Chapter 12 - THE BETRAYAL FROM THE ONE SHE TRUSTED

The darkness inside the Whitmore estate felt alive.
Claire Hale stood completely still.
The old agreement was still in her hand.
The truth she had spent years searching for was finally within reach.
But now…
Someone else was standing in the room.
Someone who should not have been there.
Someone who knew the location.
Someone who knew exactly what Claire had discovered.
The footsteps continued.
Slow.
Calm.
Confident.
Then the figure stepped into the weak light coming through the broken windows.
Claire’s heart sank.
“Daniel…”
The name left her lips like a whisper.
Behind her, Michael immediately moved forward.
“What are you doing here?”
Daniel Reed said nothing.
For years, Daniel had been Claire’s most trusted ally.
The person who helped her rebuild after Michael’s disappearance.
The person who protected her secrets.
The person who stood beside her when everyone else abandoned her.
He was the one person Claire never suspected.
And now…
He was standing in the darkness.
With a strange expression on his face.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Something worse.
Acceptance.
Claire stared at him.
“Tell me I’m wrong.”
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
Her expression changed.
“Daniel.”
His voice was quiet.
“I’m sorry.”
The words hurt more than she expected.
Because betrayal from an enemy was predictable.
Betrayal from someone you trusted was different.
It forced you to question everything.
“Sorry for what?”
Daniel looked at the agreement.
“For letting things go this far.”
Michael stepped between them.
“You were working with Alexander.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Yes.”
The answer was immediate.
No denial.
No excuses.
Claire felt something inside her break.
“How long?”
Daniel remained silent.
“How long have you been lying to me?”
“Five years.”
The number hit harder than she expected.
Five years.
The same amount of time she had spent grieving Michael.
The same amount of time she had rebuilt her life.
The same amount of time she thought Daniel had been helping her.
“You were there after Michael died.”
“Yes.”
“You helped me investigate.”
“Yes.”
“You helped me find the people responsible.”
“Yes.”
Claire’s voice became colder.
“And all that time…”
A pause.
“You already knew.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The room became silent.
Michael looked furious.
“Why?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Because I had no choice.”
Michael laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Who forced you?”
Daniel did not answer.
And that frightened her.
Because Daniel was not afraid of Alexander.
He was afraid of something else.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Daniel looked at the agreement.
“Your grandfather knew.”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
“Edward Hale knew that one day someone would try to control the heir.”
Michael stepped forward.
“So?”
Daniel continued.
“He created a second protection plan.”
Claire stared.
“What protection plan?”
Daniel looked at Sophie’s name written in the agreement.
“One person was chosen to protect the heir.”
A pause.
“Not financially.”
“Not legally.”
“Personally.”
Claire’s heart tightened.
“Who?”
Daniel looked at her.
“You.”
Silence.
Claire frowned.
“What?”
“You were not chosen because you married Michael.”
A pause.
“You were chosen before that.”
Michael looked shocked.
“That’s impossible.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Claire.
“Your grandfather knew your character.”
“He knew you would protect the child before the empire.”
Claire felt confused.
“Then why betray me?”
Daniel lowered his head.
“Because I was also chosen.”
The room froze.
“What?”
Daniel looked at Michael.
“Alexander found me years ago.”
Michael’s expression hardened.
“What did he do?”
“He showed me documents.”
Daniel’s voice became heavier.
“He convinced me the Langfords and Hales were destroying each other.”
A pause.
“He told me the only way to stop the war was to control the heir.”
Claire stared.
“So you believed him?”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“At first.”
A pause.
“Then I realized he was wrong.”
Michael stepped forward.
“But you still helped him.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Because by the time I understood the truth…”
His voice cracked.
“It was too late.”
At that exact moment…
Inside an underground room beneath the old Langford estate…
Sophie Hale sat quietly.
She was scared.
But she was trying not to show it.
Because her mother always told her something.
Fear was a feeling.
Not a weakness.
Across from her sat Alexander Cross.
He watched her carefully.
Not like a child.
Like a puzzle.
“You know who I am?”
Sophie shook her head.
“No.”
Alexander smiled.
“I knew your father.”
Sophie looked up.
“My daddy?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
Alexander was silent.
Then answered:
“Closer than you think.”
Sophie frowned.
“Is my mommy coming?”
Alexander looked at her.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“She always comes.”
For some reason, that answer bothered him.
Because he understood something.
Claire Hale was not dangerous because of money.
Not because of influence.
Not because of power.
She was dangerous because she had something Alexander never understood.
A reason to fight.
Back at the Whitmore estate, Claire walked toward Daniel.
She was hurt.
Angry.
But controlled.
“Where is Sophie?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
Claire’s expression hardened.
“Don’t lie to me.”
“I’m not.”
A pause.
“Alexander stopped trusting me.”
Michael frowned.
“Why?”
“Because I started helping Claire.”
Silence.
Claire stared.
“You were helping me?”
Daniel nodded.
“After I discovered what he planned to do to Sophie…”
He looked ashamed.
“I tried to stop him.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because Alexander knew.”
A pause.
“He knew if I contacted you, he would move Sophie.”
Claire understood.
He had been trapped.
But that did not erase the betrayal.
“You still lied.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And I deserve whatever happens next.”
Before Claire could respond…
A sound came from outside.
Cars.
Multiple cars.
Michael looked toward the window.
“We’re not alone.”
Everyone froze.
Headlights appeared through the trees.
Not police.
Not security.
Private vehicles.
A convoy.
Daniel looked outside.
His face changed.
“No.”
Claire noticed.
“Who is it?”
Daniel whispered:
“The people Alexander works for.”
The front door exploded open.
Several armed men entered.
But they were not there for Claire.
They were there for the agreement.
The leader stepped forward.
An older man wearing an expensive coat.
A man Claire recognized.
Because she had seen him in old family photographs.
A man everyone believed disappeared decades ago.
Michael stared.
“Impossible.”
Claire looked confused.
“Who is that?”
Michael’s face turned pale.
Because he knew.
“That’s…”
The man smiled.
“Hello, Michael.”
A pause.
“It has been a long time.”
He looked at Claire.
Then at the agreement.
“And now…”
His eyes moved toward the document.
“We finally get back what belongs to us.”
Claire tightened her grip.
“Who are you?”
The man smiled.
And answered:
“I am the person who created this entire war.”
The room went silent.
Because the greatest enemy was not Alexander.
Not Richard.
Not even the Langfords.
It was someone who had been hiding behind every secret from the beginning.
Someone connected to the original empire.
Someone who knew exactly why Sophie Hale had been born.
And before anyone could react…
The man said the one sentence that changed everything:
“Claire, your daughter was never the heir.”
May you like
A pause.
“She was the bait.”
