Chapter 17 — Eleanor's Choice

Ethan didn't speak.
He simply stared at the signature.
Approved by: Eleanor Caldwell.
His mother's elegant handwriting was unmistakable.
The woman who had taught him compassion...
The woman who believed music could heal broken hearts...
The woman whose final letter had led him back to Lily...
had signed the first document that became Project Athena.
It made no sense.
It couldn't.
Unless...
there was another truth no one had uncovered.
Richard looked at the page.
For a long moment, he closed his eyes.
Then he quietly said,
"That's only the first page."
James frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Richard reached for the file.
"You didn't read the last amendment."
He turned several yellowed pages until he found a handwritten note attached with an old paperclip.
The note was dated exactly eight months after Project Athena began.
It carried Eleanor's signature again.
This time, however, the words were completely different.
Effective immediately, I withdraw all support from Project Athena.
The original purpose has been abandoned.
Children are becoming data instead of lives.
If this project continues under its current direction, history will remember it as exploitation disguised as charity.
I refuse to be part of it.
— Eleanor Caldwell
Silence.
Claire slowly smiled through tears.
"I knew it."
Richard lowered his head.
"She resigned."
"She tried to stop everything."
"No one listened."
Twenty-five years earlier...
Project Athena had been Eleanor's dream.
Not Richard's.
She had spent years volunteering at children's hospitals.
She had met brilliant children whose families could never afford tutors, medicine, or even transportation.
She believed anonymous scholarships could change lives.
No publicity.
No ownership.
No expectations.
Simply help.
Richard admired the idea.
Then he transformed it.
Investors offered funding.
Board members demanded measurable results.
Economists built prediction models.
Psychologists developed ranking systems.
Anonymous support slowly became institutional surveillance.
The project no longer asked,
"How can we help this child?"
It asked,
"How valuable might this child become?"
That was the moment Eleanor walked away.
Richard didn't.
"I told myself I could fix it from the inside."
Richard whispered.
"I was wrong."
Claire looked at her brother-in-law with quiet sadness.
"No."
"You were afraid."
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
"I was."
Rosa sat silently.
She still couldn't stop thinking about her own file.
Someone had observed her throughout graduate school.
Her research.
Her financial struggles.
Even her personality.
One report described her as:
Highly intelligent. Displays unusual resilience. Strong ethical decision-making. High probability of scientific leadership.
Another line made her stomach tighten.
Emotional attachment risk: Above average.
She looked at Ethan.
"They studied me..."
"...before we ever met."
Ethan took her hand.
"I know."
"For years I thought our meeting was coincidence."
Rosa whispered,
"What if it wasn't?"
The possibility chilled the room.
James immediately began searching the archive.
Thousands of documents.
Hundreds of names.
Most unrelated.
Then...
he found something.
A dinner guest list.
Columbia University Fundraising Gala.
Four years earlier.
The very night Ethan and Rosa met.
One handwritten note appeared beside Ethan's name.
Recommend attendance. Potential participant Candidate 047 expected to work event.
James looked up slowly.
"Ethan..."
"You were supposed to attend that fundraiser."
"Yes."
"But not by accident."
Silence.
Someone...
had intentionally placed Ethan and Rosa in the same room.
"No."
Richard immediately shook his head.
"I never approved that."
James showed him the document.
"It wasn't authorized by you."
"Then who?"
The signature belonged to someone neither of them recognized.
Only initials.
A.S.
Claire frowned.
"Who is A.S.?"
Richard looked genuinely confused.
"There wasn't anyone with those initials on the Athena executive committee."
James checked another document.
Then another.
The same initials appeared repeatedly.
A.S.
Authorization.
Transfers.
Candidate reviews.
Financial approvals.
Whoever A.S. was...
they had operated inside Project Athena for years without attracting attention.
Meanwhile...
Lily sat quietly in the music room.
She wasn't playing.
She was drawing.
Mrs. Harper smiled.
"What are you making today?"
"A maze."
"For who?"
"The grown-ups."
Mrs. Harper laughed.
"Why?"
"They keep getting lost."
That afternoon...
Federal investigators officially arrived at Caldwell Global Headquarters.
Not with handcuffs.
With questions.
Boxes of archived files were loaded into secure vehicles.
Computers were copied.
Former executives requested legal counsel.
Financial news channels broadcast live from outside the building.
Every reporter repeated the same question.
Who really controlled Project Athena?
No one knew.
Victoria watched the chaos from her penthouse.
A slow smile crossed her face.
Her assistant looked nervous.
"Miss Haynes..."
"Should we be concerned?"
Victoria calmly poured herself coffee.
"No."
"The Caldwells are destroying themselves."
Her assistant hesitated.
"What if investigators eventually reach your father's companies?"
Victoria looked out the window.
"They won't."
"Why are you so certain?"
"Because..."
She smiled faintly.
"...they're looking in the wrong direction."
Back at the Caldwell estate...
James continued searching through old digital backups.
Then suddenly...
the computer beeped.
ACCESS DENIED
A hidden partition appeared.
Password protected.
Created twenty-four years earlier.
Owner:
A.S.
James looked toward Ethan.
"I've never seen this server."
Richard frowned.
"I didn't know it existed."
They tried every password they could imagine.
Nothing worked.
Then Lily wandered into the room holding Button.
"What are you doing?"
Ethan smiled.
"Trying to unlock something."
Lily looked at the keyboard.
Then at the screen.
"It wants a song."
Everyone laughed.
James sighed.
"I wish it were that simple."
Lily climbed into Ethan's lap.
She stared at the login box.
Then pointed toward the piano.
"Grandma's song."
Claire suddenly froze.
"What did you say?"
"The computer wants Grandma's song."
No one understood.
Except Claire.
Very slowly...
she walked to the piano.
She played the lullaby Eleanor had always used to end every lesson.
Halfway through...
she stopped.
Her eyes widened.
"Ethan."
"What?"
"Eleanor always called this piece..."
She whispered the title.
"Athena's Promise."
Silence.
James quickly typed the words.
ATHENASPROMISE
Access denied.
Claire shook her head.
"No..."
"Not the title."
"The date."
She closed her eyes.
Remembering.
"Eleanor finished the composition on..."
She whispered the date.
James entered it.
051498
The screen paused.
Then...
the hard drive unlocked.
A hidden folder appeared.
Only one video file.
Recorded eighteen years earlier.
Filename:
IF YOU HAVE FOUND THIS, I'M ALREADY GONE.
Recorded by:
Eleanor Caldwell.
Every person in the room stopped breathing.
Ethan slowly moved the cursor toward the file.
His hand trembled.
For eighteen years...
his mother's final testimony had been waiting.
Hidden where only someone who remembered her music could find it.
He clicked.
The screen faded to black.
Then...
Eleanor Caldwell appeared.
Alive.
Looking directly into the camera.
And the very first words she spoke shattered everything they thought they knew.
May you like
"I did not create the monster called Project Athena."
"I tried to stop the person who did."
