Chapter 14 — The Voice Behind the Wall

The knocking stopped.

Three knocks.

A pause.

Two more.

The childhood signal.

Chloe stood frozen in the underground tunnel, staring at the stone wall.

Her heart was beating so hard it hurt.

Behind her, a man lay bleeding on the floor.

Evelyn was trembling.

Vincent had his gun raised.

Gabriel was watching every shadow.

And Beatrice was gripping Chloe's wrist with both hands.

THAT IS NOT LEO.

Chloe looked at her grandmother.

Her eyes were wet.

“How do you know?”

Beatrice signed one word.

BECAUSE.

She pointed toward the wall.

Then toward Chloe's heart.

Then shook her head.

Chloe understood the message but not the meaning.

“You're saying he isn't Leo.”

Beatrice nodded.

“Then who is he?”

Beatrice didn't answer.

The stranger who had claimed to be Evelyn's son suddenly groaned.

Everyone turned.

Blood was spreading beneath him.

Vincent kicked the man's weapon away.

“Don't move.”

The man laughed weakly.

“You're too late.”

Gabriel crouched beside him.

“Where is Leo?”

The stranger smiled.

“You keep asking the wrong question.”

Gabriel grabbed his collar.

“Where is he?”

The man looked directly at Chloe.

“Your brother isn't the only person they've kept alive.”

Chloe's blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?”

The stranger coughed.

“Ask your grandmother.”

Beatrice's expression hardened.

Gabriel looked at her.

“Mother?”

Beatrice closed her eyes.

For the first time since Chloe had met her, the old woman looked truly afraid.

Not for herself.

For Chloe.

She raised her hands.

THE MAN BEHIND THE WALL IS NOT LEO.

Chloe whispered,

“Then who is he?”

Beatrice pointed toward Evelyn.

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

Beatrice signed again.

SHE KNOWS.

All eyes turned to Evelyn.

She stood against the stone wall, pale and silent.

Gabriel stepped toward her.

“Talk.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“I can't.”

Gabriel's expression became ice.

“You've lied to us for hours.”

“I was trying to keep Chloe alive.”

“You brought us here.”

“Yes.”

“You told us Leo was alive.”

“Yes.”

“You said you didn't know where he was.”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't.”

“Then who is that?”

She looked at the wounded stranger.

“My son.”

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

“And who is he?”

Evelyn hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Daniel.”

The wounded man smiled.

“Finally.”

Chloe stared.

“Daniel?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Daniel Bennett.”

Chloe felt something strange.

The name sounded familiar.

Not because she knew him.

Because Leo had written it.

Her eyes snapped toward the ledger.

She grabbed it.

Pages turned beneath her shaking fingers.

Daniel Bennett.

There.

Buried among hundreds of names.

D.B. — TRANSFERRED — SUBJECT 07.

Chloe's breathing stopped.

“Subject Seven.”

Gabriel looked over her shoulder.

“What?”

She pointed.

“Daniel was one of the subjects.”

Vincent stepped closer.

“Subject seven?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Chloe.

“He wasn't Subject Seven.”

“Then what?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“He was Subject Zero.”

Silence.

The tunnel seemed to become colder.

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

“What is Subject Zero?”

Evelyn looked toward Beatrice.

Beatrice lowered her head.

Evelyn finally said:

“The first child.”

Chloe stared.

“The first child of what?”

“The succession experiment.”

Gabriel's face changed.

“What experiment?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“The Seven didn't just control money.”

She pointed toward the ledger.

“They controlled bloodlines.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“Explain.”

“They knew the original Costello agreement required a specific bloodline to activate the inheritance.”

Chloe remembered the letter.

Leo was the real heir.

She was the decoy.

Evelyn continued.

“So they started collecting children.”

Chloe felt sick.

“Children?”

“Children born into families connected to the Seven. Children with bloodlines they could manipulate. Children they could erase.”

Gabriel stared at her.

“How many?”

Evelyn looked down.

“Twenty-three.”

Chloe covered her mouth.

Twenty-three children.

Twenty-three lives.

Twenty-three identities erased.

“Why?”

“Because they were searching for the perfect successor.”

Gabriel's voice was low.

“And Leo?”

Evelyn looked at Chloe.

“Leo was the one they finally found.”

A distant explosion shook the tunnel.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Vincent looked toward the staircase.

“They're inside.”

Gabriel ignored him.

“What makes Leo different?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“He wasn't supposed to exist.”

Chloe frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Your mother was supposed to have only one child.”

“Clara?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Clara was the first.”

Chloe's expression hardened.

“And me?”

“You came later.”

“And Leo?”

Evelyn's eyes moved toward the floor.

“Leo came last.”

Chloe felt a strange chill.

“Why was that important?”

“Because Leo inherited something neither you nor Clara had.”

“What?”

Evelyn didn't answer.

Beatrice suddenly began signing.

Fast.

Urgent.

Chloe watched.

Her grandmother's hands formed a sequence Chloe had never seen before.

Not ordinary ASL.

Not the hidden signs Leo had taught her.

Something more complex.

A coded language.

Evelyn watched Beatrice.

Then whispered:

“She remembers.”

Gabriel turned.

“Remembers what?”

Beatrice pointed toward Chloe.

Then touched her own chest.

Then formed a circle with her hands.

Finally, she crossed her fingers.

Chloe understood only one part.

“Blood.”

Beatrice nodded.

Then pointed toward Leo's name in the ledger.

Then toward Gabriel.

Then toward Chloe.

Gabriel's face tightened.

“Mother, what are you saying?”

Beatrice looked at him.

Her hands moved slowly.

Chloe translated.

“She says the Blood Compact isn't activated by one heir.”

Gabriel stared.

“What?”

“She says it requires three.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Gabriel looked at Chloe.

“Three heirs?”

Beatrice nodded.

Chloe's mind raced.

“Who?”

Beatrice raised one finger.

Gabriel.

Second.

Chloe.

Third.

She pointed toward the wall.

Everyone turned.

Three knocks.

A pause.

Two more.

Chloe stepped forward.

“Leo?”

Beatrice shook her head.

She pointed toward the floor.

Then the ceiling.

Then the wall.

Chloe frowned.

“What are you trying to tell me?”

Beatrice finally signed:

THREE BROTHERS.

Gabriel went still.

“Brothers?”

Vincent's face changed.

Evelyn whispered:

“Oh God.”

Gabriel turned toward her.

“Who?”

Evelyn didn't answer.

Gabriel grabbed her shoulders.

“Who?”

She looked directly at him.

“You.”

A beat.

“Vincent.”

Vincent froze.

“And Daniel.”

The wounded man laughed.

Gabriel released Evelyn.

“No.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Three sons.”

Gabriel's face hardened.

“You're saying Daniel is my brother?”

“Yes.”

Vincent looked at Daniel.

His expression was impossible to read.

Gabriel turned toward Beatrice.

“You knew?”

Beatrice didn't deny it.

Gabriel's voice cracked.

“You knew I had another brother?”

Beatrice nodded.

“And Vincent?”

Another nod.

“And Daniel?”

Beatrice closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Gabriel stepped back.

The truth hit him harder than any bullet.

His entire life had been built around the belief that Vincent was the only secret child his father had left behind.

Now there was another.

A third brother.

A brother raised in secrecy.

A brother tied to the Seven.

A brother who knew about Leo.

And possibly knew where Leo was.

Daniel slowly pushed himself upright.

Vincent aimed his gun.

“Don't.”

Daniel laughed.

“Still pointing guns at family.”

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“You aren't family.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You really don't remember?”

Vincent's expression changed.

Daniel touched his own forehead.

“Hospital basement.”

Vincent went pale.

“You.”

Daniel nodded.

“You were there.”

Vincent's gun lowered slightly.

Gabriel looked between them.

“What happened in the hospital?”

Vincent said nothing.

Daniel answered.

“Leo wasn't the boy they were moving.”

Chloe stepped forward.

“Then who was?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Me.”

The tunnel went silent.

Chloe's face drained.

“You were the boy in the hospital?”

Daniel nodded.

“They used my identity.”

He looked at the photograph on the floor.

“The boy you thought was Leo wasn't Leo.”

Chloe shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel's expression softened.

“I'm sorry.”

“No.”

Chloe backed away.

“I saw him.”

“You saw a boy.”

“I knew his face.”

“They changed his records.”

“I touched his hand.”

“They wanted you to.”

“You were there?”

Daniel nodded.

“I was there.”

Chloe's breathing became ragged.

“Where was Leo?”

Daniel looked at Beatrice.

“She knows.”

Chloe turned.

Beatrice's hands began to tremble.

“Grandmother.”

Beatrice looked at her.

“Where is my brother?”

Beatrice slowly signed.

UNDER THE CHURCH.

Gabriel stared.

“St. Mary's?”

Beatrice nodded.

Chloe's heart dropped.

“But we searched that place.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“You searched the crypt.”

“What did we miss?”

“The old baptismal chamber.”

Vincent's eyes widened.

“There is no baptismal chamber.”

“There was.”

Daniel smiled.

“Before the church was abandoned.”

He reached into his coat and pulled out a folded map.

He opened it on the stone floor.

The map showed St. Mary's Church.

Below it was a maze of tunnels.

At the center was a room marked:

BAPTISMAL ARCHIVE.

Chloe stared.

“When was this drawn?”

Daniel answered:

“Three weeks ago.”

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

“By whom?”

Daniel looked at Chloe.

“Leo.”

Chloe's heart stopped.

“Then he's alive.”

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he pointed to the map.

“That's where he was.”

“Was?”

“He isn't there anymore.”

“Where did he go?”

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

“They took him.”

“Who?”

Daniel's face became grim.

“The Seventh.”

Gabriel's expression changed.

“The Seventh?”

Daniel nodded.

“The person Elias has been protecting.”

Vincent stepped forward.

“Who is it?”

Daniel looked at him.

“You already met him.”

“Who?”

Daniel pointed upward.

Toward the house.

Then whispered:

“Your father's killer.”

Gabriel's face went cold.

“You know who killed my father?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Daniel opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, the entire tunnel shook.

A massive explosion tore through the house above them.

The ceiling cracked.

Stone rained down.

Chloe screamed.

Gabriel grabbed her and covered her body.

Vincent pulled Clara behind a support column.

Evelyn dragged Beatrice into a side passage.

The tunnel filled with smoke.

Then a voice came through the darkness.

Calm.

Familiar.

Almost gentle.

“Gabriel.”

Gabriel froze.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it when he was a child.

At his father's funeral.

In courtrooms.

In boardrooms.

In the private rooms where men made decisions that killed other men.

The voice spoke again.

“You've spent your entire life asking the wrong question.”

Gabriel raised his gun.

“Come out.”

A figure appeared through the smoke.

Gray hair.

Black suit.

Silver cane.

Gabriel's eyes widened.

It wasn't Elias.

It wasn't Salvatore.

It wasn't Vincent.

It was the man Gabriel had believed had died fifteen years earlier.

His father.

Gabriel couldn't breathe.

The man smiled.

“Hello, son.”

Chloe stared at the impossible figure.

Vincent lowered his gun.

Beatrice began shaking violently.

Evelyn whispered:

“No.”

Gabriel's hand trembled.

“You're dead.”

The man smiled.

“I was supposed to be.”

Gabriel raised his weapon.

His father didn't move.

“Shoot me.”

Gabriel couldn't.

The man looked at Chloe.

Then at Beatrice.

Then at Daniel.

Finally, he said:

“Now you understand why Leo had to disappear.”

Chloe stepped forward.

“Where is my brother?”

The old man smiled.

“Closer than you think.”

Then he looked toward the wall.

Three knocks.

A pause.

Two more.

Chloe's face went white.

The signal came again.

But this time—

it came from behind her.

She slowly turned.

The stone wall beside her was opening.

A hidden door slid inward.

And standing in the darkness beyond it was a young man.

Thin.

Bruised.

Long-haired.

His eyes filled with tears.

He raised his hands.

His fingers moved.

Slowly.

Precisely.

The first sign was one Chloe knew better than any other.

SISTER.

Chloe stopped breathing.

The young man signed again.

DON'T COME CLOSER.

Then he pointed behind himself.

May you like

His final message made Chloe's blood freeze.

HE IS NOT OUR FATHER.
