CHAPTER 9 — THE SISTER HE NEVER KNEW HE HAD

Leo couldn't move.

He couldn't speak.

For the first time in his life, the man who had stared down assassins, survived ambushes, and walked into rooms filled with armed enemies without blinking looked completely lost.

His eyes remained fixed on Beatrice.

His sister.

The word refused to fit inside his mind.

It felt impossible.

Wrong.

Almost obscene.

Beatrice stood several feet away, trembling beneath the red emergency lights.

“No.”

Her voice was barely audible.

“No, that's not true.”

Leo swallowed.

“Beatrice…”

She shook her head.

“Don't.”

“I didn't know.”

“I know.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But you don't understand.”

She pressed a hand against her chest.

“Twenty-eight years.”

Her voice cracked.

“I spent twenty-eight years thinking I was nobody.”

Leo took one step toward her.

She stepped back.

“I was told my father was dead.”

“I was told my mother abandoned me.”

“I was told I was lucky to have a job.”

“I was told I should be grateful for a room.”

She laughed bitterly.

“And now you're telling me I'm a Rossi?”

Leo's jaw tightened.

“Apparently.”

“Your sister?”

He couldn't answer.

Because the word hurt.

Not because he rejected it.

Because he wanted it to be true.

He had spent his entire life believing he had no one.

His mother had died.

His father had betrayed him.

His wife had lied.

His daughter wasn't biologically his.

And now, in the deepest vault beneath his home, he had discovered that the woman he had barely noticed for years was his own sister.

Beatrice looked at him.

“Say something.”

Leo's voice was quiet.

“I don't know what to say.”

“Then say the truth.”

He stared at her.

“The truth is…”

He struggled.

“…I wish I had known.”

Beatrice's tears fell.

“So do I.”

Behind them, Rose held Lily's hand.

The two children watched silently.

Leo crouched beside them.

“Are you both okay?”

Lily nodded.

Rose looked at him.

“Grandpa said we shouldn't trust you.”

Leo glanced toward the vault door.

“Grandpa says a lot of things.”

Rose frowned.

“Is he really your grandpa?”

“Yes.”

“Is he bad?”

Leo hesitated.

“Yes.”

Rose squeezed Lily's hand.

“He told me you would hurt Beatrice.”

Leo looked at Beatrice.

“No.”

He stood.

“I won't.”

A metallic click sounded behind them.

Everyone turned.

The vault wall opened.

A hidden passage appeared.

At the end stood an old woman.

Leo raised his weapon.

Then froze.

He knew that face.

His mother.

Not from photographs.

Not from dreams.

Alive.

Standing twenty feet away.

Beatrice whispered:

“Mom.”

The woman looked at her.

“Birdie.”

Beatrice began crying.

She took one step.

Then another.

Leo didn't stop her.

Margaret opened her arms.

Beatrice collapsed against her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Beatrice whispered:

“You left me.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You watched me grow up.”

“Yes.”

“You saw me become a maid.”

“Yes.”

“You saw them humiliate me.”

Margaret's face broke.

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you come?”

“Because every time I came close…”

She looked at Leo.

“…someone died.”

Beatrice pulled away.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret looked at Leo.

“Your grandfather wasn't protecting the Rossi family.”

She wiped her tears.

“He was protecting the system.”

“What system?”

“The bloodline system.”

Leo frowned.

“Explain.”

Margaret walked toward the wall.

She touched a photograph.

It showed a newborn boy.

Leo.

Then another.

Beatrice.

Then another.

A third child.

Leo's eyes narrowed.

“Who is that?”

Margaret's voice trembled.

“Your first brother.”

Leo stared.

“I had another brother?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“He was killed.”

“When?”

“Before you were born.”

“By whom?”

“Your grandfather.”

Leo's jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“Because he refused to become the heir.”

Leo stared.

“He wanted out.”

“Yes.”

“And your father?”

“Dante tried to protect him.”

Leo's expression changed.

“And failed.”

“Yes.”

Margaret continued:

“That is why your grandfather became obsessed with control.”

She pointed toward the vault.

“He created records on everyone connected to the Rossi bloodline.”

“For what?”

“Leverage.”

“Control.”

“Fear.”

Leo looked at the photographs.

“All of this…”

“Was built around one belief.”

“What belief?”

“That blood is ownership.”

Beatrice looked at her mother.

“And what am I?”

Margaret answered:

“You are the proof that he was wrong.”

Beatrice frowned.

“Why?”

“Because you survived without him.”

Silence.

Leo looked at his sister.

The woman who had been treated like nothing.

The woman who had saved his daughter.

The woman who had survived every humiliation.

And suddenly he understood why his grandfather feared her.

She represented everything his empire couldn't control.

Choice.

Freedom.

Loyalty without money.

Love without power.

Margaret touched Beatrice's face.

“I was supposed to take you away.”

“Then why didn't you?”

“Because someone betrayed me.”

“Who?”

Margaret looked toward Elena.

Elena stepped forward.

Beatrice stared at her.

“You?”

Elena nodded.

“I told your grandfather where you were.”

Beatrice recoiled.

“Why?”

“Because he had Lily.”

“But Lily wasn't born yet.”

Elena looked at Leo.

“She was.”

Leo's expression hardened.

“You've been lying about Lily's age?”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“Then explain.”

“I wasn't talking about Lily.”

She looked at Rose.

“I was talking about her.”

Everyone turned.

Rose stepped backward.

“Me?”

Elena nodded.

“Rose was born before Lily.”

Beatrice's face went pale.

“How old is she?”

“Six.”

“Then she was born the same year as Lily.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Here.”

Leo's eyes narrowed.

“Under the mansion.”

“Yes.”

Margaret nodded.

“Your grandfather raised her as a secret heir.”

Rose looked frightened.

“Why?”

Margaret knelt beside her.

“Because your blood was different.”

Rose frowned.

“How?”

“You carry the Rossi maternal line.”

“So does Beatrice.”

“Yes.”

“But Beatrice is your daughter.”

Margaret smiled sadly.

“Exactly.”

Rose looked at Beatrice.

“Then why does Grandpa want us?”

“Because you both can open different parts of the vault.”

Leo looked at the wall.

“Two keys.”

Margaret nodded.

“Beatrice is the biological key.”

“Rose is the memory key.”

Leo stared.

“What about Lily?”

Margaret's expression changed.

“She is the control key.”

Leo froze.

“Control what?”

“The network.”

“What network?”

Margaret pointed toward the deepest part of the vault.

“Everything.”

A low mechanical hum began.

The floor vibrated.

Mateo's voice came through Leo's earpiece.

“Boss.”

Leo answered.

“What?”

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“The mansion has been surrounded.”

“By whom?”

“Police.”

Leo frowned.

“How many?”

“Too many.”

“Who called them?”

A pause.

“Victoria.”

Leo's eyes narrowed.

“Where is she?”

“We don't know.”

Another voice came over the radio.

“Leo.”

His grandfather.

Leo's jaw tightened.

“You're running out of places to hide.”

His grandfather laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

“The police aren't here for me.”

Leo looked toward the security cameras.

“Then who?”

“You.”

Silence.

The old man's voice continued.

“They found the evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“The bodies.”

Leo's face hardened.

“What bodies?”

“The ones beneath your mansion.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Leo turned toward her.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“Thirty-two.”

Beatrice covered her mouth.

“Thirty-two?”

Margaret nodded.

“People your grandfather had eliminated.”

Leo stared at the floor.

“And you let them stay here?”

“I had no choice.”

“Stop saying that!”

His voice echoed through the vault.

Margaret flinched.

Leo immediately regretted it.

But the truth was becoming unbearable.

He had spent years believing his home was a fortress.

It was a grave.

His family had built luxury above the dead.

His daughter had been raised over hidden bodies.

His sister had worked inside a mansion that had been designed to erase people.

And now the police were outside.

Waiting to arrest someone.

Perhaps him.

A red light flashed.

Then another.

A warning appeared on the vault monitor.

SECURITY BREACH.

Mateo shouted through the radio.

“Leo!”

“What?”

“Someone is opening the front gates.”

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

The monitor switched.

A convoy entered the mansion grounds.

Black SUVs.

No police markings.

Leo recognized the insignia on the doors.

Moretti.

Elena went pale.

“My family.”

Leo looked at her.

“Your family is here?”

She nodded.

“They're not here to help us.”

“Then why?”

“To take the ledger.”

Margaret shook her head.

“They don't know the ledger isn't here.”

Leo frowned.

“What do they think is here?”

“The inheritance.”

“What inheritance?”

Margaret looked toward Rose.

“The controlling shares.”

Leo stared.

“Shares in what?”

“Everything.”

She pointed toward the vault.

“Your grandfather didn't build an ordinary criminal empire.”

She took a breath.

“He built a legal one.”

Leo's expression changed.

“Legal?”

“Shell companies.”

“Trusts.”

“Banks.”

“Private equity.”

“Construction firms.”

“Shipping companies.”

“Insurance.”

“Technology.”

“Real estate.”

“He owns pieces of all of them.”

Mateo's voice came through the radio.

“Boss, the Morettis are moving inside.”

Leo looked at Elena.

“Can they be stopped?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because half your security team works for them.”

Leo's eyes hardened.

“Then we change the rules.”

He turned toward Beatrice.

“You're staying with Lily and Rose.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I can help.”

“You already did.”

Beatrice shook her head.

“I'm not hiding.”

Leo stared at her.

“I'm not asking you to hide.”

He handed her a weapon.

“I'm asking you to protect them.”

Beatrice looked at the gun.

Then at him.

“Why me?”

“Because Lily trusts you.”

“And Rose?”

“She already does.”

Beatrice looked at the two girls.

They were standing together.

Holding hands.

For the first time, neither looked frightened.

Beatrice nodded.

“Okay.”

Leo turned to Mateo.

“Get everyone out.”

“Where?”

“The lake tunnel.”

Mateo nodded.

“And you?”

Leo looked toward the vault door.

“I'm staying.”

Mateo shook his head.

“No.”

“I have to.”

“Why?”

“Because my grandfather wants me.”

Mateo stared.

“You think he'll surrender?”

“No.”

Leo's eyes became cold.

“He'll make a mistake.”

The vault door opened.

Leo stepped into the corridor.

He heard footsteps.

Many.

He raised his weapon.

“Leo!”

Victoria's voice.

She appeared at the far end of the hall.

Her hands were raised.

Two men stood behind her.

Leo aimed at her.

“Where's Lily's mother?”

Victoria swallowed.

“Safe.”

“Who are those men?”

“Moretti.”

Leo's eyes narrowed.

“You brought them here.”

“I had no choice.”

Leo almost laughed.

“Everyone in this family has the same excuse.”

Victoria looked exhausted.

“I did what I had to do.”

“You locked my daughter in a cellar.”

“I was ordered to.”

“You beat Beatrice.”

“I was ordered to.”

“You helped my grandfather.”

“I was threatened.”

Leo's voice became cold.

“You keep choosing the people who hurt you.”

Victoria's eyes filled.

“I was afraid.”

“So was Beatrice.”

“She fought.”

Leo stepped forward.

“So did you.”

Victoria looked away.

“Not well enough.”

A gunshot came from behind her.

Victoria collapsed.

Leo fired at the shooter.

The man dropped.

Victoria lay bleeding.

Leo rushed toward her.

“Who shot you?”

She coughed.

“Your grandfather.”

“Why?”

“Because I was going to tell you…”

“Tell me what?”

She grabbed his sleeve.

“Your grandfather doesn't want the ledger.”

Leo stared.

“What does he want?”

Victoria whispered:

“Your sister.”

Leo froze.

“Beatrice?”

“No.”

Victoria looked toward the vault.

“Your other sister.”

Leo's blood ran cold.

“I don't have another sister.”

Victoria smiled weakly.

“You do.”

“Who?”

Victoria's eyes closed.

“The woman you've been calling Elena.”

Leo froze.

Behind him, footsteps sounded.

Elena stood in the doorway.

Her face was expressionless.

Victoria whispered:

“She isn't your wife.”

Leo turned.

Elena looked at him.

“Leo…”

“Who are you?”

Elena didn't answer.

“Who are you?”

She finally whispered:

“Your sister.”

Silence.

Leo stared.

The woman he had married.

The mother he believed had given birth to Lily.

The woman he had loved for years.

His sister.

No.

It couldn't be.

Elena stepped forward.

“I was the first child.”

Leo's weapon lowered.

“You…”

She nodded.

“Your grandfather took me when I was three.”

“And you?”

“I was raised by the Morettis.”

Leo couldn't speak.

“I was sent back to the Rossi family to destroy it.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because I found you.”

Leo stared.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was your brother?”

“From the beginning.”

“And you married me?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I didn't know you were my brother until after I fell in love with you.”

Leo's face went white.

“How?”

“Your grandfather erased my records.”

“Then how did you find out?”

Elena looked toward Beatrice.

“Your mother told me.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“I had to.”

Leo shook his head.

“This can't be real.”

Elena whispered:

“It is.”

Then the lights went out.

A voice echoed through the darkness.

“Family reunion.”

Leo raised his weapon.

His grandfather emerged from the shadows.

He smiled.

“Now you finally understand why I couldn't let any of you leave.”

Leo aimed directly at him.

“You're finished.”

His grandfather laughed.

“No.”

He pointed toward Beatrice.

“She's the beginning.”

Then toward Elena.

“She is the key.”

Then toward Lily.

“She is the controller.”

Then Rose.

“And she is the heir.”

He smiled.

“And you…”

He looked at Leo.

“…are the sacrifice.”

The doors slammed shut.

The vault began locking down.

And a countdown appeared on every screen.

09:59

09:58

09:57

Leo looked around.

“What happens at zero?”

His grandfather smiled.

“The entire Rossi empire disappears.”

Beatrice stared.

“How?”

“Every account.”

“Every company.”

“Every record.”

“Every secret.”

“Every body.”

“All gone.”

Leo's face hardened.

“And us?”

The old man smiled.

“Especially you.”

The countdown continued.

09:41

09:40

Leo looked at Beatrice.

Then Lily.

Then Rose.

Then Elena.

For the first time, he wasn't fighting for money.

He wasn't fighting for power.

He wasn't fighting for revenge.

He was fighting for his family.

And he finally understood the one truth his grandfather had never learned.

Blood could create a family.

But love was what made people choose to stay.

Leo raised his weapon.

“Mateo.”

A voice answered through the radio.

“I'm here.”

“Open every gate.”

Mateo hesitated.

“All of them?”

“All.”

“Why?”

Leo stared at his grandfather.

“Because we're not protecting the Rossi empire anymore.”

He looked at Beatrice.

“We're destroying it.”

The countdown reached:

08:59

May you like

And somewhere deep beneath the mansion—

the first vault door exploded.
