CHAP 18 — THE BALLROOM PROMISE

Rocco wanted a trade.
Elena for Mave.
Predictable.
Mave suggested something less predictable.
They let him believe she agreed.
The meeting took place inside an abandoned ferry terminal.
Federal investigators monitored from a distance.
Sofia coordinated digital surveillance.
Gabriel wanted to enter with Mave.
She refused.
Vincent wanted to enter.
She refused him too.
“No.”
“Mave.”
“He wants me.”
“That’s not the persuasive argument you think it is.”
She took Vincent’s arm.
The same motion as the ballroom.
“Remember the first night?”
“Yes.”
“You told me to take your arm.”
“Yes.”
“You thought keeping me close meant keeping me safe.”
His expression softened.
“I was wrong.”
“Partly.”
She squeezed his hand.
“Keeping people close can also mean trusting them to walk somewhere you can’t.”
Vincent hated the sentence.
Because it was true.
Mave entered alone.
Rocco waited beside Elena.
Unlike Carmine, Rocco had no elegance.
Only anger.
“You destroyed a hundred years.”
Mave looked at him.
“No.”
“What?”
“I found thirty thousand dollars.”
He frowned.
Mave smiled.
“That’s what destroyed you.”
Rocco did not understand.
She continued.
“Organizations like yours always think they collapse because someone betrays them.”
She took another step.
“They collapse because you become arrogant enough to believe small discrepancies don’t matter.”
Elena almost smiled.
Rocco demanded Mave sign a transfer restoring assets to his shell companies.
She signed.
He released Elena.
Outside, Sofia received confirmation.
The transfer executed.
Rocco smiled.
“Thank you.”
Mave smiled back.
“You’re welcome.”
His phone began vibrating.
The shell companies he provided had now been legally linked to him.
The transfer had been designed as an evidentiary trap.
Every account was frozen immediately.
Rocco’s expression collapsed.
“You—”
Elena moved aside.
Federal agents entered.
Rocco reached for Mave.
Vincent appeared before he could.
One moment.
One movement.
Rocco stopped.
Vincent stood between them.
Mave stared.
He glanced back.
“Strong recommendation.”
Despite everything, she laughed.
Rocco was arrested.
Outside, Elena hugged her daughter.
Vincent stood several feet away.
Mave looked toward him.
“Come here.”
He approached.
Elena studied him.
“You’re Alessandro’s son.”
“Yes.”
“You look like him.”
“So everyone keeps telling me.”
“That isn’t always a compliment.”
“I’ve learned.”
Elena looked at Mave.
Then back at Vincent.
“You love her?”
Vincent answered immediately.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
A pause.
“She’ll make your life difficult.”
Vincent looked at Mave.
“I’ve also learned that.”
Mave punched his arm.
Elena smiled.
For the first time, the three of them laughed together.

Behind them, the ferry terminal lights reflected across the dark river.
The old war had finally run out of men willing to inherit it.
