Chapter 14 - THE CHOICE THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING

The countdown continued.
11:59:42
The red numbers reflected across the glass walls of the archive room.
Everyone watched it.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood what Alexander Cross was doing.
He was not threatening them with violence.
He was doing something much more dangerous.
He was forcing Claire Hale to make a decision.
A decision between truth…
And the people she loved.
Claire stared at the screen.
“Alexander.”
Her voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
His face appeared through the security system.
A confident smile.
The same expression he had worn for years.
The expression of a man who believed he was always ten steps ahead.
“You finally understand.”
Claire stepped closer.
“You took my daughter.”
Alexander smiled.
“I protected her.”
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“You keep using that word.”
A pause.
“But you have no idea what protection means.”
For the first time, Alexander’s expression changed slightly.
Not fear.
Annoyance.
Because Claire was not reacting the way he expected.
He wanted panic.
He wanted desperation.
He wanted the mother who would do anything without thinking.
But Claire Hale was not only a mother.
She was also the person who had spent years studying people like him.
“You think this is about Sophie.”
Claire continued.
“It isn’t.”
Alexander remained silent.
“It is about control.”
A pause.
“You want me to destroy the agreement because you know you cannot control it.”
Nathaniel looked at her.
Understanding appeared in his eyes.
She had figured it out.
Alexander’s smile returned.
“Very impressive.”
The countdown continued.
11:58:10
“But intelligence does not change the outcome.”
Claire looked at the screen.
“What happens when the timer reaches zero?”
Alexander leaned closer.
“You lose everything.”
Michael stepped forward.
“You’re bluffing.”
Alexander laughed.
“Still protecting people with empty confidence.”
Michael’s expression darkened.
Alexander looked at him.
“You disappeared for five years because you were afraid.”
A pause.
“You hid while Claire raised your daughter.”
Michael looked away.
The words hurt because they were true.
Alexander continued.
“And now you want to pretend you are a hero?”
The room became tense.
Claire looked at Michael.
For years, she had wanted answers.
Now she finally had them.
But there was no time.
Not now.
“Sophie.”
Claire turned.
Her daughter was sitting quietly beside Nathaniel.
Watching everything.
Understanding more than any child should have to understand.
Claire walked toward her.
She knelt down.
“Are you okay?”
Sophie nodded.
But her eyes were scared.
“Mommy…”
“Yes?”
“Is everyone fighting because of me?”
Claire’s heart broke.
“No.”
She touched her daughter’s face.
“Never think that.”
“But they keep saying I’m important.”
Claire shook her head.
“You are important because you are you.”
A pause.
“Not because of money.”
“Not because of a name.”
“Not because of any empire.”
Sophie looked at her.
“Then why do they want me?”
Claire looked back at Alexander’s face on the screen.
“Because some people forget that people are more valuable than power.”
While Claire focused on Sophie, Daniel stood alone near the archive entrance.
Michael noticed.
“You knew.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I knew part of it.”
“You were working with Alexander.”
“Yes.”
Michael’s expression hardened.
“And you expect us to trust you?”
“No.”
Daniel answered immediately.
“I don’t.”
That surprised him.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“I made mistakes.”
A pause.
“Big ones.”
Michael said nothing.
“I thought I could control the situation.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“I thought I was smarter than Alexander.”
Nathaniel looked at him.
“And you weren’t.”
Daniel nodded.
“No.”
A pause.
“He planned everything.”
Claire turned toward them.
“What did he plan?”
Daniel looked at the countdown.
Then answered:
“He never wanted the agreement.”
Everyone looked at him.
“He wanted the protector.”
Claire frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the agreement has a final condition.”
Nathaniel’s expression changed.
“What condition?”
Daniel looked at him.
“You don’t know?”
Nathaniel shook his head.
Daniel swallowed.
“Edward Hale added one final clause.”
He looked at Claire.
“The protector can destroy the entire network.”
Silence.
Michael stared.
“What?”
Daniel nodded.
“But only if they believe the system has become dangerous.”
Claire understood.
Alexander did not want the empire.
He wanted Claire to destroy it.
Because once she did…
Everything would disappear.
The wealth.
The influence.
The evidence.
The truth.
Everything.
And Alexander would be free.
“He wants me to erase everything.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
The countdown continued.
10:00:00
Claire looked at the documents.
The original agreement.
The records.
The evidence of decades of corruption.
Everything that could expose powerful people.
Everything that could also protect innocent people.
It was not a simple choice.
Destroying the network would mean ending the power of people who abused it.
But it would also destroy resources used by hospitals, charities, and thousands of employees.
Alexander had designed the perfect trap.
There was no clean answer.
At the Langford mansion, Victoria watched the broadcast through a hidden connection.
She had followed everything.
For the first time in her life, she understood what power really was.
Not money.
Not influence.
Choices.
She saw Claire standing there.
And she remembered the little girl at the museum.
Sophie.
The child she had humiliated.
The child who was now carrying the weight of a war between families.
Victoria whispered:
“I was wrong.”
For years, she believed strength meant never apologizing.
Now she understood.
Strength was admitting when you were wrong.
She grabbed her coat.
Her assistant looked surprised.
“Where are you going?”
Victoria looked toward the door.
“To help Claire.”
The assistant froze.
“After everything?”
Victoria stopped.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“After everything.”
Inside the archive, the countdown reached:
05:00:00
Alexander appeared again.
“You are running out of time.”
Claire looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“You are.”
Alexander frowned.
“What?”
Claire smiled slightly.
“You made one mistake.”
“And what was that?”
“You thought I needed the agreement to fight you.”
Silence.
Michael looked at her.
Nathaniel understood.
Claire continued.
“I spent five years investigating you.”
A pause.
“I knew you would eventually reveal yourself.”
Alexander’s expression changed.
“What did you do?”
Claire looked toward Daniel.
Then Nathaniel.
Then Michael.
“I created a copy.”
The room froze.
Alexander’s smile disappeared.
“The real agreement was never here.”
Nathaniel looked surprised.
“Claire…”
She nodded.
“The document in the box was a decoy.”
Alexander stared.
“You lied.”
Claire smiled.
“No.”
A pause.
“I prepared.”
The countdown stopped.
For the first time…
Alexander looked uncertain.
Claire walked toward the screen.
“You wanted me to destroy something I could not replace.”
A pause.
“But you forgot something.”
“What?”
Claire’s eyes became cold.
“I never fight without a backup plan.”
Suddenly, every screen changed.
Not Alexander.
A live feed.
A courtroom.
A government investigation room.
Hundreds of documents appeared.
Claire had already sent everything.
The hidden accounts.
The evidence.
The recordings.
The names.
Everything.
Alexander’s face changed.
“You wouldn’t.”
“I already did.”
Silence.
Because Alexander finally understood.
Claire was not trapped.
She had turned his own plan against him.
Then suddenly…
A new message appeared on the screen.
Not from Alexander.
From an unknown sender.
One sentence.
Everyone froze.
Because the message revealed the one thing nobody expected.
“Alexander Cross was never the mastermind.”
Another line appeared.
“He was working for someone who has been controlling the empire from the beginning.”
Claire stared.
Michael stepped closer.
Nathaniel whispered:
“No…”
The final message appeared.
A name.
A name that made every person in the room lose their breath.
Because the person behind everything was someone they all knew.
Someone who had been trusted.
Someone who had been helping them.
Someone who had been waiting for the perfect moment.
The name appeared:
CLAIRE HALE’S FATHER.
The room went silent.
May you like
And Claire realized the war she thought she had finally won…
Had only just begun:
