CHAPTER 12 — THREE SONS

The man outside the mansion looked exactly like Nathan.

Not similar.

Not close.

Exactly.

Same eyes.

Same jawline.

Same dark hair.

Even the same small scar beneath his left eyebrow.

Grace stared through the window, unable to breathe.

Samuel stepped backward.

“No.”

Nathan looked at him.

“You know him.”

Samuel's face had gone pale.

“I thought he was dead.”

The stranger smiled.

“That's what they wanted you to believe.”

Evelyn tightened her grip around Lily.

“Everyone stays where they are.”

Nathan raised his weapon.

“Let my daughter go.”

The stranger walked slowly toward the mansion.

“Still thinking like a father.”

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

“Who are you?”

The man smiled.

“You already know.”

“No.”

“You've spent your entire life looking at me.”

Nathan froze.

The stranger stopped beneath the porch light.

“My name is Nathan Miller.”

Silence.

Samuel whispered,

“That's impossible.”

The stranger laughed.

“You were told I was dead.”

Nathan stared.

“Who are you really?”

The man looked toward Thomas.

“Ask him.”

Nathan turned.

Thomas looked devastated.

“There were three boys.”

Grace shook her head.

“No.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Three sons.”

Nathan stared at him.

“You had three children?”

Thomas nodded.

“Triplets.”

The word seemed to echo through the mansion.

Triplets.

Nathan.

Samuel.

And the man outside.

Grace looked at Samuel.

“You're not my brother.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

Then she looked at Nathan.

“And you…”

Nathan's expression hardened.

“I don't know anymore.”

The stranger stepped inside.

Evelyn moved aside.

Lily immediately ran toward Nathan.

“Daddy!”

Nathan caught her.

Noah followed.

Grace wrapped both children in her arms.

The stranger watched them.

His expression softened for the first time.

Then vanished.

“You have no idea what you've inherited.”

Nathan stood.

“What do you want?”

The stranger looked at Thomas.

“What he stole from us.”

Nathan stared.

“The trust?”

“No.”

He pointed toward the children.

“The future.”

Thomas finally told the story.

Twenty-four years earlier, Thomas Miller had discovered something buried inside the family's oldest legal documents.

The Miller estate had been created centuries earlier.

But the original trust wasn't simply designed to preserve wealth.

It was designed to preserve control.

The person who controlled the Miller bloodline could influence every company connected to the trust.

Thomas had three sons.

Nathan.

Samuel.

And the third child.

The firstborn.

His name was Adrian.

Adrian Miller.

But when the triplets were born, something went wrong.

Thomas had enemies.

Richard wanted the trust.

Evelyn wanted the trust.

And an unknown group known as the Black Ledger wanted the trust.

Thomas believed he could protect all three children by separating them.

He was wrong.

Richard took Nathan.

Evelyn took Samuel.

And Adrian was taken by the Black Ledger.

For twenty-four years, each side believed one child had died.

Until now.

Nathan stared at Adrian.

“You're my brother.”

Adrian nodded.

“The oldest.”

Samuel looked at him.

“Why didn't you come back?”

“Because I wasn't allowed to.”

“By whom?”

Adrian looked at Thomas.

“Him.”

Thomas lowered his head.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“You abandoned me.”

“I had no choice.”

“There is always a choice.”

Nathan stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You sound like Mother.”

Nathan froze.

“You remember her?”

Adrian nodded.

“I remember everything.”

“What happened to her?”

Adrian's eyes darkened.

“She tried to save us.”

Nathan's voice became quiet.

“From Richard?”

“From everyone.”

Adrian looked toward the red archive.

“She discovered the Black Ledger.”

Grace whispered,

“What is it?”

Adrian answered:

“A list.”

“What kind of list?”

“Names.”

“Whose names?”

“Everyone who bought power.”

Nathan stared.

“Politicians?”

“Judges.”

“Police.”

“Bankers.”

“CEOs.”

“Anyone who could destroy evidence.”

Grace looked at Lily.

“And children?”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Especially heirs.”

A gunshot shattered the window.

Everyone dropped.

Adrian pulled Nathan behind a pillar.

Evelyn dragged Lily away.

Grace screamed.

“Lily!”

Nathan lunged.

Another bullet struck the wall.

Thomas grabbed a rifle.

“Down!”

The mansion erupted into chaos.

Daniel appeared from the hallway with two security officers.

“Snipers!”

Nathan looked at Adrian.

“How many?”

“Three.”

“Where?”

“North ridge.”

Nathan stared.

“How do you know?”

Adrian smiled faintly.

“I've been hunted my entire life.”

Samuel grabbed a weapon.

“Then let's hunt them.”

The brothers moved together.

For the first time, Nathan felt something strange.

Instinct.

Recognition.

Samuel moved left.

Adrian moved right.

Nathan advanced through the center.

Three brothers.

One bloodline.

One enemy.

The first sniper fired.

Nathan ducked.

Adrian returned fire.

The second sniper moved.

Samuel spotted him.

A shot rang out.

The man disappeared behind the ridge.

Silence.

Then Daniel's radio crackled.

“North ridge secure.”

Nathan lowered his weapon.

He looked at his brothers.

Samuel was bleeding from the arm.

Adrian had a cut across his cheek.

But all three were alive.

Thomas watched them.

Tears filled his eyes.

“My sons.”

Nathan looked at him.

“You don't get to call us that yet.”

Thomas lowered his head.

Nathan turned away.

They moved into the underground bunker beneath the mansion.

The children were safe.

Grace refused to leave them.

Evelyn was restrained.

Thomas sat against the wall.

Richard was gone.

Adrian studied the old documents.

“The final trust is only half of it.”

Nathan frowned.

“What else?”

“The Black Ledger.”

Daniel asked,

“Where is it?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Inside the children's DNA.”

Silence.

Nathan stared.

“What?”

Adrian explained.

“Thomas knew physical records could be stolen.”

“So he created a biological key.”

“Yes.”

“Encoded into us?”

“Yes.”

Nathan shook his head.

“That sounds insane.”

Adrian smiled.

“Your father was a paranoid genius.”

Thomas spoke quietly.

“He didn't create it.”

Everyone turned.

Thomas looked at Nathan.

“Your mother did.”

Nathan froze.

“Eleanor?”

“Yes.”

“She knew about the ledger.”

“She discovered it.”

“And encoded it into us?”

“No.”

Thomas shook his head.

“She hid the key in the birth records.”

Nathan frowned.

“What key?”

Thomas looked at the three brothers.

“Your birth order.”

Nathan understood.

“Firstborn.”

“Second.”

“Third.”

Thomas nodded.

“Each child carries part of the legal sequence.”

Daniel looked at the documents.

“So all three are required.”

“Yes.”

Nathan stared.

“That means nobody can open the trust without all three.”

Adrian nodded.

“Exactly.”

Samuel looked at him.

“Then why did they take Lily?”

Adrian's expression changed.

“Because Lily isn't just a secondary heir.”

Nathan looked at him.

“What is she?”

Adrian answered:

“She is the override.”

Grace froze.

“The override?”

“If the three brothers are separated, the trust remains locked.”

“And Lily?”

“She can unlock it alone.”

Nathan's face hardened.

“Why?”

“Because she's the only child born after the original trust was amended.”

Grace stared.

“Thomas changed it?”

“No.”

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“Someone else did.”

Everyone turned.

Evelyn smiled.

“My mother.”

Nathan's expression hardened.

“Your mother?”

“Victoria's grandmother.”

Evelyn nodded.

“She discovered the original clause.”

“What clause?”

“That if all male heirs died, the next surviving descendant would inherit everything.”

Nathan looked at Lily.

Evelyn continued.

“Lily was supposed to be the last heir.”

Grace pulled Lily closer.

“They wanted her dead.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because a living Lily means the old families lose control.”

Nathan stood.

“And that's why Victoria attacked Grace.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Victoria was ordered to kill Lily.”

Victoria, still being treated for her injuries, suddenly spoke from the doorway.

“I couldn't.”

Everyone turned.

Victoria stepped into the bunker.

Her face was bruised.

Her eyes were red.

Evelyn stared at her.

“You betrayed me.”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Lily.

“I saved her.”

Evelyn raised her weapon.

Nathan immediately stepped between them.

“Don't.”

Victoria looked at Nathan.

“I know where Richard is.”

Nathan froze.

“Where?”

“Under the city.”

Adrian frowned.

“Black Ledger headquarters.”

Victoria nodded.

“Richard took Noah there.”

Grace's face went white.

“My son?”

“Yes.”

“Is he alive?”

Victoria nodded.

“But not for long.”

Nathan's expression hardened.

“Take me there.”

Victoria shook her head.

“You can't go.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard wants you there.”

Nathan stared.

“Then I'll go.”

Victoria whispered,

“He doesn't want to kill you.”

Nathan froze.

“He wants you to kill someone else.”

“Who?”

Victoria looked toward Thomas.

“Your father.”

Silence.

Thomas looked up.

Richard's plan became clear.

He wanted Nathan to choose between his biological father and his children.

He wanted the final heir to commit murder.

If Nathan killed Thomas, the Black Ledger could manipulate the evidence.

Nathan would become a murderer.

The trust would be frozen.

And control would pass to the Trustee.

Nathan looked at Adrian.

“What's the way in?”

Adrian reached into his coat.

He removed a black key.

“This.”

Nathan stared.

“What is it?”

“The key to the Black Ledger.”

“Where did you get it?”

Adrian smiled.

“I stole it from them twenty years ago.”

Samuel looked at him.

“You've had it all this time?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you use it?”

Adrian looked at Nathan.

“Because I was waiting for you.”

The entrance to the Black Ledger headquarters was hidden beneath an abandoned subway station.

Nathan, Grace, Adrian, Samuel, and Daniel entered through a service tunnel.

Victoria stayed behind with Lily.

Noah was still missing.

Nathan's only thought was his son.

They reached a steel door.

Adrian inserted the black key.

The door opened.

Inside was a vast underground facility.

Servers.

Security monitors.

Files.

Thousands of them.

Daniel stared.

“This is bigger than the Cole empire.”

Adrian nodded.

“This is the real empire.”

Nathan looked at the screens.

He saw names.

Judges.

Senators.

Bankers.

Executives.

Police chiefs.

And then—

his own name.

NATHAN MILLER.

Beside it:

STATUS: ACTIVE.

Nathan froze.

Another name.

SAMUEL MILLER — ACTIVE.

Another.

ADRIAN MILLER — ACTIVE.

Then:

LILY MILLER — PRIORITY ONE.

Nathan's blood ran cold.

But the next file was worse.

NOAH MILLER — STATUS: CONTROLLED.

Nathan stepped forward.

“Find him.”

Daniel began searching.

Then a camera feed appeared.

Noah was sitting in a small room.

Alive.

Unharmed.

But someone was standing behind him.

Nathan stared.

Richard.

His father.

Alive.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

As if he could see Nathan.

He smiled.

“Welcome home, son.”

Nathan's fists tightened.

Richard continued:

“You've spent your entire life searching for the truth.”

He placed a hand on Noah's shoulder.

“Now I'm going to give it to you.”

Nathan stepped toward the monitor.

“Let him go.”

Richard laughed.

“You still think this is about money.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“It isn't.”

“What is it about?”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“Your mother.”

Nathan froze.

Richard continued:

“Eleanor didn't die because she knew about the trust.”

“She died because she knew who your real father was.”

Nathan's face went pale.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

“Thomas Miller isn't your biological father.”

Silence.

Nathan stared.

Grace looked at Thomas.

Thomas's face had gone completely white.

Richard smiled.

“Ask Thomas who donated the blood.”

Nathan's heart stopped.

Richard leaned closer.

“The man you call your father…”

A pause.

“…isn't your father.”

Then the screen went black.

Nathan turned toward Thomas.

“What did he mean?”

Thomas didn't answer.

Adrian stared at him.

Samuel looked confused.

Grace whispered:

“Thomas?”

Thomas slowly lowered his head.

“I lied.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“About what?”

Thomas looked at the three brothers.

“I am not your biological father.”

Silence.

Nathan's world collapsed again.

“Then who is?”

Thomas's eyes filled with tears.

“The man who created the Black Ledger.”

Nathan stared.

“Who?”

Thomas whispered:

“Adrian Vale.”

The same name they had feared.

The supposed Trustee.

The man who had controlled Richard.

The man who had hunted the heirs.

Nathan looked at Adrian.

But Adrian wasn't surprised.

He simply closed his eyes.

Because he already knew.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

A voice Nathan had heard once before.

Cold.

Calm.

Ancient.

“Hello, children.”

The lights turned red.

Every screen in the facility activated.

A man's face appeared.

Adrian Vale.

He smiled.

“It's time you learned the truth about your mother.”

Then another screen appeared.

Eleanor Cole.

Alive.

Older.

Sitting in a chair.

Nathan's heart stopped.

His mother looked directly into the camera.

And whispered:

“Nathan… don't trust Thomas.”

The screen went black.

Grace grabbed Nathan's arm.

“Your mother is alive.”

Nathan stared at the darkness.

Then a second message appeared:

ONE HOUR.

BRING ALL THREE SONS.

OR NOAH DIES.

Nathan looked at his brothers.

Three sons.

One father.

One mother.

May you like

One stolen child.

And only one hour to discover which of them had been lying from the beginning.
