CHAPTER 14 — BLACKWATER ISLAND

The submarine descended beneath the mansion.
No one spoke.
The deeper they went, the darker the water became.
Leo stood behind the control cabin, watching the instruments.
Beatrice sat beside Lily and Rose.
Dante was strapped into a medical seat while Mateo monitored the wound in his shoulder.
Elena stood near the communications panel.
Victoria remained silent.
Nobody trusted her completely.
Not anymore.
Then the submarine lights flickered.
A warning appeared.
DEPTH: 312 FEET
Mateo looked at the screen.
“We're below the lake floor.”
Leo turned.
“How is that possible?”
Dante answered.
“Old Rossi tunnels.”
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“How deep do they go?”
Dante looked at the instruments.
“Farther than the maps show.”
A sudden metallic impact shook the submarine.
Lily screamed.
Beatrice pulled her close.
“What was that?”
Mateo checked the sonar.
“Something hit us.”
“An animal?”
“No.”
Another impact.
Harder.
The submarine tilted.
Alarms erupted.
Leo grabbed the console.
“What's happening?”
Mateo stared at the sonar.
“We're being followed.”
“By what?”
He enlarged the display.
A second vessel appeared behind them.
Black.
Fast.
Armed.
Leo's expression hardened.
“Moretti?”
Dante shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Dante stared at the screen.
“The King.”
The second submarine fired.
The impact threw everyone sideways.
Beatrice shielded Lily and Rose with her body.
Leo grabbed the rail.
“Damage?”
Mateo shouted:
“Outer hull breach in compartment three!”
“How long?”
“Maybe five minutes.”
“Can we surface?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Something is blocking the ascent shaft.”
Leo looked at Dante.
“What?”
Dante's expression was grim.
“Blackwater.”
Leo stared.
“You're saying the island is above us?”
“Yes.”
“And we can't surface?”
“Not from here.”
“Then how do we get there?”
Dante pointed toward a narrow tunnel on the map.
“Underwater passage.”
Leo looked at it.
“That tunnel is barely wide enough for this submarine.”
“We don't have a choice.”
The second vessel fired again.
The lights went out.
Complete darkness.
Lily began crying.
“Daddy.”
Leo immediately moved beside her.
“I'm here.”
“I can't see.”
“You don't need to.”
Beatrice held Lily's hand.
“Close your eyes.”
“Why?”
“Because when you open them…”
Beatrice forced a smile.
“…we'll be somewhere safe.”
Rose whispered:
“Are you sure?”
Beatrice looked at her.
“No.”
The honesty surprised the children.
“But I'm going to make sure.”
Leo heard it.
He looked at Beatrice.
And for a moment, something passed between them.
Not fear.
Not hope.
A promise.
The submarine entered the tunnel.
Stone walls scraped against the hull.
Sparks flew.
Everyone held their breath.
The tunnel twisted sharply.
The submarine groaned.
Then—
light appeared ahead.
A circular opening.
Leo stared.
“Is that it?”
Dante nodded.
“Blackwater Island.”
The submarine surfaced inside a hidden cavern.
A steel platform rose from the water.
The doors opened.
Cold air rushed inside.
Leo stepped onto the platform.
He looked around.
The cavern was enormous.
Thousands of barrels.
Weapons.
Vehicles.
Computers.
Shipping containers.
And at the far end—
a massive elevator.
Above it was the Rossi crest.
But someone had scratched a new symbol over it.
A crown.
Mateo stared.
“The King.”
Dante nodded.
“He's been here for decades.”
Beatrice looked at the walls.
Photographs covered them.
Politicians.
Business leaders.
Judges.
Celebrities.
Military officers.
Every powerful person in America.
And beneath each photograph—
a file number.
Beatrice walked closer.
Then froze.
Her own photograph was there.
So was Leo's.
Lily's.
Rose's.
Elena's.
Dante's.
Margaret's.
Victoria's.
Everyone.
Every member of the family.
Every person who had ever touched the Rossi empire.
All catalogued.
All monitored.
All controlled.
Beatrice whispered:
“He knew we'd come.”
Leo nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then this is a trap.”
“Yes.”
“Are we walking into it?”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because the trap is the only place we'll find the person who built it.”
The elevator doors opened.
Inside was a single button.
THRONE ROOM
Leo stared.
Mateo frowned.
“Subtle.”
Dante almost smiled.
“He never was.”
They entered.
The elevator descended.
One floor.
Then another.
Then another.
The numbers continued.
LEVEL -12
LEVEL -13
LEVEL -14
Beatrice watched.
“How deep does this place go?”
Dante answered:
“Twenty.”
The elevator stopped at LEVEL -20.
The doors opened.
A vast hall stretched before them.
Black marble.
White columns.
A long red carpet.
At the end stood a throne.
And sitting in it—
was the man from the monitor.
The King's face was finally visible.
Leo froze.
Dante stopped breathing.
Elena whispered:
“No.”
The man smiled.
“Hello, brother.”
Dante's face turned white.
“You.”
The King stood.
He looked almost exactly like Dante.
Only colder.
Older.
More controlled.
“It's been a long time.”
Dante raised his weapon.
“You should be dead.”
The King laughed.
“You tried very hard.”
“You were in the car.”
“Yes.”
“I watched it explode.”
“You watched a body explode.”
Dante stared.
“The body wasn't mine.”
The King smiled.
“You should have checked.”
Leo stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
The King looked at him.
“Your uncle.”
Leo's jaw tightened.
“My father's brother.”
“Yes.”
“The man who supposedly died before I was born.”
“Yes.”
“The man who became the King.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
The King walked down the steps.
“Because your grandfather was weak.”
Dante laughed bitterly.
“He built everything.”
“I built the fear.”
“You built nothing.”
“I built the part that mattered.”
He pointed toward the walls.
“Information.”
“Secrets.”
“Debt.”
“Blackmail.”
“That's how empires are really built.”
Leo looked around.
“You destroyed families.”
“I reorganized them.”
“You kidnapped children.”
“I selected heirs.”
“You killed people.”
“I removed variables.”
Leo's expression hardened.
“You're a monster.”
The King smiled.
“No.”
He pointed at Leo.
“I'm the logical conclusion of your family.”
Silence.
Then Beatrice stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“You're the conclusion of fear.”
The King smiled.
“And you are the beginning of rebellion.”
He looked at the pendant in her hand.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“You don't understand what it controls.”
“I do.”
“It controls forty-three billion dollars.”
“I know.”
“It controls the legal empire.”
“I know.”
“It controls the Rossi trust.”
“I know.”
“It controls the bloodline.”
Beatrice lifted her chin.
“And none of that controls me.”
The King smiled.
“That's why I need you alive.”
A screen descended behind him.
A photograph appeared.
Beatrice as a child.
Then another.
Beatrice at ten.
Then fifteen.
Then twenty.
Then working at the Rossi estate.
The King watched her reaction.
“You were always the most interesting one.”
Beatrice's eyes narrowed.
“You watched me.”
“Every day.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother hid you better than she realized.”
“You knew where I was.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't you take me?”
“Because I wanted to see what you would become.”
Beatrice's face hardened.
“And?”
“You became inconvenient.”
Leo stepped beside her.
“She became stronger.”
The King looked at him.
“That's what makes her dangerous.”
Then another image appeared.
Sophie.
Beatrice's missing sister.
Beatrice stopped breathing.
“No.”
The photograph showed Sophie at six.
Then twelve.
Then eighteen.
Then twenty-five.
Alive.
Beatrice stepped forward.
“Where is she?”
The King smiled.
“Close.”
“Where?”
“Closer than you think.”
Beatrice's hands trembled.
“You lied.”
“No.”
“You told everyone she was dead.”
“I told them nothing.”
“Where is she?”
The King pointed toward a door.
Beatrice ran.
Leo followed.
They opened it.
Inside was a bedroom.
A desk.
Books.
Photographs.
A woman stood by the window.
She slowly turned.
Beatrice froze.
The woman was older.
Twenty-eight years older.
But the eyes were unmistakable.
“Bee?”
Beatrice couldn't breathe.
“Sophie?”
The woman smiled.
“I'm sorry.”
Beatrice collapsed into her arms.
For a few seconds, neither spoke.
Then Beatrice began sobbing.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“I looked for you.”
“I know.”
“I thought you were dead.”
“I know.”
“Why didn't you come back?”
Sophie looked toward the hallway.
“Because he wouldn't let me.”
Beatrice turned.
The King stood there.
“You kidnapped her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She was leverage.”
“Against whom?”
“Your mother.”
Beatrice stared.
“What did you do to her?”
“Nothing.”
Sophie interrupted.
“He made her believe I was dead.”
Beatrice looked at her.
“For twenty years.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother refused to give him the pendant.”
Beatrice looked at the pendant.
“The inheritance.”
Sophie nodded.
“She hid it.”
“Where?”
Sophie smiled.
“Inside you.”
Beatrice froze.
“What?”
Sophie touched her chest.
“Your mother didn't give you the pendant.”
“She gave you the bloodline.”
“The documents.”
“The memory.”
“And the ability to unlock the trust.”
Beatrice stared.
“That doesn't make sense.”
Sophie shook her head.
“It will.”
A gunshot shattered the room.
The King fell backward.
Everyone froze.
A man stood behind him.
Dante.
He had fired.
The King grabbed his shoulder.
“You.”
Dante's face was emotionless.
“You should have stayed dead.”
The King smiled.
“Maybe.”
He pressed a button.
Steel shutters dropped.
The room split in two.
Leo, Beatrice, Lily, Rose, and Sophie were trapped on one side.
Dante, Mateo, Elena, and Victoria were trapped on the other.
Leo slammed against the barrier.
“Dad!”
Dante looked at him.
“Take care of them.”
Leo shook his head.
“No.”
“Leo.”
“I've already lost you once.”
Dante smiled.
“Then don't lose yourself this time.”
The King stepped behind Dante.
A gun pressed against his head.
“Choose, Leo.”
Leo stared.
“Your father.”
“Your sister.”
“Your daughters.”
“Or the empire.”
Leo looked at the King.
“You're giving me a choice?”
“No.”
The King smiled.
“I'm showing you what family costs.”
Beatrice stepped beside Leo.
“No.”
The King looked at her.
“What?”
“You've misunderstood something.”
“What?”
“You think family is something we trade.”
She looked at Leo.
“It isn't.”
Leo nodded.
“It’s something we protect.”
Beatrice raised the pendant.
“And we're done playing your game.”
The King laughed.
“You can't stop me.”
Beatrice pressed the pendant against the control panel.
The entire facility went dark.
Then every screen turned on.
A single message appeared:
SUCCESSION PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.
The King stopped smiling.
“No.”
Beatrice looked at him.
“What does it mean?”
His face changed.
“It means…”
He stared at her.
“…you've just taken control.”
The facility alarms erupted.
Every door opened.
Every lock released.
Every hidden file began transmitting.
The King's empire was collapsing from the inside.
Mateo freed himself.
Elena grabbed Victoria.
Dante attacked the guards.
Leo reached Lily.
Beatrice grabbed Rose.
Sophie ran beside them.
“Where do we go?”
Dante shouted:
“Emergency tunnel!”
They ran.
Behind them, Blackwater Island began to shake.
Explosions tore through the facility.
The King screamed:
“You don't know what you've done!”
Beatrice turned.
“Yes.”
She looked at the burning command center.
“We ended it.”
The King disappeared into the smoke.
But Leo knew.
Men like him never died easily.
They escaped through the tunnel.
The submarine waited.
Everyone climbed aboard.
Dante was the last to enter.
He looked back.
The island was burning.
He whispered:
“Goodbye.”
Leo heard him.
“Is he dead?”
Dante shook his head.
“No.”
“Then where is he?”
Dante looked toward the darkness.
“Somewhere he can rebuild.”
Leo stared.
“Then we'll find him.”
Dante smiled.
“No.”
He placed a hand on Leo's shoulder.
“This time, we don't chase him.”
Leo frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the world already knows who he is.”
The submarine began moving.
Above them, Blackwater Island disappeared beneath the lake.
But one monitor remained active.
A single camera feed.
The King's throne room.
Empty.
Except for a phone.
It began ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then someone answered.
A man's voice whispered:
“Phase Two.”
A woman replied:
“Confirmed.”
The man smiled.
“Then let the Rossi family celebrate.”
“Why?”
“Because they still don't know who controls the government.”
The screen went black.
Hours later, the Rossi mansion stood in ruins.
Police surrounded the property.
News helicopters circled overhead.
The Rossi files had gone public.
The empire was exposed.
But Beatrice stood on the front steps with Lily and Rose beside her.
Leo stood next to them.
For the first time, there were no guards behind them.
No hidden cameras.
No locked doors.
No secrets.
Only morning sunlight.
Lily held Beatrice's hand.
Rose held Leo's.
Dante stood several feet away.
Wounded.
Exhausted.
Alive.
Sophie stood beside Margaret.
Mother and daughter had finally been reunited.
Beatrice looked at Leo.
“What happens now?”
Leo looked at the mansion.
“We rebuild.”
“Another empire?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“A family.”
Beatrice smiled.
“For the first time…”
She looked at the children.
“…I think that's enough.”
But inside the ruined mansion—
a single telephone rang.
No one heard it.
No one answered.
And on the screen beside it appeared one final message:
THE KING IS GONE.
Then another line appeared.
THE QUEEN HAS AWAKENED.
The screen went dark.
May you like
And somewhere far away—
a woman opened her eyes.
