CHAPTER 4 — THE FAMILY HE ALMOST LOST

Nearly a year passed.

The mansion no longer felt cold.

The rooms once filled with silence now echoed with bedtime stories, laughter, and the sound of little footsteps racing through the halls.

Adrian kept every promise he had made.

Every school play.

Every birthday.

Every bedtime.

He never missed another one.

Lena remained by the little boy's side.

Not because it was her job.

Because she had become family long before anyone realized it.

One afternoon they visited the child's mother's grave.

The little boy carefully placed a bouquet of white lilies beside the headstone.

He smiled softly.

"Daddy keeps choosing me."

Adrian could no longer hold back his tears.

He looked toward Lena.

Without saying a word, she smiled.

Not every family begins the way people expect.

Sometimes it is built from heartbreak.

Sometimes it is held together by the people who stay when everyone else walks away.

As they left the cemetery, the little boy reached for both of their hands.

One belonged to his father.

The other belonged to the woman who had protected him when no one else did.

For the first time since losing his mother...

He no longer felt alone.

The wedding had ended in heartbreak.

But a father's love, once awakened, became the beginning of the family his son had deserved all along.

Because in the end, children never remember the people who promised to love them.

They remember the ones who proved it.
