CHAPTER 1 — THE WEDDING THAT WAS NEVER MEANT TO HAPPEN

The mansion glowed beneath thousands of golden lights.

Luxury cars lined the circular driveway.

A string quartet played softly as elegantly dressed guests drifted through the marble ballroom, champagne glasses in hand.

Everyone admired the bride.

Everyone congratulated the groom.

Everyone believed they were witnessing the beginning of a perfect family.

No one noticed the little boy.

Seven-year-old Ethan stood quietly near the grand staircase, dressed in a tiny black tuxedo that matched his father's.

He wasn't smiling.

He wasn't running around like the other children.

Instead, he watched the bride from across the room.

Every time she looked his way...

He looked down.

Lena noticed.

As the youngest maid working the wedding, she had spent the morning arranging flowers, serving drinks, and helping guests.

But throughout the day, her attention kept returning to one person.

The groom's son.

She had seen frightened children before.

This wasn't simple nervousness.

This was fear.

Earlier that afternoon, while carrying fresh towels upstairs, Lena had walked past one of the guest rooms.

She heard a voice.

Cold.

Sharp.

"If you ruin my wedding..."

"...your father will never forgive you."

Lena stopped walking.

She recognized the bride's voice immediately.

Then came another sound.

A child trying not to cry.

Lena hesitated.

Before she could knock, the bedroom door opened.

The bride stepped into the hallway wearing her flawless white gown.

Her smile appeared instantly.

"Oh..."

"I didn't know anyone was there."

Lena lowered her eyes.

"I'm sorry, ma'am."

The bride walked away without another word.

Only after she disappeared did Lena quietly glance inside the room.

It was empty.

No child.

No explanation.

She convinced herself she had misunderstood.

Until the ceremony began.

The guests filled the ballroom.

Music echoed beneath crystal chandeliers.

Adrian waited at the altar.

Tall.

Confident.

A successful businessman admired by everyone in the room.

Yet every few seconds...

His eyes searched the crowd.

Looking for one person.

His son.

The wedding planner approached.

"Sir, we're ready."

Adrian frowned.

"Where's Ethan?"

The planner smiled nervously.

"The bride said he was feeling tired."

"He wanted to rest upstairs."

Adrian relaxed.

Only slightly.

That didn't sound like Ethan.

His son had spent weeks talking about carrying the wedding rings.

He had practiced every evening.

He would never choose to miss the ceremony.

Still...

The music had already begun.

The guests were waiting.

The bride entered beneath a shower of white rose petals.

Everyone stood.

Everyone applauded.

Everyone watched the beautiful woman walking toward the altar.

No one noticed Lena standing near the back doors.

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Then she heard it.

A faint sound.

Almost impossible to notice beneath the music.

A child's cry.

She froze.

There it was again.

"M...Dad..."

The voice came from upstairs.

Lena quietly slipped away from the ballroom.

She climbed the grand staircase.

The crying became louder.

Room after room stood empty.

Until she reached the final bedroom at the end of the hallway.

The crying stopped.

Then came a desperate whisper.

"Please..."

"Let me out."

Lena grabbed the doorknob.

Locked.

She knocked.

"Ethan?"

A tiny voice answered immediately.

"I'm here."

"Please..."

"I'm scared."

Lena's heart pounded.

"Who locked the door?"

Silence.

Several long seconds passed.

Then the little boy whispered the answer.

"She did."

Before Lena could ask another question...

She heard footsteps behind her.

She turned.

The bride stood at the end of the hallway.

Still wearing her wedding dress.

Still smiling.

But her eyes...

Were anything but kind.

"What are you doing here?" the bride asked softly.

Lena swallowed.

"I heard him crying."

The bride's smile never changed.

"He's emotional."

"He needs to calm down."

"He'll come downstairs later."

Lena looked back at the locked door.

Another tiny sob escaped from inside.

The bride took one slow step closer.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"If you value your job..."

"...you'll forget what you heard."

Lena felt every instinct telling her to walk away.

To stay silent.

To protect herself.

Instead...

She turned and ran.

Down the staircase.

Past the shocked guests.

Straight toward the ballroom.

She didn't care that the ceremony had already begun.

She didn't care that hundreds of wealthy guests were watching.

She only cared about one frightened little boy...

Locked alone in a dark room...

On the day his father was supposed to become a family again.

Moments later...

Adrian saw tears streaming down the young maid's face as she rushed toward him.

Her voice trembled.

"Sir..."

"...she locked your son inside."

The music stopped.

Every head turned.

May you like

And the wedding that everyone believed had just begun...

Was about to fall apart.
