CHAP 13 — SEVENTY-TWO HOURS

Thomas Caldwell disappeared before police reached his home.
Vivian broke down.
She claimed she had not known her husband remained involved.
Claire believed part of that.
Not all of it.
Thomas and Richard had built Caldwell Development together before Richard entered the Whitmore empire.
Both men owed Conrad money.
Both benefited from the trust manipulation.
Thomas had maintained shell companies after Richard’s death.
Conrad designed the crime.
Thomas kept it alive.
The federal government prepared charges.
But prosecutors needed evidence tying Conrad directly to the original abduction.
Thomas could provide it.
If they found him.
Then came the deadline.
A federal judge scheduled an emergency hearing on control of the Whitmore trust.
Seventy-two hours.
Conrad argued that Claire’s reappearance created legal uncertainty requiring an outside receiver.
His proposed receiver?
A financial institution secretly connected to Meridian.
Even cornered, he was still trying to steal the company.
Claire understood something.
Conrad did not panic.
He converted crises into transactions.
So she did the same.
She offered Thomas something.
Immunity was not hers to give.
But visibility was.
Claire released a statement:
Thomas Caldwell possesses information that can prevent an innocent person from carrying the full blame for crimes committed by several people.
Daniel understood.
“You’re telling him Conrad will sacrifice him.”
“He already knows.”
“You want him frightened.”
“I want him realistic.”
Six hours later, Thomas called.
Not Claire.
Eleanor.
“Tell Rose I’m sorry.”
Eleanor activated the recorder Ortiz had installed.
“Where are you?”
Thomas cried.
“He’ll kill me.”
“Conrad?”
Silence.
“Thomas?”
“I have the original tape.”
Claire looked at Ortiz.
“What tape?”
Thomas whispered:
“The North Gate.”
The Whitmore estate had security cameras in 1997.
Primitive analog systems.
Everyone believed recordings from the night Rose disappeared had been erased.
Thomas had kept one.
Why?
Insurance.
Every conspirator had kept insurance against the others.
“Where is it?”
Thomas gave an address.
A railway storage locker.
Police found a VHS cassette.
The footage was damaged.
But recoverable.
At 9:18 p.m., the North Gate opened.
A black Lincoln stopped.
Richard carried four-year-old Rose toward the vehicle.
Claire watched her child-self sleeping against the man she once called Daddy.
Richard placed her inside.
Then another man entered the driver’s seat.
The camera angle obscured his face.
But he raised one hand.
A distinctive ring flashed.
Daniel stared.
He knew that ring.
Conrad had worn it for decades.
The Whitmore family crest.
A gift from Eleanor’s father.
Arthur had trusted him.
Conrad used the ring while stealing Arthur’s granddaughter.
Claire looked at Eleanor.
Eleanor collapsed.
Ortiz stopped the video.
“We have him.”
But Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“He’ll say the driver can’t be identified.”
Claire knew Daniel was right.
Conrad would attack the quality.
The chain of custody.
Thomas’s credibility.
Everything.
Then Ortiz’s phone rang.
Thomas Caldwell had been found.
Alive.
Barely.
His car had gone off an embankment.
Before losing consciousness, Thomas told the paramedic five words:
Conrad knows Daniel is coming.
May you like
Claire turned.
Daniel was gone.
