CHAPTER 13 — THE KING IN THE SHADOWS

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The word hung in the tunnel like a death sentence.

The King.

Leo stared at Rose.

“Who is the King?”

Rose's little fingers tightened around Lily's hand.

“I don't know his real name.”

“Then how do you know him?”

“He told us.”

“Who?”

“The children.”

Leo crouched in front of her.

“Rose, I need you to tell me everything you remember.”

She looked at Beatrice.

“Can I?”

Beatrice nodded.

“You're safe.”

Rose swallowed.

“He came after Grandpa left.”

“How often?”

“Every night.”

“What did he do?”

“He asked questions.”

“What questions?”

“Which children were scared.”

Leo's jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“He said frightened children were easier to teach.”

Beatrice felt sick.

“What else?”

Rose looked down.

“He asked us who we loved.”

“Why?”

“Because he said love was a weakness.”

Leo's eyes darkened.

“And did you answer?”

Rose nodded.

“I told him I loved Lily.”

The little girl beside her looked at Rose.

“And he said?”

Rose's eyes filled with tears.

“He said that was why he would use her.”

Leo's blood ran cold.

“He threatened Lily?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before she was moved upstairs.”

Leo looked at Beatrice.

“Moved?”

Rose nodded.

“She wasn't supposed to be Lily.”

Everyone froze.

Leo's voice became barely audible.

“What do you mean?”

Rose pointed toward the tunnel.

“Grandpa wanted me to be the controller.”

“Then why Lily?”

“The King changed the plan.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily was born with something.”

“What?”

Rose shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Beatrice stepped closer.

“Think carefully.”

Rose closed her eyes.

“He said Lily had the right blood.”

Leo's expression changed.

“Whose blood?”

Rose whispered:

“Your mother's.”

Silence.

Leo looked at Margaret.

She was crying.

“Margaret?”

She couldn't answer.

“Tell me.”

Margaret wiped her face.

“Lily's mother was not who you thought she was.”

Leo stared.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret looked toward the unconscious Dante.

“Your wife was carrying more than your child.”

Leo's face hardened.

“What?”

“She carried a secret.”

“What secret?”

“A bloodline.”

Leo looked at Lily.

“She's mine.”

“Yes.”

“Then what are you saying?”

Margaret took a breath.

“Lily is the last direct descendant of the original Rossi line.”

Leo frowned.

“I am.”

“No.”

Margaret shook her head.

“Your grandfather changed the records.”

“Why?”

“Because the original inheritance belonged to the women.”

Beatrice looked at her.

“The women?”

“Yes.”

Margaret pointed toward the pendant.

“That is why your grandmother wanted it.”

“That is why my grandfather feared Beatrice.”

“That is why the Morettis wanted Elena.”

“And that is why they needed Lily.”

Leo understood.

“This was never about me.”

“No.”

Margaret's voice broke.

“It was always about the women.”

Dante suddenly opened his eyes.

“Leo.”

Leo turned immediately.

“Dad.”

Dante struggled to breathe.

“Don't listen to her.”

Margaret looked at him.

“You're still lying.”

Dante shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Leo.

“Your mother was the heir.”

Leo froze.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“She controlled the Rossi trust?”

“Before your grandfather stole it.”

“How?”

“Forgery.”

Margaret nodded.

“He changed the succession documents.”

Leo's jaw tightened.

“And my mother?”

“She discovered the truth.”

“What happened?”

Dante closed his eyes.

“She tried to expose him.”

“And?”

“He killed her.”

Silence.

Leo's breathing became heavier.

“I was told she died of illness.”

“You were six.”

“You lied to me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You all say that.”

Leo stepped away.

“Everyone lies and calls it protection.”

Dante looked at him.

“I know.”

A distant siren sounded above.

Mateo checked his radio.

“Police are inside the estate.”

Leo looked at him.

“Are they ours?”

“No.”

“Then whose?”

“Federal.”

Leo's expression changed.

“Federal?”

Mateo nodded.

“They received the files.”

Beatrice looked at the monitor.

“The files went public.”

“Yes.”

“So why are they here?”

Mateo hesitated.

“Because the files weren't everything.”

Leo frowned.

“What else?”

Mateo handed him a tablet.

A single document filled the screen.

ROSSI BLACK LEDGER — CLASSIFIED

Leo stared.

“Where did this come from?”

“Federal database.”

“Who uploaded it?”

“No one knows.”

Leo read the first line.

Then his face went pale.

AUTHORIZED BY: THE KING

Beatrice stepped beside him.

“What is it?”

Leo handed her the tablet.

She read.

Then froze.

The ledger contained names.

Judges.

Police chiefs.

Senators.

Governors.

Bank executives.

Military contractors.

Corporate leaders.

Media owners.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

And beside each name—

a payment.

A debt.

A favor.

A secret.

A threat.

Beatrice looked up.

“This is blackmail.”

Mateo nodded.

“Not just blackmail.”

“What?”

“Control.”

Leo scrolled.

There were thousands of names.

The Rossi empire hadn't controlled criminals.

It had controlled the people who controlled criminals.

Leo whispered:

“This is bigger than the Rossi family.”

“Yes.”

“How much bigger?”

Mateo looked at him.

“Global.”

The mansion shook again.

This time, the explosion came from above.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Mateo shouted:

“Everyone move!”

They ran deeper into the tunnel.

A door opened at the end.

Behind it was a massive underground command center.

Hundreds of monitors.

Satellite feeds.

Financial systems.

Government databases.

Security cameras.

The entire world seemed to be displayed across the walls.

Beatrice stared.

“What is this?”

Dante looked at the room.

“The King's throne.”

Leo walked forward.

“This is how he watched everything.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Twenty years.”

Leo looked at the screens.

One camera showed a hospital.

Another showed a courtroom.

Another showed a private meeting in Washington.

Another showed a children's shelter.

Another showed—

Beatrice stopped.

“Wait.”

She pointed.

A camera feed displayed a small apartment.

A woman sat at a desk.

Her face was hidden.

But Beatrice recognized the room.

Her old apartment.

The place where she had lived before coming to the Rossi estate.

The camera showed her sleeping.

Eating.

Working.

Crying.

Beatrice stepped backward.

“He watched me.”

Leo stared at the footage.

“How long?”

Mateo checked the timestamp.

“Eight years.”

Beatrice's hands trembled.

“Why?”

Dante answered.

“Because you were the missing heir.”

She looked at him.

“I didn't know.”

“They did.”

Beatrice stared at the screen.

She remembered all the times she had felt watched.

The strange car outside her apartment.

The footsteps behind her.

The anonymous gifts.

The phone calls with silence on the other end.

She had thought she was paranoid.

She hadn't been.

She had been monitored.

Studied.

Prepared.

Leo stepped beside her.

“I'm sorry.”

Beatrice looked at him.

“You didn't do this.”

“But I benefited from it.”

She shook her head.

“You didn't know.”

“I should have.”

“No.”

She looked at the screens.

“We all should have.”

A hidden door opened.

Everyone turned.

Victoria appeared.

She was pale.

Her hands were empty.

“I found something.”

Leo stared at her.

“What?”

She held out a photograph.

Beatrice took it.

Her breath caught.

The photograph showed three women.

Margaret.

Leo's mother.

And another woman.

A young woman standing behind them.

Beatrice stared.

“Who is she?”

Victoria whispered:

“The first Queen.”

Leo frowned.

“The first what?”

“The woman who built the original network.”

“Who?”

Victoria looked toward the command center.

“She was not a Rossi.”

“Then who?”

“A woman named Isabella Moretti.”

Elena stepped forward.

“My ancestor.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

Elena stared at the photograph.

“My family?”

“Started it.”

“And the Rossis?”

“Joined later.”

Leo looked at his father.

“So the Morettis built the network.”

Dante nodded.

“And the Rossis took control.”

“Why?”

“Because Isabella disappeared.”

“Where?”

“No one knows.”

Victoria whispered:

“That's where you're wrong.”

Everyone turned.

Victoria pointed at the largest monitor.

“She's alive.”

A live video appeared.

An elderly woman sat in a room surrounded by books.

White hair.

Black dress.

Diamond necklace.

Her eyes were sharp.

Cold.

Unmistakably powerful.

Elena whispered:

“Isabella.”

The woman looked directly into the camera.

Then smiled.

“Hello, children.”

Leo stared.

“How?”

The woman laughed.

“You really believed I would die before seeing the empire returned to its rightful owners?”

Elena stepped forward.

“Why?”

Isabella looked at her.

“Because you are the heir.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“You are.”

“I don't want it.”

“That is irrelevant.”

Beatrice stepped toward the screen.

“What do you want from us?”

Isabella's eyes moved toward her.

“Nothing.”

Beatrice frowned.

“Then why are you doing this?”

“Because I want what your grandmother stole.”

“What?”

“The original trust.”

Leo looked at the documents.

“It's already mine.”

“No.”

Isabella smiled.

“It belongs to Beatrice.”

Beatrice froze.

“What?”

“You are the final bloodline.”

“And Lily?”

“The guardian.”

“Rose?”

“The heir.”

“Elena?”

“The bridge.”

Leo frowned.

“And me?”

Isabella looked at him.

“You are the mistake.”

Silence.

Leo didn't react.

“What mistake?”

“Your father was supposed to die.”

Dante stared at the screen.

“You.”

“Yes.”

“You ordered the bombing?”

“Yes.”

“You killed Lily's mother?”

“No.”

Isabella smiled.

“She was collateral.”

Leo's eyes hardened.

“Why?”

“Because she discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That the King was not a man.”

Beatrice frowned.

“What?”

Isabella's smile widened.

“The King is a title.”

Leo stared.

“Then who holds it now?”

Isabella looked directly at the camera.

“I do.”

A gunshot echoed.

The monitor shattered.

Everyone ducked.

Mateo shouted:

“Sniper!”

Leo grabbed Beatrice.

“Down!”

Another shot struck the wall.

The command center erupted into chaos.

Dante tried to stand.

Leo pushed him down.

“Stay there.”

“Leo!”

“I'm not losing you.”

Mateo moved toward the corridor.

“Sniper's outside.”

“Can you get him?”

“Not from here.”

“Then find another way.”

Mateo disappeared.

Beatrice pulled Rose and Lily behind a console.

“Stay low.”

Lily whispered:

“Bee.”

“Yes?”

“The woman.”

“What woman?”

“The Queen.”

“What about her?”

“She isn't alone.”

Beatrice looked at the monitor.

The shattered screen flickered.

A second image appeared.

A man.

Standing behind Isabella.

His face was hidden.

Rose began shaking.

Beatrice crouched beside her.

“What is it?”

Rose whispered:

“That's him.”

“Who?”

“The King.”

Beatrice looked at the screen.

The man slowly stepped forward.

His face remained in shadow.

Then he raised his hand.

A ring caught the light.

The Rossi crest.

Beatrice stared.

Leo saw it too.

“That's impossible.”

Dante looked at the screen.

His face went white.

“No.”

Leo turned.

“Who?”

Dante whispered:

“My brother.”

Leo froze.

“You had another brother?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

“He died twenty-nine years ago.”

The shadowed man stepped into the light.

He looked almost exactly like Dante.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same scar.

Leo whispered:

“That's him.”

Dante shook his head.

“He's dead.”

The man smiled.

Then spoke.

“Not anymore.”

The screen went black.

The command center doors locked.

One by one, the monitors shut down.

Then a final message appeared.

THE KINGDOM HAS RETURNED.

Beatrice looked at Leo.

“What now?”

Leo stared at the message.

“We find him.”

“And then?”

His expression hardened.

“We end this.”

Dante grabbed his arm.

“No.”

Leo turned.

“You know where he is.”

Dante shook his head.

“I know where he was.”

“Where?”

“Blackwater Island.”

Mateo returned.

“Boss.”

Leo looked at him.

“What?”

Mateo held up a map.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“The island doesn't exist on any modern map.”

Leo stared.

“Then where is it?”

Mateo pointed toward Lake Michigan.

“Right here.”

Beatrice's face changed.

“That isn't an island.”

Mateo nodded.

“It is.”

“Then why doesn't anyone know about it?”

“Because every satellite image has been altered.”

Leo looked at his father.

“Can we get there?”

Dante nodded.

“Yes.”

“How?”

Dante looked toward the underground tunnel.

“There is an old Rossi submarine beneath the mansion.”

Leo stared.

“You're joking.”

“No.”

Mateo almost smiled.

“Of course there is.”

Beatrice looked at Leo.

“You're really going?”

“Yes.”

“To an island controlled by the people who built this entire empire?”

“Yes.”

“Without knowing how many men are there?”

“Yes.”

“Without knowing whether your father can survive the trip?”

Leo looked at Dante.

Then Lily.

Then Rose.

Then Beatrice.

“We don't have a choice.”

Beatrice shook her head.

“We always have a choice.”

Leo looked at her.

“Then what's yours?”

Beatrice picked up the brass pendant.

“My choice is to finish what they started.”

Leo nodded.

“Then we're going together.”

Behind them, the emergency lights turned red.

A hidden elevator opened.

Inside waited a black submarine.

Dante stared into the darkness.

“The last time I went to Blackwater Island…”

Leo looked at him.

“What happened?”

Dante's face hardened.

“I killed my brother.”

Everyone froze.

Leo whispered:

“You said he was dead.”

“I thought he was.”

“Then who is that man?”

Dante looked at the darkness.

“I don't know.”

The elevator doors began closing.

And from somewhere inside the submarine—

a child's voice whispered:

“Daddy?”

Leo froze.

It sounded exactly like Lily.

But Lily was standing beside him.

Beatrice slowly turned toward the darkness.

Then another child's voice whispered:

“Bee…”

Beatrice's blood ran cold.

Because that voice belonged to a child she had never met.

A child who had disappeared twenty years ago.

A child whose photograph was in the Rossi files.

A child named—

Sophie Miller.

Beatrice stared into the submarine.

“That was my sister.”

The doors slammed shut.

And the submarine began descending beneath the mansion.

Toward Blackwater Island.

Toward the King.

Toward the truth that had been buried for twenty-eight years.

May you like

And this time—

Beatrice was going to bring every secret back to the surface.
