman whose identity Richard had stolen.

The woman everyone believed was dead.

The woman who had created the original trust.

And she had Lily.

Then Daniel found something on the floor.

A small gold key.

Engraved with a single letter.

E.

Nathan picked it up.

Inside was a folded note.

He opened it.

Only one sentence was written.

If you want Lily back, bring the boy to the place where I died.

Nathan stared at the message.

Grace whispered:

“Where did your mother die?”

Nathan looked toward the frozen sea.

“The old Miller chapel.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Why?”

Daniel pointed to the note.

“Because that chapel isn't abandoned.”

Nathan frowned.

“Then what is it?”

Daniel's face went pale.

“The entrance to the original Black Ledger vault.”

They reached the chapel before dawn.

Snow covered the cemetery.

Nathan carried Noah.

Grace held Samuel's hand.

Daniel walked behind them.

Thomas followed silently.

The chapel door opened.

No lock.

No resistance.

Inside, hundreds of candles burned.

At the altar stood an elderly woman.

Her hair was completely white.

Her posture weak.

But her eyes were sharp.

Lily stood beside her.

Grace cried out.

“Lily!”

The woman released the child.

Lily ran into her mother's arms.

Nathan rushed toward them.

He grabbed both children.

Alive.

Safe.

For the moment.

The old woman looked at Nathan.

“You look like your father.”

Nathan stared.

“You're Adrian Vale.”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

Nathan raised his weapon.

“You took my daughter.”

“I protected her.”

“You kidnapped her.”

“I rescued her from Richard.”

Nathan didn't lower the weapon.

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because I can prove everything.”

She pointed toward the altar.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was a steel box.

She removed a document.

“This is the original Miller trust.”

Nathan stepped closer.

The woman continued:

“And this…”

She held up another document.

“…is your father's confession.”

Nathan looked at Thomas.

Thomas closed his eyes.

The old woman spoke quietly.

“Thomas did not betray Eleanor.”

Nathan froze.

“What?”

“He took the blame.”

“Why?”

“To protect the real father of the children.”

Nathan's eyes widened.

“Who?”

The woman looked toward Daniel.

Then Samuel.

Then Nathan.

Finally, she said:

“All three boys have the same father.”

Nathan's heart stopped.

“Adrian Vale?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

The old woman looked at Thomas.

Thomas stepped forward.

His eyes were filled with tears.

“I lied about being your father.”

Nathan stared.

Thomas whispered:

“But I never lied about loving you.”

The chapel doors slammed shut.

A gunshot exploded.

Thomas fell.

Grace screamed.

Nathan caught him.

Blood spread across Thomas's chest.

Richard appeared in the doorway.

“Enough secrets.”

Nathan looked up.

His eyes burned with fury.

Richard smiled.

Then he pointed toward Daniel.

“Now kill your brother.”

Nathan froze.

Richard's voice became cold.

“Because the truth is…”

He smiled.

“…Daniel is the one who murdered Eleanor.”

Thomas gasped.

“No.”

Richard raised his weapon again.

And behind him, another figure stepped from the shadows.

Eleanor.

Alive.

Holding a gun.

She aimed directly at Richard.

“Put it down.”

Richard turned.

For the first time—

fear appeared on his face.

Eleanor's voice trembled.

“You've lied for twenty-four years.”

She raised the gun.

“Now it's over.”

But before she could fire—

Daniel stepped between them.

And Eleanor whispered:

“No…”

Because Daniel had turned the gun toward his own mother.

The chapel fell silent.

And Nathan realized the final betrayal had begun.
