Chapter 25 — The Truth Rosa Never Knew

Ethan couldn't stop staring at the photograph.

Rosa.

Seven months pregnant.

Standing outside a small clinic in Queens.

She looked exhausted.

One hand rested protectively over her stomach.

A few feet away stood Adrian Sterling.

He wasn't speaking to her.

He wasn't even looking at the camera.

He was simply watching from across the street.

The date printed in the corner was unmistakable.

Three months before Lily was born.

Ethan slowly turned the photograph over.

The words remained painfully simple.

Some children change history before they take their first breath.

He looked at Michael Avery.

"Explain."

Avery lowered his eyes.

"I was hoping you'd never have to see that picture."

"Answer me."

Avery took a long breath.

"Dr. Sterling never met Rosa."

"He made sure of that."

Rosa, Judge Brooks, Claire, Richard, and James joined the interrogation.

Ethan placed the photograph on the table.

Rosa stared at it.

For several seconds...

she said nothing.

Then she whispered,

"I remember that day."

Everyone looked at her.

"It was raining."

"I had just left my prenatal appointment."

"I thought someone was following me."

She closed her eyes, searching her memory.

"There was an older man across the street."

"He smiled."

"Not at me."

"At my stomach."

"I crossed the road."

"When I looked back..."

"He was gone."

Silence settled over the room.

"So it was him."

Rosa whispered.

"I never knew."

Ethan looked at Avery.

"Why was Adrian watching her?"

Avery answered quietly.

"Because he had just discovered something impossible."

"What?"

"He learned Rosa was carrying Ethan Caldwell's child."

James frowned.

"How?"

"No one knew about the pregnancy."

Avery nodded.

"Officially..."

"No."

"But Project Athena still had access to hospital research partnerships."

Judge Brooks stiffened.

"You mean medical records?"

Avery lowered his head.

"They crossed lines they never should have crossed."

Rosa felt physically ill.

"My pregnancy..."

"...was monitored?"

Avery nodded once.

"Only briefly."

"Adrian ordered all observation to stop."

Everyone stared at him.

"He what?"

Avery reached for his notebook.

James handed it to him under careful supervision.

He opened to an old page.

Dated four years earlier.

Adrian's handwriting filled the margins.

Terminate surveillance immediately.

The unborn child is not to become a subject.

Destroy all prenatal files.

No contact with the mother.

No intervention.

No exceptions.

Ethan read the page twice.

"He tried to protect Lily."

Avery nodded.

"From Athena."

Richard looked confused.

"If Adrian wanted Lily left alone..."

"Why classify her as Legacy?"

Avery sighed.

"He didn't."

He turned another page.

A different handwriting appeared.

Sharp.

Precise.

Cold.

Signed only with two initials.

C.V.

Judge Brooks whispered,

"Cassandra Vale."

The order read:

Director's Override Authorized.

Subject retains Legacy status regardless of Chairman's recommendation.

Observation continues.

James slowly closed the notebook.

"So Adrian lost control."

"Years ago."

At the Caldwell estate...

Lily sat with Professor Benjamin Adler.

She struggled to play Eleanor's unfinished melody.

The first half flowed effortlessly.

Every time she reached the blank measures...

she stopped.

"What's wrong?"

Professor Adler asked gently.

"It feels..."

She searched for the word.

"Lonely."

Benjamin smiled softly.

"Why?"

"Because Grandma stopped talking."

He looked at the empty staff paper.

"No."

"You think so?"

"I think she was waiting."

"For who?"

Lily smiled.

"For somebody to answer."

Professor Adler stared at her.

Children often reached truths adults buried beneath logic.

Meanwhile...

Federal investigators uncovered another hidden Athena facility.

Not in Switzerland.

In northern Vermont.

Officially...

it was registered as a private educational retreat.

Unofficially...

it housed decades of Athena archives.

The building had already been abandoned.

But inside...

agents discovered hundreds of unopened boxes.

One room contained nothing except children's artwork.

Thousands of drawings.

Carefully preserved.

Judge Brooks looked around in disbelief.

"They kept everything."

One drawing immediately caught James's attention.

A crayon picture.

A little girl.

A piano.

A silver owl.

Across the bottom...

written in childish handwriting...

were four heartbreaking words.

Can I go home?

The drawing belonged to...

Candidate Amelia.

The first Legacy child.

Another box contained audio recordings.

Professor Adler volunteered to examine them.

One cassette was labeled:

Amelia — Age 7

He pressed Play.

A tiny voice filled the room.

"Mr. Adrian?"

A gentle man's voice answered.

"Yes, Amelia?"

"When I become important..."

"...can I see my mommy again?"

Silence.

Then Adrian replied softly.

"You should already be with your mother."

The recording ended abruptly.

Professor Adler removed the headphones.

His eyes filled with tears.

"He knew."

"What?"

"He realized the program had become cruel."

Back at the estate...

Lily suddenly ran into Ethan's office carrying Button.

"Daddy!"

"What is it?"

She held up one of her drawings.

"I finished Grandma's song."

Ethan smiled.

"You wrote music?"

"No."

"I drew it."

The page contained colorful lines.

Stars.

Birds.

Flowers.

Completely meaningless...

until Professor Adler looked at it.

He froze.

"What?"

James asked.

Benjamin carefully placed the drawing beside Eleanor's unfinished score.

Every flower.

Every bird.

Every star.

Matched missing note patterns.

Lily hadn't drawn random pictures.

She had unknowingly illustrated the melody.

Professor Adler slowly began writing notes onto the blank staff.

Measure after measure.

The composition completed itself.

Claire covered her mouth.

"My God..."

Benjamin played the completed piece.

The room filled with music unlike anything they had ever heard.

Gentle.

Hopeful.

Tender.

When the final note faded...

Lily quietly whispered,

"That's what Grandma wanted to say."

At that exact moment...

An encrypted emergency message arrived from Switzerland.

Judge Brooks opened it immediately.

Swiss authorities had arrested three senior Athena executives.

During questioning...

one of them revealed a devastating truth.

Cassandra Vale was already in the United States.

Not only that...

She had entered Connecticut two days earlier...

using diplomatic credentials.

James immediately checked every surveillance camera surrounding the Caldwell estate.

Nothing.

No sign of her.

Then the newest facial-recognition system finished scanning archived footage from the past week.

One image flashed onto the screen.

A woman wearing a volunteer badge.

Standing only ten feet away from Lily...

during the children's hospital concert.

She wasn't watching the performance.

She was watching Lily.

And unlike Adrian Sterling...

May you like

there was no sadness in her eyes.

Only calculation.
