Chapter 9 — When the Seven Came for Her

The final bell stopped ringing.

Darkness swallowed the church.

For one second, Chloe heard nothing.

Then—

the sound of footsteps.

Dozens of them.

Outside.

Moving across wet stone.

Slow.

Organized.

Coming closer.

Gabriel raised his weapon.

“Stay down.”

Chloe couldn't see him.

She reached forward.

Her fingers found his sleeve.

“I'm here.”

His hand closed around hers.

“Good.”

Across the church, Clara whispered:

“Don't fire.”

Gabriel's voice was low.

“Why?”

“Because they want us to.”

A beam of light suddenly appeared through the broken windows.

Then another.

Then another.

Seven white beams crossed the darkness.

Seven vehicles had stopped outside.

Seven doors opened.

Seven groups of men stepped into the rain.

Chloe's breathing became shallow.

“They're really here.”

Gabriel squeezed her hand.

“Yes.”

“Who are they?”

“The Seven.”

“No.”

Clara's voice came from the darkness.

“You don't understand.”

“What?”

“They aren't seven men.”

A pause.

“They're seven families.”

Chloe felt cold spread through her body.

Gabriel understood immediately.

“How many?”

Clara whispered:

“More than thirty.”

Gabriel looked toward Salvatore.

“You brought them.”

Salvatore shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Salvatore's eyes moved toward the darkness.

“Your father.”

Gabriel froze.

“What?”

Salvatore continued.

“Your father built The Seven.”

He looked at Gabriel.

“And tonight, they're here to finish what he started.”

A red laser appeared on the church wall.

Then another.

Then six more.

Gabriel pulled Chloe behind the stone altar.

Clara dropped beside them.

Salvatore remained standing.

Gabriel stared at him.

“Get down.”

Salvatore laughed.

“They won't shoot me.”

“Why?”

“Because they need me alive.”

Gabriel looked at Clara.

“And you?”

She shook her head.

“They don't.”

A voice suddenly came through the church speakers.

Calm.

Male.

Old.

“Gabriel Costello.”

Gabriel looked upward.

The voice continued.

“Put your weapon on the floor.”

Gabriel didn't move.

“Release Chloe Bennett.”

Silence.

Then:

“And step away from Salvatore.”

Chloe stared at Gabriel.

“Why do they want me?”

Gabriel whispered:

“I don't know.”

Clara shook her head.

“Yes, you do.”

Gabriel looked at her.

Clara's eyes were fixed on Chloe.

“They don't want you.”

Chloe frowned.

“They want what you carry.”

“What do I carry?”

“The bloodline.”

Gabriel's expression hardened.

“Explain.”

Clara swallowed.

“Your father created The Seven because he believed blood was the only thing that could control the empire.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It does if you know the old rules.”

“What rules?”

Clara looked at Salvatore.

“Only a direct descendant can legally control the original Costello assets.”

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

“My father.”

“Dead.”

“Me.”

“Maybe.”

Gabriel stared at her.

“Maybe?”

Clara nodded.

“If your father left another heir…”

Gabriel looked at Chloe.

“…then you aren't the only one.”

Chloe's heart stopped.

“What are you saying?”

Clara answered:

“Salvatore has been looking for you because you're part of the succession.”

Gabriel looked at Chloe.

“She isn't a Costello.”

Clara shook her head.

“Not officially.”

Gabriel's face darkened.

“But if she's Salvatore's daughter…”

“She is.”

“And Salvatore is a Costello.”

“Yes.”

“Then she has a claim.”

“Yes.”

Chloe stared at them.

“I don't want anything.”

Clara looked at her.

“That doesn't matter.”

A gunshot struck the stone altar.

Everyone ducked.

The voice from the speakers returned.

“Last warning.”

Gabriel stood.

“Who are you?”

Silence.

Then:

“You know my name.”

Gabriel waited.

The voice said:

“Elias Grant.”

Gabriel's face changed.

Clara covered her mouth.

Salvatore smiled.

“Now you remember.”

Gabriel whispered:

“Elias.”

Chloe looked at him.

“Who is Elias?”

“My father's attorney.”

Clara shook her head.

“Not just his attorney.”

Gabriel turned.

“What else?”

“He was one of The Seven.”

Salvatore nodded.

“The first.”

Gabriel's eyes hardened.

“And the man who handled my father's estate.”

“Yes.”

“Then he knows everything.”

“Almost.”

The speaker crackled.

Elias spoke again.

“Your father left instructions.”

Gabriel shouted:

“What instructions?”

“To bring his family together.”

Gabriel laughed bitterly.

“My family is already here.”

“No.”

The voice became colder.

“Your real family.”

Chloe's blood ran cold.

Elias continued:

“Gabriel.”

A pause.

“Clara.”

Another pause.

“Chloe.”

Then:

“And Salvatore.”

Salvatore's smile disappeared.

Elias said:

“You four are the last living people connected to the original agreement.”

Gabriel stared.

“What agreement?”

The answer came.

“The Blood Compact.”

The church doors opened.

Seven men entered.

They wore identical black suits.

No insignia.

No visible weapons.

But each carried the same silver ring.

A circle.

With seven small marks.

The first man stepped forward.

“Gabriel Costello.”

Gabriel raised his weapon.

“Stop.”

The man stopped.

He looked at Chloe.

Then Clara.

Then Salvatore.

“We've been waiting fifteen years.”

Gabriel said:

“For what?”

“For this night.”

Chloe whispered:

“What night?”

The man looked at her.

“The night the heir returns.”

Gabriel stepped in front of her.

“She isn't going anywhere.”

The man looked at him.

“That's not your decision.”

Gabriel's voice became deadly.

“It is now.”

The man smiled.

“You're exactly like your father.”

Gabriel's expression hardened.

“Everybody keeps saying that.”

“They should.”

“Why?”

“Because he died trying to protect the same woman you're protecting.”

Gabriel stopped.

“What woman?”

The man looked at Chloe.

“Her mother.”

Chloe stepped forward.

“You know my mother?”

The man nodded.

“She was the reason the Blood Compact failed.”

“Why?”

“Because she broke the first rule.”

“What rule?”

“She fell in love.”

Chloe froze.

“With Salvatore?”

The man smiled.

“No.”

He looked at Gabriel.

“With your father.”

Gabriel went still.

Chloe's heart pounded.

“My mother loved Gabriel's father?”

“Yes.”

Salvatore's face became furious.

“Enough.”

The man looked at him.

“You've had fifteen years to lie.”

He turned back toward Chloe.

“Tonight, the truth belongs to you.”

Chloe's voice trembled.

“Why did my mother marry him?”

“She didn't.”

The man shook his head.

“Your mother never legally married Gabriel's father.”

Gabriel frowned.

“Then what was their relationship?”

“They made a pact.”

“What pact?”

The man said:

“She agreed to help him destroy The Seven.”

Clara whispered:

“And Salvatore found out.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he kill her?”

The man looked at Clara.

“Because he discovered she was pregnant.”

Chloe's face went pale.

“With me.”

“Yes.”

Salvatore suddenly shouted:

“That's enough!”

He fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

The Seven men immediately raised their weapons.

Gabriel grabbed Chloe.

Clara pulled Salvatore behind a pillar.

Chaos erupted.

Gunfire exploded through the church.

Stone shattered.

Wood splintered.

Glass rained from above.

Gabriel dragged Chloe toward the side aisle.

“Run!”

They moved behind the pews.

Clara followed.

Salvatore disappeared into the smoke.

Vincent's voice came through Gabriel's earpiece.

“I'm outside.”

Gabriel ducked behind a pillar.

“How many?”

“Twenty-two visible.”

“More?”

“Probably.”

“Get Beatrice.”

A pause.

Vincent's voice changed.

“I found her.”

“Where?”

“Underground.”

Gabriel froze.

“She's alive?”

“Yes.”

“Get her out.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“She's refusing.”

Gabriel frowned.

“What?”

Vincent's voice cracked.

“She says she needs to talk to Chloe.”

Gabriel looked at Chloe.

“She can wait.”

“No.”

Vincent sounded desperate.

“She says she knows who killed your father.”

Gabriel's eyes widened.

“Bring her here.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because she's not alone.”

Gabriel's stomach tightened.

“Who is with her?”

Vincent went silent.

“Vincent.”

A breath.

Then:

“Your mother.”

Gabriel froze.

“My mother is with Beatrice?”

“No.”

Vincent's voice became barely audible.

“Beatrice is with your mother.”

Chloe stared at Gabriel.

“What?”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Your mother is alive.”

Chloe's entire body went still.

“No.”

Vincent continued:

“She has been alive for fifteen years.”

Chloe's lips parted.

“Where?”

“Beneath St. Mary's.”

Gabriel looked around the church.

“That's impossible.”

Vincent answered:

“Nothing about tonight is impossible anymore.”

The gunfire suddenly stopped.

Silence.

Smoke floated through the church.

Gabriel looked toward the Seven.

Five men remained standing.

Two were wounded.

But none had left.

Elias's voice came through the speakers.

“Gabriel.”

Gabriel raised his weapon.

“I'm listening.”

“Come to the altar.”

“No.”

“Then Chloe dies.”

A laser appeared on Chloe's chest.

Gabriel's blood froze.

He looked around.

The sniper had found her.

“Gabriel…”

Chloe's voice was quiet.

He turned.

“Don't move.”

She nodded.

Elias spoke.

“She isn't your responsibility.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“She is now.”

“You don't even know who she is.”

Gabriel answered:

“I know enough.”

Elias laughed.

“You know nothing.”

Then the church doors slammed shut.

A deep mechanical sound echoed beneath the floor.

Chloe looked down.

The stone tiles beneath her feet began moving.

Gabriel shouted:

“Chloe!”

The floor opened.

She fell.

Gabriel lunged.

His fingers caught her wrist.

For one second, he held her.

Then something pulled from below.

Hard.

Gabriel lost his grip.

Chloe disappeared into darkness.

“CHLOE!”

Her scream echoed underground.

Gabriel jumped after her.

He landed on a narrow stone platform.

Chloe was ten feet away.

She was lying on the floor.

Alive.

But unconscious.

Gabriel ran toward her.

“Chloe!”

He knelt.

Checked her breathing.

She was alive.

Then he heard a voice behind him.

“Don't touch her.”

Gabriel turned.

A woman stood in the darkness.

Older.

Thin.

Gray hair.

Her face was marked by fifteen years of suffering.

Gabriel's gun rose.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at him.

Then at Chloe.

Tears filled her eyes.

She whispered:

“I'm her mother.”

Gabriel froze.

The woman stepped closer.

She looked at Chloe.

Then at Gabriel.

And finally said:

“I have been waiting fifteen years to tell my daughter the truth.”

Gabriel lowered his weapon slightly.

“Why were you hidden?”

The woman looked behind him.

“Because if Salvatore finds out I'm alive…”

She stopped.

Her eyes filled with fear.

“He'll kill Chloe.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“Then tell me everything.”

The woman shook her head.

“There's no time.”

“Why?”

“Because Salvatore isn't the greatest danger.”

Gabriel stared.

“Then who is?”

The woman looked toward the darkness above them.

“The Seven.”

Gabriel frowned.

“I already know about them.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don't.”

She pointed toward Chloe.

“The Seven aren't trying to control her.”

Gabriel's expression changed.

“What do they want?”

The woman whispered:

“They want her to sign something.”

“What?”

“The original Blood Compact.”

Gabriel looked down at Chloe.

“Why?”

“Because once she signs…”

The woman took a trembling breath.

“…she becomes the legal owner of everything your father left behind.”

Gabriel stared.

“Everything?”

“The ports.”

“The accounts.”

“The companies.”

“The properties.”

“The hidden money.”

“The entire empire.”

Gabriel looked at Chloe.

“But she's not a Costello.”

The woman smiled sadly.

“She doesn't need to be.”

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

“Then why?”

The woman answered:

“Because your father made sure she would be the one person The Seven could never control.”

Gabriel stared.

“What did he do?”

The woman looked directly into his eyes.

“He put the entire empire in her name.”

Gabriel stopped breathing.

“That's impossible.”

“It isn't.”

“How?”

“He knew he was going to die.”

“And he planned all of this?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“Because he knew you would try to stop him.”

Gabriel looked at Chloe.

“And why didn't he tell her?”

The woman's face broke.

“Because she was the only person he wanted to protect from this world.”

A sound echoed above them.

Footsteps.

Someone was coming down the stairs.

The woman looked terrified.

“Too late.”

Gabriel raised his weapon.

“Who?”

The woman's eyes moved toward the staircase.

Then she whispered:

“Salvatore.”

A man's voice echoed through the darkness.

“Hello, Gabriel.”

Salvatore appeared at the top of the stairs.

But he wasn't alone.

Beside him stood Clara.

Her gun was pressed against Salvatore's head.

And Clara was crying.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

“I had no choice.”

Salvatore smiled.

Then looked down at Chloe.

“My daughter.”

May you like

He took one step down.

And Clara pulled the trigger.
