Chapter 10 - THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK TOO LATE

Claire Hale could not move.
She had imagined this moment thousands of times.
In her dreams.
In the quiet hours after Sophie fell asleep.
In the moments when she stared at old photographs and wondered what Michael would look like if he had survived.
She imagined him walking through the front door.
She imagined Sophie running into his arms.
She imagined finally hearing his voice again.
But never like this.
Never inside an abandoned mansion.
Never after discovering years of lies.
Never after learning that the man she buried had chosen to stay away.
Michael Hale stood only a few feet away.
Alive.
Real.
Breathing.
And Claire hated that a part of her still recognized him instantly.
The same eyes.
The same voice.
The same man she loved.
The same man who broke her heart.
“Claire…”
Michael whispered her name.
But she stepped back.
The movement hurt him more than any words could have.
Because he expected anger.
He expected questions.
But he was not prepared for the distance.
“You don’t get to say my name like nothing happened.”
Her voice was quiet.
But every word carried pain.
Michael lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“You don’t know.”
A pause.
“You disappeared.”
The room became silent.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
Michael looked at her.
“I did it to protect you.”
Claire laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
“Everyone says that.”
A pause.
“My father said that.”
“David said that.”
“Alexander probably says that too.”
Her eyes filled.
“But somehow, every person who claims they are protecting me always makes decisions without me.”
Michael swallowed.
Because he knew she was right.
“I wanted to come back.”
“When?”
Claire stepped closer.
“After one year?”
“After five?”
“After Sophie stopped asking about you every night?”
The question broke something inside him.
Michael closed his eyes.
Because that was the part he feared most.
Not losing his company.
Not losing his reputation.
Not losing his wealth.
Losing his daughter.
“I thought about her every day.”
Claire’s voice became colder.
“But she needed more than your thoughts.”
Silence.
“She needed her father.”
Michael had no answer.
Because there was no answer.
Nothing could justify five years of absence.
Behind them, Alexander Cross watched quietly.
Almost enjoying it.
Because emotional pain was another weapon.
And he had spent his entire life learning how to use weapons.
“Beautiful.”
His voice echoed through the room.
“A family reunion.”
Claire turned immediately.
“You.”
Alexander smiled.
“You finally understand.”
Michael stepped forward.
“Stay away from her.”
Alexander laughed.
“Still pretending you are the hero.”
His eyes moved toward Claire.
“Tell her, Michael.”
Michael’s expression changed.
“Tell her what?”
“The truth.”
Alexander walked toward the screen.
“The truth about why you disappeared.”
Claire looked at Michael.
“What is he talking about?”
Michael remained silent.
And that silence hurt.
Again.
“Michael.”
He looked at her.
“I was trying to protect Sophie.”
“From what?”
A long pause.
“From me.”
The answer shocked her.
“What?”
Michael looked at the screen.
“When Sophie was born, I discovered something.”
Alexander smiled.
“There it is.”
Michael ignored him.
“I discovered that someone had altered the original family records.”
Claire frowned.
“What records?”
“The bloodline records.”
A pause.
“The agreement between the three families.”
Claire looked confused.
“But why?”
Michael looked at her.
“Because someone wanted Sophie to appear to be the heir.”
Silence.
“But she is the heir.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
Michael looked devastated.
“She is not the heir.”
The words felt impossible.
Alexander smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Claire turned toward him.
“What did you do?”
Alexander calmly replied:
“I didn’t do anything.”
A pause.
“I simply revealed the truth.”
Michael stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.”
Alexander laughed.
“You still think you can control the story.”
He pointed toward the screen.
“Show her.”
The image changed.
Another document appeared.
A DNA report.
Claire stared.
Her heart began beating faster.
Because the names were different this time.
Sophie Hale.
Michael Hale.
Claire Hale.
And another person.
A fourth name.
Someone whose existence made no sense.
Claire whispered:
“No…”
Michael looked at her.
“Claire.”
She turned.
“What is this?”
He looked broken.
“I was trying to find the answer.”
“Answer to what?”
A pause.
“Who Sophie’s biological father really is.”
The room became silent.
Claire stared at him.
“You’re saying…”
She could barely finish.
“Sophie isn’t your daughter?”
Michael immediately shook his head.
“No.”
His voice became emotional.
“Sophie is our daughter.”
A pause.
“Nothing changes that.”
But Claire looked back at the report.
Because someone had spent years hiding something.
Someone had manipulated the records.
Someone wanted everyone to question Sophie’s identity.
And that person had one goal.
Control.
Alexander stepped closer.
“Do you see now?”
Claire looked at him.
“What?”
“Your entire life has been built around lies.”
“No.”
Claire answered immediately.
Alexander smiled.
“You still believe love is stronger than truth.”
Claire stared.
“Because it is.”
For the first time…
Alexander looked annoyed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Michael noticed.
And understood.
Alexander did not want Claire to believe the truth.
He wanted her to break.
“Alexander.”
Michael’s voice became dangerous.
“This ends now.”
Alexander laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
He pressed a button.
The screen changed again.
A live camera appeared.
A small room.
A chair.
And sitting there…
Was Sophie.
Claire stopped breathing.
“Sophie.”
Her daughter looked frightened.
But alive.
“Mommy?”
Claire rushed toward the screen.
“Sophie!”
The little girl looked around.
“Mommy, I’m scared.”
Claire’s heart broke.
“I’m coming.”
Alexander smiled.
“You always were predictable.”
Michael stepped forward.
“What do you want?”
Alexander looked at him.
“The agreement.”
“No.”
Alexander’s smile disappeared.
“Then you lose her.”
Claire turned.
“No.”
Alexander looked at her.
“You have until midnight.”
A pause.
“Bring me the original agreement.”
Michael stared.
“And if we don’t?”
Alexander looked at the screen.
Sophie began crying.
Then he answered:
“Then the world learns that Claire Hale failed to protect her own daughter.”
The screen went black.
Silence filled the room.
Claire stood frozen.
Then Michael approached her.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked at him.
Not with anger.
With exhaustion.
“I don’t need your apology right now.”
A pause.
“I need my daughter.”
Michael nodded.
“Then we get her back.”
Claire looked at him.
For the first time in five years…
They stood on the same side.
Not as husband and wife.
Not yet.
But as parents.
And somewhere in the darkness…
Alexander Cross watched them prepare.
Because he knew something they did not.
The agreement was not hidden because it was valuable.
It was hidden because it contained a truth that would destroy the one person everyone thought was innocent.

And when Claire finally opened it…
She would discover the final secret about Sophie’s birth:
