Chapter 19 — The Mother Who Smiled

Chloe stared at her mother.
The woman who had spent fifteen years hiding beneath an abandoned church.
The woman who had watched her daughter grow from a distance.
The woman who had allowed Chloe to believe her little brother was dead.
The woman who had just smiled when Leo whispered one word.
MOTHER.
The clock on the wall showed:
11:58 P.M.
Two minutes.
Nobody moved.
Gabriel raised his gun.
“Step away from Chloe.”
Her mother didn't.
She simply looked at Leo.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Leo lifted his hands.
His fingers trembled.
YOU KNEW.
His mother nodded.
Chloe stared at her.
“Knew what?”
Her mother looked at her.
“The door.”
“What about it?”
“It should never be opened.”
Chloe glanced toward the seventh door.
“But you told us to find it.”
“I told you to find the truth.”
“And this is the truth?”
Her mother shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at the darkness beyond the door.
“This is where the truth was buried.”
A low mechanical sound came from inside.
The door opened another inch.
Cold air swept through the chamber.
Chloe heard a man's voice.
“Chloe.”
She froze.
It was unmistakable.
Samuel Bennett.
Her father.
The man who had raised her.
The man she had buried twelve years ago.
The man whose voice she had heard only in old recordings.
“Don't trust her.”
Chloe slowly looked at her mother.
Her mother's smile disappeared.
“That's not your father.”
Chloe's heart pounded.
“Then who is it?”
Her mother whispered:
“The man who killed him.”
Gabriel stepped closer.
“Who?”
She looked at him.
“Elias.”
Everyone froze.
Chloe shook her head.
“No.”
Her mother nodded.
“Yes.”
“But Elias is outside.”
“No.”
She pointed toward the speaker.
“That is a recording.”
Daniel stared at the ceiling.
“Then why does it sound live?”
“Because they recorded it recently.”
Vincent looked toward the equipment.
“Recent?”
Her mother nodded.
“Elias has been using old voices to control people.”
Chloe stared at the darkness.
“So that isn't Samuel.”
“No.”
“Then who is behind the door?”
Her mother looked at Leo.
“He knows.”
Leo's hands moved.
Slowly.
THE MAN WHO RAISED ME.
Chloe's blood went cold.
“What?”
Leo pointed toward himself.
Then toward the darkness.
HE RAISED ME AFTER THE ACCIDENT.
Chloe's mind raced.
“Who?”
Leo looked at her.
Then signed:
SAMUEL.
Chloe stopped breathing.
Her father was supposed to have died twelve years ago.
But Leo was saying Samuel had raised him after his supposed death.
Impossible.
Unless—
Chloe turned toward her mother.
“You said Samuel was dead.”
“He is.”
“Then how did he raise Leo?”
Her mother closed her eyes.
“Because the man who raised you was not Samuel.”
Chloe's face went blank.
“What?”
Her mother stepped forward.
“The man you called Samuel Bennett was actually Rafael Costello.”
Salvatore staggered backward.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Salvatore's face had gone white.
“That's impossible.”
Her mother looked at him.
“You knew Rafael.”
Salvatore shook his head.
“Rafael died.”
“No.”
She pointed toward the seventh door.
“He survived.”
Salvatore whispered:
“You're lying.”
Her mother shook her head.
“I watched him survive.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“Rafael was my father's brother.”
“Yes.”
“And Chloe's real father?”
“No.”
Gabriel stared.
“Then who was?”
Her mother looked at Chloe.
“Rafael was your biological father.”
Chloe's breath caught.
The room seemed to tilt.
Salvatore stared at Chloe.
“No.”
Chloe looked at him.
“You said you were my biological father.”
“I believed I was.”
Her mother interrupted.
“I let you believe it.”
Salvatore looked at her with disbelief.
“Why?”
“Because Rafael was being hunted.”
“And you used me?”
“I used everyone.”
Salvatore's face hardened.
“For fifteen years?”
“For my children.”
Chloe stepped forward.
“Stop.”
Everyone went silent.
She looked at her mother.
“I don't care who my biological father is anymore.”
Her voice shook.
“I care about one thing.”
She pointed toward the seventh door.
“Where is Leo?”
Her mother looked at the door.
“He's there.”
Chloe froze.
“What?”
“Not physically.”
Her mother stepped closer.
“Leo left something there.”
“What?”
“A recording.”
Chloe looked at Leo.
He nodded.
She suddenly understood.
The voice behind the door.
The voice of Samuel.
It wasn't Samuel.
It was Leo.
Leo had recorded the voice.
He had left it there as a trap.
Elias had found the recording.
And had used it against them.
Leo raised his hands.
I WANTED YOU TO COME HERE.
Chloe stared.
“You?”
Leo nodded.
I NEEDED YOU TO KNOW EVERYTHING.
Gabriel stepped closer.
“Why?”
Leo pointed toward the Blood Compact.
Then toward Chloe.
BECAUSE YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN END IT.
The clock changed.
11:59 P.M.
One minute.
Elias's voice suddenly came through the speakers.
“Very touching.”
Everyone turned.
Elias's voice continued.
“You've finally assembled all the pieces.”
Chloe looked toward the cameras.
“Where are you?”
“Watching.”
“Afraid to come inside?”
A pause.
Then Elias laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
“What?”
“You think this ends at midnight.”
Chloe looked at the clock.
“Doesn't it?”
“No.”
Elias's voice became colder.
“Midnight is when it begins.”
The lights flickered.
The Blood Compact on the table began glowing beneath the black seal.
Seven circles.
One line.
Then Chloe's wrist burned.
She cried out.
Gabriel grabbed her.
“What happened?”
The mark on her wrist had changed.
The seven points were glowing red.
Her mother whispered:
“It's activating.”
Chloe stared.
“How do I stop it?”
Her mother looked at Leo.
Leo shook his head.
Then signed:
DON'T SIGN.
Elias laughed through the speakers.
“Exactly.”
Gabriel looked toward the ceiling.
“What happens if she doesn't?”
Elias answered:
“Everyone dies.”
Silence.
Chloe looked at him.
“You're bluffing.”
“No.”
“Why would my signature matter?”
“Because the Compact requires an outsider.”
“You said I'm the lock.”
“Yes.”
“And Leo is the heir.”
“Yes.”
“Then what do you need me for?”
Elias answered:
“To open the door.”
Chloe looked toward the seventh door.
Her mother whispered:
“Don't.”
Elias laughed.
“Open it, Chloe.”
The door moved another inch.
“Open it and you'll finally meet your father.”
Chloe's eyes filled with tears.
She wanted to.
More than anything.
After years of believing her father was dead.
After years of believing Leo was dead.
After learning that every memory she had trusted was built on lies—
she wanted one truth.
One.
But Leo grabbed her hand.
He signed:
NOT HIM.
Chloe looked at him.
“Then who?”
Leo pointed toward the door.
Then made a sign.
A sign Chloe recognized.
MONSTER.
Gabriel stepped forward.
“We're not opening it.”
Elias's voice sharpened.
“Then Leo dies.”
Everyone froze.
Chloe turned.
Leo looked confused.
Elias continued.
“You think he's safe because he's standing beside you?”
The lights above them switched on.
A monitor appeared.
It showed another room.
Leo.
A second Leo.
Chloe screamed.
“No.”
On the screen stood a young man who looked exactly like Leo.
Same face.
Same hair.
Same posture.
Same hands.
Same hearing device.
Chloe stared.
“Who is that?”
Leo stared at the screen.
His face went white.
He signed one word.
ME.
Daniel shook his head.
“That's impossible.”
The image moved.
The other Leo looked directly into the camera.
Then raised his hands.
He signed:
SISTER.
Chloe couldn't breathe.
There were two.
Two identical boys.
One beside her.
One on the screen.
Elias laughed.
“Now you understand.”
Gabriel looked at Leo.
“Which one is real?”
Leo stared at the screen.
Then signed:
I DON'T KNOW.
Chloe felt the world collapse.
Elias spoke again.
“The Seven created two versions of the heir.”
Daniel whispered:
“Copies.”
“No,” Elias said.
“Blood.”
He continued.
“Twins.”
Everyone froze.
Chloe looked at her mother.
“You had twins?”
Her mother began crying.
“Yes.”
Chloe stared.
“You never told me.”
“I was seventeen.”
“Two babies?”
“Yes.”
“Where is the other one?”
Her mother looked at Leo.
“I thought he was dead.”
Leo shook his head.
Then pointed toward the screen.
THAT ISN'T HIM.
The figure on the monitor smiled.
Then signed:
YOU'RE THE COPY.
Leo froze.
Chloe looked between them.
One brother beside her.
One brother on the screen.
One real.
One false.
Or perhaps both real.
Elias spoke:
“Only one carries the second sign.”
Chloe looked at Leo's wrist.
Seven circles.
One vertical line.
Then she looked at the monitor.
The other Leo raised his wrist.
He had the same mark.
Gabriel whispered:
“Two.”
Elias laughed.
“Yes.”
Chloe looked at her mother.
“How?”
Her mother shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“You knew about the twins.”
“I knew about two babies.”
“You knew one survived.”
“I thought Leo was the survivor.”
Chloe stared.
“Then who is the other?”
Her mother whispered:
“I don't know.”
Suddenly the screen changed.
The image zoomed closer.
The second boy turned his head.
Someone entered the room behind him.
A man.
Chloe recognized him immediately.
Her childhood father.
Samuel Bennett.
Or the man who had looked like him.
The man smiled into the camera.
Then spoke.
“Hello, Chloe.”
Chloe's blood froze.
The voice was real.
Not a recording.
He was alive.
Samuel looked older.
Gray hair.
Thin face.
A scar across his cheek.
But those eyes.
Those eyes belonged to the man who had tucked Chloe into bed.
“Dad?”
The man smiled.
“I'm sorry.”
Chloe began crying.
“Where are you?”
He looked toward the boy beside him.
“I couldn't come home.”
“Why?”
“Because they were watching.”
“Who?”
“The Seven.”
Chloe pressed her hand against the screen.
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”
He looked away.
“Because I needed them to believe it.”
Gabriel stepped closer.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at him.
“Gabriel.”
His voice softened.
“I knew your father.”
“Which father?”
The man smiled sadly.
“That's the problem.”
The screen went black.
Then a message appeared.
12:00 A.M.
Midnight.
Every light in the underground complex came on.
The Blood Compact opened by itself.
Pages flipped.
Stopped.
And a red seal appeared across the center.
SUCCESSION ACTIVATED.
Chloe screamed.
“No!”
The floor beneath them shook.
Stone doors slammed shut throughout the tunnels.
The old walls began vibrating.
Elias's voice came through one final time.
“Congratulations, Chloe.”
“You've activated the Compact.”
Gabriel looked at her wrist.
The seven-point mark had turned black.
Then a second mark appeared on her palm.
A single word was burned into her skin.
HEIR.
Chloe stared.
“No.”
Her mother whispered:
“It chose you.”
Leo stepped forward.
His hands moved desperately.
NO.
Chloe looked at him.
“What?”
Leo pointed toward the floor.
Then toward the Blood Compact.
Then signed:
IT'S NOT AN INHERITANCE.
“What is it?”
Leo's face was terrified.
He signed:
A DEATH SENTENCE.
The walls suddenly opened.
Armed men poured into the chamber.
Gabriel fired.
Vincent fired.
Daniel pulled Chloe behind the stone table.
Salvatore dragged Beatrice down.
Clara screamed for everyone to move.
Gunfire filled the underground room.
Then the seventh door opened completely.
A figure stepped out.
Not Elias.
Not Samuel.
Not Rafael.
A man none of them recognized.
He wore a black suit.
His face was scarred.
Seven circles were tattooed around his throat.
He looked directly at Chloe.
Then smiled.
“It's done.”
Gabriel raised his gun.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at him.
“The Seventh.”
Silence.
He turned toward Chloe.
“And now that the Compact has chosen its heir…”
His smile widened.
“…we can finally kill the old one.”
Behind him, a second figure stepped into the light.
Chloe stared.
It was the boy from the screen.
The other Leo.
He looked at her.
Raised his hands.
And signed:
I'M YOUR REAL BROTHER.
Leo beside Chloe stared at him.
Then slowly signed three words.
HE'S NOT HUMAN.
Chloe's blood ran cold.
The Seventh smiled.
May you like
And somewhere behind them, Elias whispered:
“Now choose.”
