CHAP 6 — THE SECOND CHILD

Daniel’s adoption file was not entirely destroyed.
Conrad had missed one copy.
Eleanor found it in a place no one expected.
Her late husband’s safe.
Richard had kept a duplicate envelope behind old insurance policies.
Inside was Daniel’s original hospital bracelet.
A birth certificate.
And a handwritten letter.
The birth certificate named no father.
The mother was listed as:
Marianne Cole.
Daniel had never heard the name.
The letter was from Marianne.
Eleanor read it aloud.
“If my son ever asks, tell him I did not abandon him. Tell him I signed nothing willingly. Tell him Conrad Hale promised I would see him again.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Claire took the letter.
The date was four months before Eleanor’s adoption became final.
“Conrad knew your birth mother.”
Daniel stared at the handwriting.
His entire face seemed to empty.
Ortiz searched Marianne Cole.
She found a woman of that name who had worked as a legal secretary.
At Conrad’s firm.
She disappeared from employment records shortly after Daniel’s birth.
Ten years later she died in Arizona.
Single-car accident.
No immediate family listed.
Daniel whispered, “Why would Conrad take her baby?”
Claire did not answer.
Eleanor did.
“Because he needed me to stop searching for Rose.”
Daniel looked at her.
Eleanor began crying.
“After Rose disappeared, I stopped sleeping. I stopped eating. I hired investigators all over the country. Conrad kept telling me I was destroying myself.”
Daniel understood.
“And then I arrived.”
“You gave me a reason to live.”
Claire saw the cruelty of the plan.
Replace the missing daughter with another child.
Not because Daniel was disposable.
Because he was useful.
A grieving mother with a new baby might eventually stop looking backward.
Conrad had manipulated grief itself.
Detective Ortiz asked for DNA samples.
Daniel agreed.
Forty-eight hours later, the preliminary result came back.
Marianne Cole was indeed Daniel’s biological mother.
But the laboratory discovered something else.
A paternal match.
Not through the family database.
Through a coffee cup Detective Ortiz had collected after questioning Conrad.
Daniel read the report in silence.
Claire watched his hand shake.
Conrad Hale was his biological father.
Daniel placed the paper down.
No one spoke.
Finally he laughed once.
A hard, broken sound.
“So the man who arranged my adoption…”
Eleanor whispered, “Was your father.”
Daniel looked toward the window.
Every childhood memory changed.
Conrad teaching him chess.
Conrad attending his graduation.
Conrad congratulating him when he became CEO.
Conrad telling him Eleanor was too emotional to make business decisions.
Conrad warning him against Claire.
His father had been standing beside him his entire life.
Never calling himself Father.
Always shaping him.
“Why give me away?” Daniel asked.
Ortiz answered carefully.
“He may not have wanted the affair exposed.”
Claire had another theory.
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“He didn’t give you away.”
“What?”
“He placed you.”
Silence.
“You were inserted into Eleanor’s family.”
Daniel stared at her.
Claire continued.
“Rose disappears. Eleanor is devastated. Conrad needs someone to redirect her grief. He also needs someone inside the family he can influence for the next generation.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“He put his own son inside the Whitmore house.”
“And spent the next twenty-eight years guiding you toward control.”
Eleanor sank into a chair.
The conspiracy was no longer about one stolen child.
It was about two.
One removed.
One inserted.
Both used to manipulate a fortune.
That night Daniel received a text.
From Conrad.
YOU DESERVE THE WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR MOTHER. COME ALONE.
Below it was an address.
Daniel showed Claire.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I have to.”
“Not alone.”
“He specifically said alone.”
“Conrad has lied to you since before you could walk.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“This is about Marianne.”
Claire stepped closer.
“That is exactly why he knows you’ll go.”
Daniel understood.
It was bait.
But sometimes bait worked because the thing being offered mattered more than the trap.
Daniel forwarded the message to Ortiz.
Then he went.
Not alone.
Claire followed in another car.
And twenty minutes later, she watched Daniel enter an abandoned house on Hawthorne Street.
A house Claire recognized.
Not from adulthood.
