CHAP 17 — THE COUNTERATTACK
The lake meant Whitmore Lake.
The original family estate included an abandoned boathouse.
Police surrounded it.
Conrad was not there.
But his escape plan was.
Cash.
False identification.
A satellite phone.
Keys to a small private airfield hangar.
He intended to leave by plane.
Daniel wanted to go with police.
Claire stopped him.
“You’re not chasing him.”
“He’s my father.”
“That is exactly why.”
Daniel looked furious.
“He destroyed Marianne.”
“And he wants you emotional.”
“He destroyed you.”
“And I want him convicted, not satisfied.”
Daniel calmed.
Claire had changed.
The woman Eleanor once dismissed as powerless was now the person keeping everyone focused.
Ortiz created a trap.
A message was sent through a channel Conrad believed secure.
THOMAS DIED. TAPE DESTROYED. DANIEL READY TO NEGOTIATE.
Conrad responded.
BRING HIM TO AIRFIELD 6.
Daniel wore a recording device.
The airfield was surrounded discreetly.
Claire remained in an operations vehicle with Ortiz.
Conrad arrived at 2:11 a.m.
He smiled when Daniel entered the hangar.
“I knew blood would eventually matter.”
Daniel thought of Marianne.
Then Eleanor.
Then Claire.
“No.”
Conrad frowned.
“Blood mattered to you.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You stole one child because of her bloodline.”
Silence.
“You planted another because of his.”
Conrad understood.
“You’re recording me.”
Daniel said nothing.
Conrad laughed.
“You always were too sentimental.”
He walked toward the aircraft.
Police moved.
Then Conrad stopped.
“Ask Claire why Marianne ruined everything twice.”
Daniel froze.
Conrad smiled.
“You haven’t figured it out.”
Officers entered.
Conrad raised his hands.
But before they reached him, he said:
“Marianne didn’t only save Rose.”
Daniel stared.
“She saved Eleanor.”
Conrad was arrested.
Hours later, investigators searched the boathouse.
Under loose floorboards they found medical records.
Richard Whitmore had planned something beyond kidnapping.
Two months before Rose disappeared, he had obtained powerful sedatives.
After Rose vanished, he planned to have Eleanor declared psychologically incompetent.
If Eleanor collapsed completely, Conrad would become acting trustee.
Marianne discovered that too.
She anonymously warned Eleanor’s physician.
The doctor changed Eleanor’s medication and refused to sign incapacity papers.
Marianne had saved Claire.
Then saved Eleanor.
Twice.
Daniel sat alone with that knowledge.
His biological mother had protected people who never knew her name.
Conrad had spent decades reducing Marianne to “a secretary.”
But Marianne had been the person who broke his perfect plan.
The prosecutors charged Conrad with conspiracy, kidnapping-related offenses still viable under applicable case theory, fraud, obstruction, evidence tampering, financial crimes, and attempted witness interference.
Thomas survived.
Vivian testified.
Agnes testified.
Daniel testified.
Eleanor testified.
Then Claire took the stand.
Conrad watched her.
For the first time, he could not control the room.
The prosecutor placed the jade pendant before the jury.
Claire touched it.
Then Conrad’s attorney asked:
“Miss Bennett, isn’t it true this entire case has made you extraordinarily wealthy?”
Claire smiled.
“I was extraordinarily wealthy before I knew it.”
Laughter moved through the courtroom.
The lawyer tried again.
“You benefit from Conrad Hale’s conviction.”
“No.”
“You gain control of the trust.”
“That happens because of DNA and trust law, regardless of his conviction.”
The lawyer paused.
Claire leaned toward the microphone.

Conrad stopped smiling.
