Chapter 20 — The Girl They Could Never Own

James read the report twice.

Then a third time.

The words refused to change.

Candidate Classification: LEGACY

Name: Lily Grace Caldwell

Status: Active Observation

His hands trembled.

This wasn't an old record.

The file had been updated...

forty-eight hours earlier.

Someone wasn't studying history.

Someone was watching Lily.

Now.

James walked into Ethan's office without knocking.

Ethan immediately looked up.

"What happened?"

James silently handed him the report.

Ethan read the first page.

Then the second.

His face hardened.

The final page contained a photograph.

Lily.

Standing on the stage after the children's hospital concert.

Holding the little boy's hand.

It wasn't a public press photograph.

It had been taken from backstage.

From an angle accessible only to authorized personnel.

Someone had been inside the event.

Watching.

Recording.

Reporting.

Rosa entered moments later.

One look at Ethan's face told her everything.

"No..."

she whispered.

"They found her again."

Ethan nodded.

"They never stopped looking."

Judge Helen Brooks arrived within the hour.

Federal cybercrime specialists accompanied her.

One investigator projected the decrypted Athena database onto a large screen.

Rows of names filled the display.

Most files had been archived years ago.

Only one remained active.

LEGACY

The investigator zoomed in.

Additional notes appeared.

Musical aptitude exceeds projections.

Behavioral profile consistent with Subject Eleanor.

Recommend direct acquisition before age six.

The room fell silent.

Rosa couldn't breathe.

"Acquisition?"

Judge Brooks answered quietly.

"They're talking about your daughter."

Ethan slammed his fist onto the table.

"No one acquires my child."

His voice echoed through the room.

The investigators didn't disagree.

Just then...

Professor Benjamin Adler arrived unexpectedly.

"I came as soon as James called."

He examined the report.

His expression slowly changed from confusion...

to recognition.

"I've seen this wording before."

Everyone turned toward him.

"When?"

"Years ago."

He sat down slowly.

"There were rumors among scholarship students."

"What rumors?"

Benjamin took a deep breath.

"Some children disappeared."

Silence.

"We assumed their families moved."

"We were told they had accepted opportunities overseas."

"No one questioned it."

"Why would they?"

He looked at the report again.

"But now..."

"I don't think they left willingly."

Judge Brooks immediately contacted federal authorities.

Within minutes...

the missing Candidate 128 file from the previous day became the center of the investigation.

Agents searched old immigration records.

School enrollments.

Medical databases.

Nothing.

The child had vanished.

As though they had never existed.

Meanwhile...

Lily remained blissfully unaware.

She sat in the music room teaching Grandpa Richard how to play "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star."

"No."

she giggled.

"Your thumb goes here."

Richard obediently moved his hand.

"Like this?"

"Better."

"You learn fast."

James watched quietly from the doorway.

Richard Caldwell...

the man who once measured children by potential...

was now struggling to impress his granddaughter with a nursery rhyme.

Perhaps...

that was justice.

That afternoon...

Federal agents completed a security sweep of the Caldwell estate.

New cameras.

Encrypted communications.

Around-the-clock protection.

Lily noticed the additional security immediately.

"Why are there so many new friends?"

Rosa knelt beside her.

"They're here to keep everyone safe."

Lily thought carefully.

"Are they scared?"

"No."

"Then why do they look scared?"

No one answered.

Across Manhattan...

Inside a glass tower bearing no company logo...

a man stood before a wall of monitors.

Dozens of live security feeds.

Financial data.

Government reports.

Satellite maps.

He watched Lily's concert again.

Paused the video.

Zoomed in on her face.

Then smiled.

"So..."

he whispered.

"Eleanor was right."

A young assistant entered.

"Sir."

"The Caldwell estate has increased security."

The man nodded.

"I expected that."

"What are your orders?"

He looked toward one monitor displaying Lily's piano performance.

"No action."

"Not yet."

"We've waited twenty-five years."

"We can wait a little longer."

The assistant hesitated.

"What about Legacy?"

The man smiled.

"Legacy doesn't belong to them."

"It belongs to history."

His face remained hidden in shadow.

Only one object reflected the light.

A silver owl pendant hanging around his neck.

That evening...

Claire asked Ethan to meet her in Eleanor's old music room.

She carried another journal.

"I found something."

Inside the journal...

Eleanor had written about a little girl she met at the children's hospital years earlier.

Not the child from the photograph.

Another girl.

One page caught Ethan's attention.

There is one child Richard must never allow Athena to evaluate.

Some gifts cannot survive being measured.

Ethan frowned.

"Who was she talking about?"

Claire turned the page.

A name had once been written there.

It had been carefully cut away with scissors.

Someone had deliberately removed it.

James entered quickly.

"We found the original."

"What?"

"The page."

He held up a scanned archive recovered from Eleanor's storage boxes.

The missing name remained intact.

Everyone leaned closer.

The words read:

If I ever have a granddaughter...

Promise me she will never become Candidate Legacy.

The room went completely silent.

Rosa whispered,

"She wrote that..."

"...before Lily was even born."

Claire nodded.

"Eleanor feared this long before any of us understood why."

Judge Brooks suddenly remembered something.

"Eleanor once gave testimony under seal."

Richard looked surprised.

"There was a hearing?"

"Yes."

"But the transcript disappeared."

"When?"

"The day before she died."

James immediately checked the federal archive.

After several minutes...

he looked up.

"It wasn't destroyed."

"It was reclassified."

"By whom?"

James stared at the authorization record.

His expression changed.

"No..."

Judge Brooks stepped closer.

"What is it?"

James slowly turned the monitor.

The reclassification order carried a full signature.

Not initials.

A complete name.

For the first time...

the mysterious A.S. was no longer hiding.

Dr. Adrian Sterling

Former Director of Sterling Behavioral Systems.

Founder of Athena Phase Two.

Alive.

Active.

And according to intelligence records...

currently residing somewhere in Switzerland.

Ethan looked at the screen.

"So now we finally know who he is."

Judge Brooks shook her head.

"No."

"We know his name."

She paused.

"We still don't know what he wants."

As if answering her question...

every phone inside the Caldwell estate rang simultaneously.

James picked up first.

No caller ID.

No background noise.

Only one calm voice.

"Good evening, Mr. Caldwell."

"This is Dr. Adrian Sterling."

Ethan took the phone.

"What do you want?"

A brief silence followed.

Then the man answered with chilling politeness.

"I don't want your company."

"I don't want your fortune."

"I simply want to meet..."

"...the little girl who inherited Eleanor's gift."

The line went dead.

For the first time...

the enemy was no longer hiding in the shadows.

He had introduced himself.

May you like

And the real war...

was about to begin.
