CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH NO ONE WANTED TO SEE

Over the following weeks, Adrian stopped asking questions.
He started listening.
Every conversation with his son revealed another painful memory.
The locked bedroom hadn't been the first time.
She had hidden his toys.
Thrown away photographs of his late mother.
Told him that crying made his father disappointed.
Whenever Adrian left for work, her smile disappeared.
Fear took its place.
Lena had seen it.
More than once she had found the little boy hiding in the laundry room, the garden shed, even beneath the grand staircase.
Each time he whispered the same words.
"Please don't tell her where I am."
Adrian felt sick.
How had he missed it?
He reviewed the mansion's security footage.
There it was.
The cold stares.
The harsh grip on the child's arm.
The locked doors.
Everything his son had tried to tell him.
Everything he had refused to believe.
That night Adrian sat beside his son's bed.
"I failed you."
The little boy reached for his father's hand.
"You came back."
Those three words shattered what remained of Adrian's guilt.
He realized children don't expect perfect parents.
They only hope someone finally chooses them.
The next morning Adrian made a decision.
No business meeting.
No charity gala.
No endless travel.
May you like
His son would never again wonder whether he mattered.
For the first time in months, laughter slowly returned to the mansion.
